AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State says forward Royce White will speak to reporters Wednesday amid speculation he could declare for the NBA draft.
White was the Big 12’s Newcomer of the Year. The 6-8, 270-pound sophomore from Minneapolis led the Cyclones with 13.4 points and 9.3 rebounds a game this season and helped Iowa State reach the NCAA tournament for the first time in seven years.
White was at his best in the tournament, scoring 23 points with nine rebounds in an 87-71 loss to top-seeded Kentucky on Saturday.
White began his career at Minnesota in 2009-10, but transferred to Iowa State without playing a game. He sat out the 2010 season before blossoming into the Cyclones’ most indispensable player.
KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) — Kyle Lohse will leave his new curveball in Florida when the season starts. “We tried it. That’s what spring training is for, to mess around with pitches,” Lohse said Tuesday after pitching five innings in his fourth spring start for the St. Louis Cardinals. “But if you don’t have confidence in something, you’re not going to be able to execute it. “It was a good pitch in the bullpen, but when I got in the game I couldn’t control it.” Lohse has gone back to his old curveball grip, and it worked well in a 6-1 exhibition victory over the Houston Astros. Coming off a 14-8 season that ended in a World Series start, Lohse gave up three hits Tuesday, including Chris Johnson’s second home run. Eric Komatsu, a Rule V acquisition from Washington, had three of the Cardinals’ 12 hits and scored twice.
Immediately after the game, the Astros acquired left-handed pitcher Kevin Chapman and a player to be named later from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for outfielder Jason Bourgeois and catcher Humberto Quintero. The Cardinals announced after the game that pitchers Chuckie Fick, Sam Freeman and Adam Ottavino had been optioned to Triple-A Memphis, and pitchers Trevor Rosenthal and R.J. Swindle, infielder Ryan Jackson and catcher Steven Hill have been reassigned.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Creighton coach Greg McDermott called North Carolina coach Roy Williams to say there was no intent to injure point guard Kendall Marshall when Ethan Wragge fouled him in Sunday’s NCAA tournament game in Greensboro, N.C.
Marshall had surgery on his broken right wrist Monday, and it’s uncertain whether he’ll play Friday against Ohio in the regional semifinals. The Tar Heels (31-5) are the No. 1 seed in the Midwest.
McDermott said Tuesday that Williams is a “good friend” and that he wanted to let the Tar Heels’ coach know that he was sorry Marshall was hurt.
The Bluejays have been criticized by some Carolina fans and analysts for being overly physical, perhaps dirty. McDermott said people who watched his team through the season wouldn’t describe the Bluejays as “physical.”
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — One of the hallmarks of the Iowa program under coach Kirk Ferentz has been the continuity of his staff.
Not this season.
For the first time since Ferentz took over before the 1999 season, the Hawkeyes enter spring ball with two new coordinators; Phil Parker on defense and Greg Davis on offense.
After back-to-back 4-4 finishes in the Big Ten, Ferentz says it was time to shake things up. Ferentz says the staff changes allowed the program to re-examine what it’s doing on both sides of the ball.
Iowa’s spring practice runs through April 14, when they host their annual open scrimmage in Kinnick Stadium.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs were in contact with Peyton Manning from the start, but general manager Scott Pioli said the former Indianapolis Colts quarterback had formulated a list of likely destinations early on.
Manning wound up agreeing to a $96 million, five-year deal with Denver.
Pioli said during a conference call with Tuesday that Manning was “up front about what he was doing, some of the visits he wanted to take, and we initially weren’t a part of that.”
Matt Cassel is expected to return as the Chiefs’ starting quarterback next season. Kansas City recently signed former Denver backup Brady Quinn to provide depth.
Pioli refused to get into details about his conversations with Manning and his agent, but he did say that Cassel was aware that discussions had taken place.
Fees for some of the Atlantic Parks and Recreation Department Programs will increase this year, while others remain unchanged. The Parks and Rec Board Monday voted to raise the price of sponsorships for men’s Slow Pitch Softball teams to $300 from $150. Parks and Rec Director Roger Herring says the fee is more in line with what other communities of similar size are charging, and it helps covers the cost of a 2-by 3-foot weather-resistant sponsor banner (which will be hung on the outfield fence), new fencing, and new surfacing on the in-fields. The cost of the banner is a one-time fee. The fee also pays for the service of an umpire for all three games each night. The season runs June 1st to August 12th, three nights per week, with three games per night.
The fee for joining the Swim Team has been bumped up from $20- to $25 for each participant. The team will be in action from June 1st to July 15th.Herring says the swimming pool at Sunnyside Park will be open May 23rd through September 3rd. Admission fees are unchanged from last year, at $4 for those 3-years of age and older. Children under the age of two will be admitted for free. Season passes are also unchanged from last year, and will run $105 for a family, and $70 for a single adult season pass. A family pass covers immediate family members residing at the same street address, and includes: children of divorced parents who have joint custody; step- and foster-children. Herring says each person will receive a laminated picture ID which must be presented on the day they plan to swim. Daycare providers will be offered a punch card for $4 per day. A 15 punch card will cost $50, which is a discount of $10. In the event of inclement weather, the passes will be honored at the Nishna Valley YMCA for use at their indoor pool.
In other business, Roger Herring said Monday, that the skate park will be open for use in about six-weeks. He says skate board enthusiasts will be able to enjoy a refurbished half-pipe. The ends of the half-pipe will be closed-off and vented to prevent debris and moisture from damaging the equipment. Herring says if enough money is left over, a couple of other, smaller pieces of skate board equipment, such as a ramp, a wedge and a “kicker” might be purchased, to add to the attraction.

Kansas City Royals closer Joakim Soria will have his sore right elbow checked by Dr. Lewis Yokum in Los Angeles on Tuesday.
Soria left Sunday’s game after retiring only one of five batters he faced and said after the outing that his elbow felt “really bad.”
Royals spokesman Mike Swanson said Monday the team believes Soria has some damage in his area of his ulnar collateral ligament.
Soria had Tommy John surgery on his elbow in 2003. He has been one of the best relievers in the American League since his rookie season of 2007, but his performance fell off last year. His ERA jumped to 4.03 and he had 28 saves, but lost the closer’s job at times.
