IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Hall of Fame basketball coach Don Nelson returned to the University of Iowa on Saturday to receive his bachelor’s degree in physical education, 50 years after leaving school for the NBA. Nelson left school in 1962 needing to finish eight hours of Spanish and a student-teaching requirement. Meanwhile, Nelson took classes as a player with the Celtics and coach in Golden State. This year, the university finally agreed to waive his student-teaching requirement because of Nelson’s three-plus decades coaching in the NBA. Nelson, the all-time winningest coach in NBA history with 1,355 wins, says it’s never too late to get a degree. He said he was inspired to get his degree by Shaquille O’Neal, who recently went back to LSU and got his degree.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – The owners of third-place Kentucky Derby finisher Dullahan say the colt won’t be running in the Preakness Stakes on May 19.  Trainer Dale Romans says the Preakness would be Dullahan’s third race in just five weeks and the horse would be “best served” by sitting it out.  Dullahan will run next in the Belmont Stakes on June 9, the final leg of the Triple Crown races.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jason Heyward hit a two-run homer in the 12th inning and the Atlanta Braves beat St. Louis 9-7 on Friday night, ruining the Cardinals’ celebration honoring former manager Tony La Russa. Dan Uggla homered and Michael Bourn had three hits for the Braves. Craig Kimbrel gave up a hit but struck out two for his NL-leading 11th save in 12 chances. Carlos Beltran homered twice during a four-hit day for the Cardinals that also included a two-run triple. Matt Carpenter and Allen Craig also went deep. A sellout crowd was on hand to watch the Cardinals retire La Russa’s No. 10 in a pregame ceremony that included several of the managers’ former players.

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — Riley Reiff and the rest of Detroit’s draft picks are settling in at rookie minicamp. Reiff was on the field Friday, although coach Jim Schwartz says it’s hard to evaluate the offensive lineman from Iowa when there’s no contact in practice. Wide receiver Ryan Broyles, a second-round pick out of Oklahoma, was on the field but wore a baseball hat and didn’t do much. He’s coming off major knee surgery. The Lions had signed six of their eight draft picks to four-year deals by Thursday, and cornerback Dwight “Bill” Bentley — a third-rounder from Louisiana-Lafayette — said he reached a deal before practice Friday. Reiff is still without an agreement but is participating in the three-day minicamp anyway.
