Cyclones prepare for next level

Sports

January 7th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

Several Iowa State football players saw their college season come to an end in the New Year’s Eve bowl game loss to Tulsa, but several are likely to continue their football careers at the next level. Defensive lineman, Jake McDonough of Urbandale overcame injuries to play at I-S-U, and now is looking forward to the next step.  “I will be training from here on out, and then I’ll have an internship to finish out my college career. I’ll graduate in May, and then hopefully I can pursue my career in the N-F-L,” McDonough says.

Jake Knott had to watch the last part of his senior season from the sidelines after an injury, but is happy the way it turned out overall. “First of all I’ve just been luck to be surrounded by the people I have been, the coaching and all that. In this day and age in college football to have the same coach and head coach for four years straight is awesome and says a lot about where the program is headed,” Knott says. While Knott will now try to make it into the N-F-L, his brother is preparing to try and fill his spot on the Cyclone defense.

Knott says his brother has been playing the linebacker position since mid-season and has impressed him with what he has done. He says it will be interesting to see how his brother or anyone else who steps into the position does next season. It will be a big hole in the defense to fill, as Knott’s runningmate at linebacker, A-J Klein, is also graduating expected to be an N-F-L prospect.

No. 2 Michigan rolls past Iowa 95-67

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) – Trey Burke had 19 points and a career-high 12 assists, part of another stellar offensive performance from No. 2 Michigan in a 95-67 win over Iowa on Sunday. Glenn Robinson III added 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Wolverines, who had only 17 points with 7:00 remaining in the first half before overwhelming the Hawkeyes (11-4, 0-2 Big Ten) with a flurry of dunks, 3-pointers and other highlights.

Michigan (15-0, 2-0) is a win away from matching the program’s best start to a season. The 1985-86 team began 16-0. Devyn Marble scored 14 points for the Hawkeyes, who were holding opponents to 37 percent shooting before facing Michigan. The Wolverines shot 58 percent from the field and 10 of 22 from 3-point range.

LUBBOCK, Texas – Iowa State was hot early and hustled late to earn a 58-54 Big 12 road win at Texas Tech Saturday in United Spirit Arena. Some of the credit must go to Iowa State (11-1 overall, 2-0 Big 12) head coach Bill Fennelly, who saved his timeouts in the first half for key situations late, despite a couple of Lady Raider runs. Consequently, he saw his team tally its third-ever win at Texas Tech (11-3 overall, 1-1 Big 12). The Cyclones are 2-0 in the Big 12 Conference for the first time since the 2004-05 season.

Hallie Christofferson was 5-of-5 from the floor, making both of her three-point attempts to pace Iowa State with 13 points. Chelsea Poppens scored the last two of her eight points in the final two seconds of the game to ice the Cyclone victory. She made a game-high 15 rebounds in a contest in which no other player on either team earned double figures on the boards. It was her 36th career game with more than 10 rebounds. Iowa State outscored Texas Tech 16-3 off the bench.

Iowa State plays at Baylor Wednesday at 7 p.m. CST in Waco, Texas.

Missouri State led 36-26 at halftime and never looked back.

Joey King led Drake with 21 points and seven rebounds. Ben Simons had 17 points. Chris Hines had 10 for the Bulldogs (6-8, 0-3) before fouling out.
