IOWA CITY, Iowa – Former University of Iowa catcher Tyler Cropley has been called up from Double-A Northwest Arkansas to the Kansas City Royals. The official transaction took place Saturday.

“I’m so happy for Tyler,” said head coach Rick Heller. “He’s such a great catcher, leader and teammate. Tyler has worked hard, stayed committed and never gave up. We are all proud of him. He’s a big leaguer now.”

The McCook Lake, South Dakota, native was hitting .234 with four home runs and 17 RBIs for the Naturals in 2023.

Cropley played for the Hawkeyes from 2017-18. He hit a team-best .342 with 20 doubles, nine home runs, 50 RBIs and 43 runs scored as a senior. He was a named a second-team All-American by Collegiate Baseball and was a semifinalist for the Johnny Bench Award.

Cropley was selected in the eighth round of the 2018 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Washington Nationals with the 251st pick. He was the first Hawkeye catcher drafted in top eight rounds since 1972.

Cropley is the third player in Heller’s Iowa tenure to get the call to the Majors, joining Nick Allgeyer and Mason McCoy. He is the eighth player to reach MLB who played under Heller, joining Sean Manaea, Dakota Bacus, Colin Rea, Jake Petricka and Ryan Strausborger — all of whom played for Heller at Indiana State.

The Royals face the Toronto Blue Jays today at 2:07 p.m. (CT) at the Rodgers Center in Toronto, Canada.

Candidates will add to the already busy atmosphere for the Cy-Hawk game in Ames

News, Sports

September 9th, 2023 by Jim Field

Extra security will be on hand Saturdayin Ames as former President Donald Trump and other G-O-P presidential contenders join the crowd on hand for the Iowa-Iowa State football game. I-S-U police chief, Michael Newton, says the candidates make a big day even bigger.

He says security teams will try to minimize the disruption for football fans coming and going to Jack Trice Stadium. But he says people should expect to spend some extra time in the gameday traffic.

He says his department made mutual aid requests to other state, local and federal agencies to be sure enough law enforcement officers will be on hand. Republican candidates Vivek Ramaswamy, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson also have plans to be in Ames on gameday. Newton made his comments on the Iowa Public Radio show “River to River.”

Trojans Struggle on the Road against Greene County

Sports

September 8th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

(Jefferson) — It was a tough night for the Trojans in Jefferson. Greene County found a rhythm early and went on to win 41-6 over Atlantic. Turnovers and penalties proved to be a challenge for Atlantic.

The game started with a quick sweep to Trey Schilling for 25 yards and the inaugural score. Atlantic would fumble on the following drive. Then a field goal shortly followed by Nathan Behne who went 2-3 on field goals and the game was 10-0. The Trojan offense came back out and fumbled again on the snap. Then again the Rams drove down the field and scored on a 6 yard touchdown pitch to Nick Stream. It was 17-0 Greene County.

The Trojan offense stalled and Gabe Ebersole took his team back down the field. Ebersole then called his own number and sprinted into the end zone on a 14 yard touchdown run. The game turned into 24-0.

After an Atlantic interception to Jack Hansen and a fumble recovery for the Trojans. Atlantic had their best drive of the night thanks to Gavin McLaren punching it in from the one yard line to make the game 24-6 at half.

In the second half things didn’t change for the Trojans and Greene County found their stride again. Ebersole dropped back and threw a 48 yard spiral to Jack Hansen on the sideline for a score. The game was now 31-6. Nathan Behne chipped in another 37 yard field goal and the game was slipping away from Atlantic, 34-6 Greene County.

The last score of the game was near the end of the third quarter. Ebersole took the snap and glided his way into the end zone for another 14 yard touchdown. The Rams led 41-6 and neither team would score again.

Atlantic Coach Joe Brummer recognized the disappointing performance from Atlantic

Penalties and turnovers were a thorn for Atlantic on Friday night. The Trojans finished with 7 total turnovers and 13 penalties. Coach Brummer did manage to find a few positives from his team.

However, Coach Brummer and the Trojans are looking to bounce back against Winterset at home next Friday.

Iowa State hosts Iowa in 70th meeting

Sports

September 8th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

Iowa State hosts Iowa in the 70th meeting of the series in Ames. The game will feature two new quarterbacks. Iowa’s Cade McNamara is a Michigan transfer and led the Hawkeyes to a 24-14 season opening win over Utah State.

That’s Cyclone coach Matt Campbell who says the Hawkeyes have an experienced offense.

Redshirt freshman Rocco Becht gets his second start at quarterback for a Cyclone offense that has had difficulty finding the end zone against the Hawkeyes.

Campbell says true freshman J.J. Kohl could also get some snaps at quarterback.

Mistakes and turnovers have played a big role in the outcome over the years.

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says the Cyclones were impressive in a win over UNI.

Ferentz believes the offensive line will do a better job in the run game as the season progresses.

With Cade McNamara nursing an injured quad quarterback sneaks and bootlegs are not part of the package.

Iowa leads the all-time series 46-23.
