IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa coach Fran McCaffery acknowledges that junior forward Eric May hasn’t been himself lately because of back spasms. May, a former starter for the Hawkeyes, hasn’t played more than 10 minutes since early last month because of back trouble. McCaffery says May isn’t doing “great,” adding that the explosiveness that marked his game has been lacking. McCaffery says he appreciates May’s effort over the past month, adding he’s been a terrific competitor. May will likely play sparingly when Iowa faces Illinois Thursday in the first round of the Big Ten tournament. You can hear the game on KJAN beginning at 9:30-a.m., Thursday.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs released veteran linebacker Demorrio Williams on Tuesday, saving the franchise about $2 million in salary cap space before the start of free agency. The 31-year-old Williams joined the Chiefs in 2008 after four seasons with the Atlanta Falcons, and eventually became the starter ahead of Derrick Johnson. But he’s been used primarily on special teams the past few seasons as Johnson emerged as a Pro Bowl middle linebacker. Williams has started 65 of 124 career games, including 22 starts over the past four years in Kansas City. He made 237 tackles (155) solo with the Chiefs. Playing time would have been tight for Williams next season.
Johnson is signed through 2015, and is coming off the best year of his career, setting a franchise record with 179 tackles. He also had two interceptions and two sacks. Jovan Belcher, a restricted free agent, is coming off a breakout season in which he finished second on the team in tackles. Kansas City also has signed Brandon Siler, who missed all of last season after tearing his Achilles in training camp, to a one-year extension. Kansas City has more pressing needs in the April draft, particularly the offensive and defensive lines. But the Chiefs may also target a linebacker in the later rounds who can supply the same kind of depth and special teams ability as Williams at a fraction of the cost.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — It sounds like Drake is preparing to host postseason basketball next week. The Bulldogs sent out an e-mail Tuesday telling season-ticket holders it can pre-order tickets in “anticipation of a possible invitation” to a postseason tournament starting Wednesday. Drake says if it’s awarded a home game for a tournament to be announced later, that matchup would be held during the middle of next week. The Bulldogs finished just 17-15 and have an RPI of 134, so an invitation to the NIT seems doubtful at best. The College Basketball Invitational or CollegeInsider.com tournaments would be next in line for a team with a resume like Drake’s.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Online volunteer registration for the 2013 U.S. Senior Open Championship to be held at Omaha Country Club is now open.
More than 3,000 volunteers are needed to fill positions on more than 30 committees, including marshals, transportation, leaderboards and merchandise. Early submission of the application allows volunteers to specify their committee preference.
People interested in volunteering can visit www.2013ussenioropen.com. A full description of committee responsibilities is provided on the website to assist volunteers in determining their preferences.
All volunteers are required to purchase the volunteer package for $125. It includes two championship golf shirts, one windbreaker, one ball cap or visor, one water bottle and one volunteer credential valid for all seven days of the championship.
Volunteers also receive free food and drink on the days they work.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State heads to the Big 12 tournament filled with hope rather than dread for the first time in years.
The 25th-ranked Cyclones haven’t won a conference tournament game since 2005. But Iowa State has accomplished a lot of things recently that it hasn’t in years, including the program’s first Top 25 ranking since November 2005.
The Cyclones (22-9, 12-6 Big 12) head to Kansas City as the third seed and with much larger goals than simply snapping their six-game losing skid in the league tournament.
Iowa State opens Thursday night against Texas (19-12, 9-9), which it split with during the regular season.
Coach Fred Hoiberg says he likes the way the Cyclones are playing right now, adding that they’ve got a lot of confidence.
Iowans have a chance tonight (Tuesday) to express their opinions about several proposed changes in hunting and trapping regulations for next fall. Perhaps the biggest change would apply to deer hunters. Iowa Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Bureau Chief Dale Garner says some areas of the state have too many deer, but other areas have dropped below or near department goals. “We would like to reduce the antlerless tags to stabilize the herd,” Garner said.
The proposed changes involve shortening the length of the January deer hunting season, eliminating the November antlerless season altogether and changing the early muzzleloader season to reduce the harvest in the antlerless portion of the deer herd. The proposals are meant to satisfy the concerns of hunters who believe deer reduction efforts have gone too far. The DNR estimates deer numbers in Iowa are down 30% compared to a high mark in 2006. Iowa hunters, during the recent 2011-12 deer hunting seasons, killed 121,407 deer — down 4.5% from the previous year. Changes are proposed for waterfowl hunting and trapping as well.
“We’re looking to potentially increase quotas for both otters and bobcats,” Garner said. “For migratory birds, we have an opportunity to possibly add a (third) zone to the state, which will impact us for four years, so this is a chance for people to think about what that might do.” The possible changes will be discussed during public meetings tonight from 6 to 9 p.m. at 18 locations across the state. The 2011-12 All-Big Ten Men’s Basketball Teams were announced live on the Big Ten Network Monday night. Michigan State star Draymond Green was the only unanimous first-team player and also won Player of the Year from the coaches and the media, while Green’s coach, Tom Izzo, claimed both Coach of the Year honors. As for the highly debated Freshman of the Year laurel, Trey Burke (media) and Cody Zeller (coaches) were both selected.
