Sports

January 19th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Aaron White scored 17 points and Iowa hung on to beat Wisconsin 70-66 on Saturday night, knocking the Badgers out of first place in the Big Ten. Devyn Marble added 13 for the Hawkeyes, which picked up their biggest win of the season on the 20th anniversary of the death of former player Chris Street.

Iowa (13-5, 2-3 Big Ten) jumped ahead by 20 points late in the first half and held off a late charge by the Badgers (13-5, 4-1), which beat second-ranked Indiana 64-59 on Tuesday. George Marshall had 20 points, all in the second half, but the Badgers became the last Big Ten team to lose a league game. Wisconsin fell a half of a game behind Michigan State in the standings with the loss.

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Stan Musial, one of baseball’s greatest hitters and a Hall of Famer with the St. Louis Cardinals for more than two decades, has died. He was 92.  Stan the Man won seven National League batting titles, was a three-time MVP and helped the Cardinals capture three World Series championships in the 1940s. The Cardinals announced Musial’s death in a news release. They said he died Saturday evening at his home surrounded by family.

Musial was so revered in St. Louis, two statues of him stand outside Busch Stadium. He spent his entire 22-year career with the Cardinals and made the All-Star team 24 times – baseball held two All-Star games each summer for a few seasons.

Iowa State looks for its third consecutive Big 12 win when it faces TCU on the road this afternoon, for the first time as a league opponent. The Cyclones are seventh in the nation in scoring offense, while TCU is 344th with just 55.1 points per game. Hawkeyes host Big Ten leader WI tonight (Saturday)

Sports

January 19th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

Iowa takes a 1-3 Big Ten mark into a match-up at home against Wisconsin, tonight (Saturday). The Badgers lead the Big Ten with a 4-0 record after a stunning victory at second ranked Indiana but Iowa coach Fran McCaffery is not surprised by the Badgers early success. He says with Wisconsin, “It almost doesn’t matter who’s there. It’s a system in-place, a mentality that they have, that are going to compete, they’re going to play well. They have guys that can shoot, defend and execute.” McCaffery says “They’re going to be hard to beat.”

Iowa officials will honor the 20th anniversary of the death of former Hawkeye Chris Street at Saturday’s game. McCaffery says Street’s legacy is still a big part of the program. He says there’s  a golf outing and a foundation in Street’s name, and people still talk about him and how he played the game. McCaffrey says “It’s important that his legacy be remembered, and that the connection is maintained.” He thinks tonight’s game will be an emotional time for a lot of people.

Pre-game coverage of tonight’s game begins at 6 o’clock, here on KJAN.

Cardinals agree to 1-year deals with Boggs, Mujica

Sports

January 19th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) – The St. Louis Cardinals have agreed to terms with pitchers Mitchell Boggs and Edward Mujica on one-year contracts, avoiding salary arbitration.  Boggs gets $1,475,000 after earning $506,000 last season. Mujica got a $3.2 million deal after making $1,625,000 a year ago.

Boggs appeared in a career-high 78 games last season and his 2.21 ERA ranked sixth among NL relievers. Mujica had a 1.03 ERA in 29 games after arriving in a trade-deadline deal from Miami, shoring up the St. Louis bullpen and not allowing a run in his first 18 games with the Cardinals.

The club also exchanged arbitration figures Friday with third baseman David Freese and pitchers Jason Motte and Marc Rzepczynski.  Freese, the MVP of the 2011 World Series and NLCS, asked for $3.75 million and was offered $2.4 million. Motte submitted $5.5 million and was offered $4.5 million. Rzepczynski requested $1.3 million while the Cardinals proposed $900,000.
