Fennelly shakes up coaching staff

Sports

June 8th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State coach Bill Fennelly has promoted assistant Jodi Steyer to associate head coach and moved his son, Billy Fennelly, up to an assistant’s position. The Cyclones have also assigned strength and conditioning coach Pete Link to work with the women’s basketball team. Link had previously trained athletes in Olympic sports. Steyer has worked with Fennelly since 1989, when he hired her as his assistant while at Toledo. Steyer has worked with Iowa State’s backcourt and Fennelly says she’s one of the best assistants in the country. Billy Fennelly spent the past two seasons as the team’s director of player development.

URGENT — I’ll Have Another Scratched from Belmont

Sports

June 8th, 2012 by Jim Field

NEW YORK (AP) — I’ll Have Another’s bid for a Triple Crown ended with the shocking news that the colt was out of the Belmont Stakes due to a swollen left front tendon.

According to Dennis O’Neill, brother of trainer Doug O’Neill, the horse galloped Friday morning and after a veterinary scan, the tendon seemed “kind of tender.”

O’Neill told The Associated Press that, “the horse is sound and happy, but it’s not worth it.”

Iowa-owned Dullahan: best odds to trip up Triple Crown

Sports

June 8th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

A horse owned by a group of Iowans is considered to have the best shot at denying the first Triple Crown winner since 1978.  At tomorrow’s (Saturday’s) Belmont Stakes in New York, I’ll Have Another is favored to win and become only the 12th horse to sweep the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness and Belmont.

Horse owner Jerry Crawford (On the left) & "Dullahan"

But, many people are betting on Dullahan, the colt that finished third in the Derby and sat out the Preakness. Des Moines lawyer Jerry Crawford is with Donegal  Racing, which owns Dullahan. He says the potential for a Triple Crown winner drew 140 television and print photographers to a Belmont press conference on Wednesday. “They told that last year, when there wasn’t a Triple Crown on the line, there were about a dozen (photographers),” Crawford told Radio Iowa. “Whenever something’s a big deal in New York City, it’s a really big deal. I told them that they had more cameras than we have people in Iowa.”

Dullahan drew post number five for the mile and a half race. I’ll Have Another will start from post 11. Crawford said, regardless of the outcome, he and his Donegal partners will remember this week for the rest of their lives. “This has been really one of those magnificent experiences you have in life that you get to share with family and close friends,” Crawford said. “I’m just hoping that our horse can bring home the trophy and make all of Iowa proud.” The post time for the Belmont Stakes – featuring I’ll Have Another, Dullahan, and 10 other horses – is set for 5:40 p.m. (CDT) tomorrow.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Kansas State’s Erik Kynard successfully defended his high jump title Thursday in the NCAA outdoor track and field championships, clearing 7 feet, 8 inches. Kynard held off Indiana’s Derek Drouin in a thrilling final, though his stab at tying the collegiate record of 7-9 3/4 fell short. Boise State’s Kurt Felix won the decathlon with 8,062 points, while Tim Glover defended his title in the javelin with a throw of 268 feet. Southern Illinois’s Jeneva McCall, won the women’s hammer throw at 225-3 after finishing second last year, and TCU’s Whitney Gipson took the long jump at 22-4 1/2. Texas A&M’s Natosha Rogers won the 10,000 meters in 32 minutes, 41.63 seconds. LSU star Kimberlyn Duncan topped her own world-leading time in the 200 by qualifying for the final in 22.19.
