CINCINNATI (AP) — Matt Holliday, David Freese and Yadier Molina homered during the St. Louis Cardinals’ big first inning, and Jake Westbrook found his control after a rough start, beating the Cincinnati Reds 7-1 on Monday night. The defending World Series champions improved to 4-1 with an offense that hasn’t missed Albert Pujols so far. Only 20 pitches into the game, Reds starter Homer Bailey (0-1) trailed 4-0. It was the second time this season that St. Louis hit three homers in an inning. Molina also doubled home a pair of runs in the eighth. Westbrook (1-0) overcame an early bout of wildness, allowing only three hits and one unearned run in seven innings. Reds All-Star second baseman Brandon Phillips left the game with a hamstring cramp.

Sports

April 8th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Lance Lynn pitched two-hit ball into the seventh inning and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Milwaukee Brewers 9-3 on Sunday, taking two out of three games from their NL Central rivals to start the season. Ryan Braun hit his first home run of the year for the Brewers, a solo shot with the game well out of reach in the ninth. It was the third career start for Lynn (1-0), who played a key relief role during the Cardinals’ championship run last season. The 24-year-old right-hander was added to the rotation after Chris Carpenter went on the disabled list with a shoulder problem this spring. Corey Hart had a solo homer in the fifth for Milwaukee after hitting a pair of home runs Saturday. Next up for the Red Birds, is a trip to Cincinnati, to take on the Reds. You can catch the first game of that series Monday evening with the pre-game show at 5:15, on KJAN.

Interest for Iowa City to Host 2016 Wrestling Trial

Sports

April 8th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – The 2012 U.S. Olympic team wrestling trials are two weeks away but there’s already interest in bringing the event back to Iowa City in 2016.  Josh Schamberger, president of the Iowa City-Coralville Convention and Visitors Bureau, says there is “a real good chance” USA Wrestling will want Iowa City to host the event again. He told the Iowa City Press-Citizen that there is a bid process for the event but a likely sellout for the 2012 event is promising for the future.  Schamberger says more than 11,000 tickets have been sold for this year’s trials, set for April 21-22 at the Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The trial will determine who’ll wrestle for the United States in the London Olympics.

Hart Homers Twice, Brewers Beat Cardinals 6-0

Sports

April 7th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Corey Hart homered twice, Zack Greinke pitched three-hit ball for seven innings and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-0 on Saturday. Rickie Weeks homered while Aramis Ramirez and Carlos Gomez add RBI doubles for the Brewers, who rebounded after dropping Friday’s season opener. Ryan Braun had a pair of doubles and drew a walk after going 0 for 5 on Friday. Greinke (1-0) continued the dominant form he showed at Miller Park all last season. He didn’t walk a batter and struck out seven. Greinke’s strong outing overshadowed the long-awaited return to the mound for the Cardinals’ Adam Wainwright, who missed all of the 2011 season after having elbow surgery.
