Iowa State football will play host to West Virginia on Friday, Nov. 23, the day after Thanksgiving. The game will kickoff at 2:30 p.m. CST on ABC-TV.
The Cyclones have never played West Virginia, a new member of the Big 12 Conference. It will mark Iowa State’s first Black Friday game since 1902.
Iowa is set to play host to Nebraska the same day. That game will kickoff at 11:00 a.m. CST on ABC as well, creating a Black Friday doubleheader in the state of Iowa.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Rafael Furcal singled home the winning run with two outs in the 12th inning and St. Louis Cardinals dampened the Dodgers debut of Hanley Ramirez, beating Los Angeles 3-2 Wednesday night. Ramirez tripled on the first pitch he saw with his new team. The three-time All-Star infielder, acquired late Tuesday night from Miami, went 2 for 4 with a walk. He drove in a run and scored once. Lance Berkman, who left a day earlier with a bruised right knee after being hit by a pitch, drew a one-out walk as a pinch hitter in the St. Louis 12th from Jamey Wright (4-3). Matt Carpenter singled with two outs and Furcal drove home pinch runner Joe Kelly.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The demolition of Rosenblatt Stadium, the longtime home of the College World Series in Omaha has begun. A large backhoe began knocking down pillars at the stadium entrance on Wednesday. Rosenblatt was home to college baseball’s premier event from 1950 to 2010, but has stood mostly idle the past two years. Russ Mapes was among some 50 people who showed up to pay their final respects. The retired police officer watched his first game at the stadium in the early 1960s. He took a few pictures and left before the backhoe showed up. He said he couldn’t bear to watch. The Omaha Zoo Foundation bought the property to expand the adjacent zoo. The series is now held at a new ballpark downtown.
Hunters in Iowa shot a record low number of pheasants last year. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources estimates 109-thousand pheasants were harvested in 2011 — the fewest since record keeping began in 1962. DNR wildlife biologist Todd Bogenschutz was expecting the numbers to be low following five winters with above average snowfall and five wetter than normal springs. “Was I expecting the harvest to be this much lower? No, probably not, I was figuring around 150,000 to 200,000 would probably be our harvest,” Bogenschutz said. The estimate is based on a random survey of hunters.
Harvest estimates were highest in northwest Iowa. The DNR will conduct a roadside survey over the first two weeks of August to gauge what hunters can expect this year. Bogenschutz is predicting a significant increase in pheasant numbers. “Based on field reports from staff, seeing broods this year, obviously this is probably our best production year in the last six,” Bogenschutz said. “We had good winter survival of the hens that were there. That was key.” The 2012 pheasant and quail hunting seasons will open October 27.
The DNR also reports an estimated 57,285 mourning doves were harvested during Iowa’s inaugural mourning dove hunting season. Around 9,000 resident and nonresident licenses were purchased for dove hunting. “This second year, I would suspect maybe we’ll see both of those bump up. We’ll have some more hunters and that will lead to additional harvest,” Bogenschutz said. “Our staff is kind of learning the ropes on dove management, so we have a few more actively managed areas out there for doves that hunters can use.” The 2012 mourning dove hunting season is tentatively scheduled to begin on September 1.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – Anyone going out to the Omaha Storm Chasers ball game on Aug. 1 won’t be able to buy peanuts or, for that matter, Cracker Jack popcorn. The Pacific Coast League affiliate of the Kansas City Royals will take anything containing peanuts off its concessions menu for the game against the Reno Aces. The Storm Chasers and an Omaha allergy clinic are holding Peanut Free Night to bring awareness to people who have peanut allergies. Several minor-league baseball teams have held peanut-free games for years, and major-league teams occasionally reserve sections of their stadiums for people who have peanut allergies. About 3 million Americans are allergic to peanuts or foods containing peanuts.
ST. LOUIS (AP) – St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter expects to begin a rehab program next week following surgery to relieve nerve compression that left his arm and much of the right side of his body numb. The 37-year-old Carpenter gave no guarantee Tuesday that he’d be back without a doubt next season. But Carpenter said the surgeon, Dr. Greg Pearl of Dallas, told him there were no complications. Carpenter’s top rib was removed along with two of the connecting muscles. He was injured in spring training and last pitched as the Game 7 World Series winner last fall.
ST. LOUIS (AP) – Lance Berkman of the St. Louis Cardinals was taken out for a pinch runner not long after getting hit by a pitch on his surgically-repaired right knee in the third inning of Tuesday’s game against the Dodgers. Trainers attended to Berkman after he was struck by a breaking ball from the Dodgers’ Clayton Kershaw to lead off the inning.
Berkman took his base but only trotted to second when Daniel Descalso followed with a single. After a chat with third base coach Jose Oquendo, Matt Carpenter replaced Berkman on the bases, and then took over at first base. Berkman is batting .281 with a homer and six RBIs in 21 games. He’s just 4 for 22 with two RBIs and two doubles since coming off the 15-day disabled list to start the second half without a rehab stint following surgery in late May.
