KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jamaal Charles, Eric Berry and Tony Moeaki have been waiting for this moment far too long. The trio of Kansas City Chiefs tore the ACLs in their left knees during a horrendous three-week stretch that started with last year’s preseason finale. So rather than practice with the rest of the team, they got together in the training room and slowly grinded their way back to health. Now, Charles is back toting the football, Berry is back at safety and Moeaki gives the Chiefs another pass-catching option at tight end for quarterback Matt Cassel. The three of them will finally be back for a game that counts Sunday against Atlanta.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — R.A. Dickey became the first pitcher in the majors to win 18 games this season, and Ike Davis hit a three-run homer to lift the New York Mets to a 6-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday. The knuckleballer allowed two runs in 6 2-3 innings en route to his 18th win, the first Mets pitcher to reach the mark since Frank Viola (20-12) and Dwight Gooden (19-7) both did it in 1990. Dickey (18-4) gave up eight hits and struck out five to help New York salvage a win to close out the three-game series. Davis gave the Mets a 5-1 lead with his 26th homer, and Daniel Murphy went 3-for-4 to lift his average in day games to an NL-best .351 (65 for 185). Josh Thole and Andres Torres had RBI singles, and Lucas Duda drove in the Mets’ other run with a bases-loaded walk. The Mets did most of their damage off of Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright (13-12), who allowed five runs and eight hits in five innings.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jaime Garcia carried a shutout into the eighth inning and Yadier Molina got his 1,000th career hit with an infield single that started a three-run second against rookie Matt Harvey in the St. Louis Cardinals’ 5-1 victory over the New York Mets on Tuesday night. Daniel Descalso and David Freese had two hits and an RBI apiece for the Cardinals, who are 42-26 at home for the second-best mark in the National League. St. Louis will go for a three-game sweep Wednesday with Adam Wainwright facing 17-game winner R.A. Dickey. Descalso also stole third in the sixth, putting him in position to score on John Jay’s groundout against Justin Hampson that made it 4-0.

St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter is taking another step in a bid to bolster the club’s NL wild card chances by throwing a simulated game. The 37-year-old right-hander, who underwent surgery to relieve nerve compression that resulted in numbness on much of the right side of his body in July, threw to hitters Tuesday before the Cardinals hosted the New York Mets. The Cardinals added another arm in their drive for an NL wild card wild spot, purchasing the contract of top pitching prospect Shelby Miller from Triple-A Memphis. The 21-year-old Miller was the Cardinals’ first-round pick in 2009 and had a big August, going 5-1 with a 2.89 ERA in six starts, after inconsistent performances much of the year in Memphis. St. Louis also recalled outfielder Adron Chambers and infielder Ryan Jackson from Memphis. The 25-year-old Chambers has played in 23 games for the Cardinals, batting .250 in 36 at-bats. The 24-year-old Jackson played in seven games last month in his first big-league action.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Nearly everyone assumed that Iowa would lean on senior quarterback James Vandenberg until the rest of the offense found its footing under new coordinator Greg Davis. But the Hawkeyes’ passing game is a major concern with Iowa State (1-0) visiting Kinnick Stadium on Saturday. Iowa (1-0) survived a fierce test from Northern Illinois last weekend, beating the Huskies 18-17 on running back Damon Bullock’s 23-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter. Vandenberg threw for just 129 yards — averaging less than four yards an attempt — and was sacked six times. Though Vandenberg completed 21 of his 33 tries, none of them went for scores.
