June 27th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

MIAMI (AP) — Yadier Molina hit a three-run homer and Kyle Lohse pitched into the eighth inning to lead the St. Louis Cardinals past the staggering Miami Marlins 5-2 on Tuesday night for their fifth straight victory. One night after Molina’s tying homer in the ninth inning keyed a huge comeback, St. Louis scored five unearned runs in the first. The Marlins have lost eight of nine and are 3-17 in their last 20 games. Lohse (7-2) allowed two runs and four hits while striking out four to lower his ERA to 2.82. Jason Motte pitched the ninth for his 16th save in 20 chances.

Hoiberg Earns Highest Honor By The Jaycees

Sports

June 26th, 2012 by Jim Field

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State head men’s basketball coach Fred Hoiberg was awarded the Ten Outstanding Young Americans (TOYA) award presented by the United States Junior Chamber (Jaycees).

The TOYA award has been presented annually since 1938 and has included such individuals as President John F. Kennedy, President Bill Clinton, Vice President Joe Biden and NFL quarterback Peyton Manning.

The prestigious award is handed out to people aged 18 through 40 who exemplify immense accomplishment and/or leadership in the community.

A native of Ames, Iowa, the 39-year-old Hoiberg returned to his hometown and alma mater to coach the Iowa State men’s basketball team. In just his second season, “The Mayor” led the Cyclones to one of the biggest turnarounds in Big 12 history in 2012. Iowa State tied for third in the Big 12 (12-6) and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2005.

Hoiberg, who was named Big 12’s Co-Coach of the Year in 2012, was an All-American and Academic All-American at Iowa State from 1992-95. He later went onto a successful 10-year NBA career after graduation.

Hoiberg will attend the 74th annual TOYA ceremony this weekend (June 30th) in Des Moines.

Arizona wins national title with 4-1 win over SC

Sports

June 26th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Brandon Dixon’s tie-breaking double started a three-run ninth inning for Arizona, and the Wildcats won their first national title since 1986 with a 4-1 victory over two-time defending champion South Carolina on Monday night. James Farris and Mathew Troupe combined to limit the Gamecocks to three hits as the Wildcats won their fourth title overall. The others came in 1976 and 1980. Dixon, who entered the game in the sixth inning, sent a grounder down the third-base line past LB Dantzler for his first hit of the CWS. Tyler Webb relieved Matt Price (5-5), and Trent Gilbert drove in his second and third runs of the game with a two-out single that broke open the game. South Carolina was trying to become the first team in 40 years to win three consecutive national titles. The Gamecocks loaded the bases against Troupe (6-1) in the ninth but couldn’t score.
