April 30th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES (AP) — Sprinter Wallace Spearmon, Jr. and pole vaulter Jenn Suhr have been named the Most Outstanding Performers for this year’s Drake Relays. Spearmon won the men’s 200 meters in 20.02 seconds on Saturday, breaking Michael Johnson’s 15-year-old meet record. Suhr set a new meet record with a winning effort of 15 feet, 3 inches on Saturday after winning an indoor exhibition at a nearby mall earlier in the week. James Harrington of Cedar Falls High and Erin Hawkins of Des Moines Roosevelt High earned the honors for the prep divisions. Fifteen Drake Relays records fell during this year’s meet, which was plagued by chilly and windy conditions during the final two days of competition.

Atlantic Coach Kathy Hobson says:  On a cold day, I was pleased with our effort.  The Walter sisters being tied at the end was a highlight and good, team fun waiting for the announcement of who handicapped who out for a higher placing.  Kaitlynn Walter’s 91 also included a nice 41 on the back after struggling with a 50 on the front.  Shelby Worth had a good round shooting 100 on this course for the first time which included a chip in.  And Malachi Wickman had a wonderful back 9 for her best 9 hole score of the season.  Playing this course today was important to us as Kuemper is hosting the Hawkeye 10 Conference meet in a week.

Bike and Trails Expo this evening in Atlantic

Ag/Outdoor, News, Sports

April 30th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

A Bike and Trails expo is being held this evening, in Atlantic. Dave Chase with the Nishna Valley Trails group says it’s an opportunity for the public to learn about bike trail development in the area, along with the potential for economic development as a result of progress on the trails, and wellness benefits. The evening begins with a guest speaker. Mark Wyatt, Executive Director of the Iowa Bicycle Coalition (http://iowabicyclecoalition.org.) will speak with regard to bike trails throughout the state, and bicycle safety. Chase says Iowa is one of the leading states for mileage of recreational trails in the country, due in large part to the enthusiasm for bicycling, with RAGBRAI sparking a great deal of interest in the sport.

Chase says the Iowa Bicycle Coalition was developed to promote those types of activities, and to establish legislation designed to enhance those types of projects, along with safety education.” He says an update will also be made available during the expo, on the status of extending the bike trail from the Schildberg Recreation Area to the trail head just west of Highway 71, northeast of Atlantic. The public is invited to provide input on those plans, as well. Chase says it’s hoped the expo will reach those persons whose bikes may have been idle for a long time, to show them what trails are available in the area, that they are safe, and how to ride safe. He says they don’t encourage people to ride on the county roads and highways, unless they are experienced riders. Chase says that’s also why it’s important to develop safe routes.

The expo will feature displays, refreshments, door prizes…including the giveaway of two bikes…and displays of unusual bikes. It takes place at the Cass County Community Center in Atlantic, beginning at 7-p.m.  There is no charge for admission.

Iowans play it safe with new CyHawk Trophy

Sports

April 30th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The reaction last summer to a proposed trophy for the Iowa-Iowa State football game depicting a farm family huddled around a bushel of corn was so negative that officials let the fans pick a design to replace it. The folks in Iowa have spoken. After the last trophy debacle, they’ve chosen to play it safe. Barring a major late rally, the winner of an online vote that ends Monday just before midnight depicts the teams’ mascots, Cy for the Cyclones and Herky for the Hawkeyes, standing under a football and in front of corn.

CyHawk Trophy - Mascot Version

As it stands now, the vote count is approaching 10,000 and the leading design is the mascot version.

For those last minute voters, a couple lucky ones today (Monday) will receive- “I Rocked the Cy-Hawk Trophy Vote” t-shirts. When the voting closes, the winning trophy design will officially be announced and the final version will be on the sidelines on Saturday, Sept. 8th in Iowa City, when the Cyclones and Hawkeyes meet in this year’s kickoff event to the 2012-13 Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series.

April 29th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Zack Greinke worked six strong innings and Jonathan Lucroy’s two-run double capped a three-run sixth as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2 Sunday to avoid a three-game sweep. Greinke (3-1) allowed a run on seven hits to help stop the Brewers’ six-game road losing streak. He’s 2-1 with a 2.11 ERA in four career games in St. Louis. He pitched a lot better than in his only other road start this year, when he surrendered eight runs in 3 2-3 innings at Chicago on April 12.   Jaime Garcia (2-1) fell to 17-10 at home with a 2.38 ERA and all three of his shutouts, and 12-7 with 4.15 ERA on the road.

Police say Telford refused to take a breath test.  The redshirt freshman finished the season 29-9 and placed fifth at the NCAA tournament. Molina Blasts Cardinals to Win

Sports

April 29th, 2012 by admin

ST. LOUIS (AP) – St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina received two awards for his defense before Saturday’s game with the Milwaukee Brewers. It was his offense that stole the show.

Molina went 4-for-4 with a two-run homer to lead the Cardinals to a 7-3 win over Milwaukee. Molina has 10 four-hit games in his career, the last coming on May 22, 2011, against Kansas City.

He has always been known for his defense as evidenced by the pregame presentation of his fourth consecutive Rawlings Gold Glove as a catcher and the inaugural Rawlings Platinum Glove awarded to the game’s best overall fielder. Now he has become a force offensively as well, hitting .305 with 14 homers and 65 RBIs last season, all career highs.
