KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Kansas State’s Jalana Childs scored a career-high 31 points to give the Wildcats a 67-63 win over Iowa State in a back-and-forth game in quarterfinal action at the Big 12 Women’s Championship Thursday in the Municipal Auditorium.
Iowa State (18-12 overall, 9-9 in Big 12 play) was down by as many as eight points in the second half before battling back to take a four-point lead. Childs, however, continued to make plays down the stretch, including a jumper to give KSU a 64-61 lead with 0:21 seconds left.
The Cyclones were led by Nikki Moody, who scored a career-high 21 points. Lauren Mansfield added 21 points, her third 20-point game of the season. The game featured seven ties and nine lead changes, as the Cyclones lost their first game in the Big Championship for only the third time in the 17-year Bill Fennelly era.
Iowa State made six-of-its-first-seven shots to jump out to an early 12-2 lead. However, KSU answered with a 13-2 run to go up 15-14 with 10:30 left in the first half. Mansfield then made back-to-back hoops for the Cyclones to push ISU back out in front, 18-15.
ISU leader Chelsea Poppens picked up her second foul with 9:14 left in the first half and had to sit the remainder of the first period, attempting one shot while playing just eight minutes. The Wildcats took advantage, forging a 33-29 halftime lead, as Childs had 12 first-half points. Mansfield scored 15 points and made 6-of-10 shots from the floor in the opening period to lead the Cyclones.
The Wildcats took their largest lead at eight points (37-29) after scoring the first four points of the second period. However, the Cyclones kept fighting back. An Anna Prins 3-pointer and a Mansfield bucket knotted the game at 46-46 with 11:30 remaining.
Childs had the answer again, scoring two-straight buckets for the Wildcats, but the Cyclones bounced back with a Mansfield drive and a Hallie Christofferson conventional 3-point play to move the Cyclones out in front, 51-50 with 7:45 left.
Moody made it an 8-0 Iowa State run with a drive and 3-point play to increase the Cyclone lead to 54-50, but the Wildcats followed with seven-straight points to go back up, 57-54 with under six minutes to play.
Moody knotted the game (59-59) with a steal and lay-in with 3:08 left, but Childs scored down low on KSU’s next possession to give KSU a 61-59 advantage with under two minutes left. Moments later Poppens and Childs traded buckets, as KSU held a 64-61 lead with 0:18 seconds left. Christofferson then buried a baseline jumper to cut the deficit to one point (64-63) with 0:16 seconds remaining.
Brittany Chambers connected on a pair of free-throws moments later setting up a Mansfield 3-pointer in the corner that went in-and-out at the closing seconds.
Iowa State outrebounded KSU, 36-34, grabbing 13 offensive boards. Christofferson had eight boards and nine points for the Cyclones.
Iowa State will wait to learn its postseason fate on Monday in the NCAA Women’s Championship Selection Show.
Matt Gatens made sure his Iowa career didn’t end on Thursday. The senior made a pair of late free throws to help seal the game as Iowa beat Illinois 64-61 in the first round of the Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament in Indianapolis. Gatens led the Hawkeyes with 20 points as they rallied from a four point halftime deficit. Freshman Aaron White had 13 points for Iowa. The biggest difference in the game was free throw shooting, Iowa was 12 of 19 from the stripe, the Illini never shot a free throw. Meyers Leonard led Illinois with 18 points, while D.J. Richardson and Joseph Bertrand each had 11. Iowa out-rebounded Illinois 34-32 and the Hawkeyes had nine steals and only turned the ball over six times. Iowa improves to 17-15 on the season and advances to the quarter-final round Friday when they will face top seed Michigan State. The game will tip off Friday morning at 11:00. BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Tight end Scott Chandler has agreed in principal to a two-year contract to re-sign with the Buffalo Bills less than a week before he was eligible to become a free agent, the player’s agent has told The Associated Press.
Rick E. Smith confirmed in an e-mail that his client had agreed to the deal Thursday morning. Chandler, a former Iowa Hawkeye player, announced the news himself by posting it on his Twitter account. Chandler wrote he’s “blessed to be back with the Bills,” and added there’s “nowhere else I want to be.”
Chandler had 38 catches for 389 yards and tied a single-season franchise record with six touchdowns last season.
He becomes the second key offensive player retained by the Bills before free agency opens next week. Buffalo re-signed leading receiver Stevie Johnson on Monday.
JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Rafael Furcal didn’t have to think too hard about re-signing with the St. Louis Cardinals, even after they declined to pick up his contract option.
Furcal, a trade deadline pickup who was one of the keys to the Cardinals’ World Series run, got a two-year, $14 million contract.
He filled voids last season at leadoff and at shortstop, where he helped to solidify the defense with one of the strongest arms at his position in the major leagues.
Danville made a push in the fourth quarter and grabbed a 65-49 win over Nodaway Valley in a Class 1-A boys state semi-final game Thursday morning. Danville led by three after three quarters, but a 19-6 final quarter advantage was the difference. The Bears made 15 of their 21 free throw attempts, had a 17-5 edge in second chance points and out-rebounded the Wolverines 40-26. Steven Soukup led Danville with 25 points and 13 rebounds, Collin Bartsch had 14 points and Michael Soukup added 13. Nodaway Valley was led by Alex Welsch with 17 points and 11 rebounds and T.J. Bower had 15 points. Danville improves to 27-0 and will play in the 1-A title game for the second straight year. Nodaway Valley falls to 23-3 and will play in the 1-A consolation game Friday morning.

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (AP) — Baseball’s Hall of Fame will honor three generations of St. Louis Cardinals’ World Series champions on July 21, the day before this year’s induction ceremonies. The Hall said Wednesday there will be a special recognition for the living managers who led the Cardinals to Series titles: Red Schoendienst (1967), Whitey Herzog (1982) and Tony La Russa (2006 and last year). Hall president Jeff Idelson says “these three managers have united a fan base for generations and provided endless memories for Cardinals fans everywhere.” Schoendienst and Herzog are both members of the Hall. La Russa also led Oakland to the 1989 championship. They will be praised during the Hall’s awards presentation, when Tim McCarver is honored for excellence in broadcasting and Toronto Sun columnist Bob Elliott is recognized for writing.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — University officials say newly-hired Iowa offensive line coach Brian Ferentz will report to athletics director Gary Barta and not his father, head coach Kirk Ferentz. The university on Wednesday released details of a plan to manage the conflict of interest between Brian Ferentz and his father, which is required under a school policy that discourages nepotism in hiring and salary decisions. Barta wrote in a memo that he was “very interested in pursuing” Brian Ferentz to join the football staff due to his experience and success as an assistant for the New England Patriots. Barta wrote that he, not Kirk Ferentz, interviewed four applicants for the job and recommended Brian Ferentz based on his “credentials and candidacy.” Under the plan, Barta will conduct Brian Ferentz’s annual performance review and compensation.
