The opening weekend of action at the Iowa Speedway is just a few days away and it will be capped off by Sunday’s running of the Pioneer Hi-Bred 250, the first of two NASCAR Nationwide Series races at the track this season. Iowa Speedway C-E-O Doug Fritz say the first Nationwide race in 2011 drew more than 37,800 fans and another big crowd will watch this weekend. The track opens for practice on Saturday morning.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Alfonso Soriano singled in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning and the Chicago Cubs sent the St. Louis Cardinals to their fourth straight loss at home with a 6-4 victory on Monday night. Bryan LaHair had three hits for the Cubs, including a two-run homer to break a 1-for-14 slump. Chicago’s late rally wasn’t enough to make a winner of starter Ryan Dempster, whose winless streak reached 15 starts dating to last August. Shawn Camp (2-1) allowed one hit in two innings of work and Rafael Dolis worked the ninth for his fourth save in six chances. Jake Westbrook became the latest Cardinal starter who couldn’t pitch deep into the game, allowing four runs on 11 hits in five innings. Of the other four pitchers during this run through the St. Louis rotation, only rookie Lance Lynn lasted six innings. Mitchell Boggs (0-1) took the loss.

Girls distrcit golf meets will be held today.  In class 1-A at the Griswold Golf & Country Club, A-H-S-T, Audubon, Coon Rapids-Bayard, Exira/EHK, Glidden-Ralston, Griswold, Nodaway Valley, Riverside and Woodbine will compete.  Also in class 1-A, Mount Ayr will host Bedford, Corning, East Mills, Fremont-Mills, Lamoni, Lenox, Nishnabotna Sidney and Villisca.  Guthrie Center will be among the teams playing in the meet at Pleasantville today.

In class 2-A, Clarinda will host CAM/Adar-Casey, Central Decatur, I-35, Shenandoah, St. Albert, Treynor and Underwood.  Also min class 2-A at Ida Grove, Maple Valley, East Sac County, IKM-Manning, Logan-Magnolia, Missouri Valley, OA-BCIG, South Central Calhoun and Tri-Center will battle.

Iowa motorists will notice more two-wheelers on the road this morning as part of Bike to Work Week. Whether it’s for exercise, to save money or to live a greener lifestyle, Iowa Bicycle Coalition executive director Mark Wyatt says plenty of people are turning to pedal power, and not just for a week. He encourages Iowans to give biking to work a spin.  “A lot of times your commute is much shorter than you can even imagine and it’s pretty comparable by car,” Wyatt says. “It’s easy. If you really want to start, give it a try it on a weekend and get out there and see how long your commute’s going to be and help with your timing and such.” Common complaints are that people don’t want to be all sweaty when they get to work, or that their hair will be messed up from wearing a bike helmet.

“You can take your clothes to work,” Wyatt says. “Hair products are portable so it’s really easy to set up there at work, towel off and change clothes before you go on about your day.” One study found that biking to work instead of driving a car can save six-to-seven-thousand dollars a year. While the winter months pose a challenge in Iowa, Wyatt says there’s no valid excuse to not try biking to work this spring — and this week. “We have 1,600 miles of trails available for people to use and countless number of bike lanes that are starting to pop up in urban areas,” Wyatt says. “As far as bike friendliness, we’re ranked #6 so there’s plenty of opportunities you can get out and bike on facilities designated for bicycles.” In the ten years since his organization started promoting Bike to Work Week in Iowa, Wyatt says the number of participants has grown from a few hundred to several thousand statewide. He says it’s easy to get involved and before you get on the road, you can start online.

“Go to www.bikeiowa.com or www.iowagoesbybicycle.com,” Wyatt says. “We have a national bicycle challenge that we’re participating in so users can log their miles and keep track of how long it takes to get to work and how much fun you’re having along the way.” There are a host of rides, races and other bike-related events over the coming weeks as part of National Bike Month.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jason Heyward ended a 10-pitch at-bat with a bases-clearing double in third inning, helping the Atlanta Braves give rookie Lance Lynn his first loss and beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-4 Sunday to complete a three-game sweep. Tommy Hanson (4-3) allowed one run in five innings with nine strikeouts and Martin Prado, Freddie Freeman and Dan Uggla each had an RBI in a three-run seventh. The Braves had lost seven in a row in St. Louis before Friday and swept the Cardinals for the first time since Sept. 11-13, 2009, also in St. Louis. Lynn (6-1) missed a chance to become the franchise’s first pitcher to win his first seven starts of the season dating to 1920, according to STATS LLC. Carlos Beltran homered for the sixth time in six games with his league-leading 13th of the season and Allen Craig hit a three-run homer off Cristhian Martinez in the ninth for his third hit of the game.
