Padres 11, Cards 3 Monday

Sports

September 11th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Cameron Maybin hit a two-run homer, Will Venable had three RBIs and the San Diego Padres handed the struggling St. Louis Cardinals an 11-3 loss on Monday night. The loss dropped the Cardinals 9 1-2 games behind first-place Cincinnati in the NL Central. St. Louis, which has lost four of five, had its lead cut to one game over the idle Los Angeles Dodgers for the second NL wild-card berth. Maybin connected for his seventh homer off Jaime Garcia (4-7) that broke a 2-all tie in the fourth inning. Maybin had three hits and scored three runs. Chris Denorfia tied his career high with four hits and also had two RBIs. Logan Forsythe added three hits to tie his career high as San Diego matched its season best for runs and had 17 hits.

Lance Berkman is scheduled for season-ending surgery on his troublesome right knee Tuesday, leaving the St. Louis Cardinals without a dangerous bat as they try to secure a playoff spot. Cardinals manager Mike Matheny announced the news Monday before his team played the San Diego Padres. The defending World Series champions began the night with a 1½-game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the race for the second NL wild-card spot. Berkman, who had surgery on the same knee in May, traveled to Houston on Monday to meet with the medical team that performed the first operation. The same group of doctors will perform the surgery Tuesday (Today).

Secondary keys Iowa State defense

Sports

September 10th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State’s secondary is quickly easing any concerns that came from having two new starters. First-year starters Jansen Watson and Durrell Givens have combined with returning regulars Jeremy Reeves and Jacques Washington to form an aggressive unit that’s been a strength for the Cyclones (2-0). Iowa State has four interceptions in the first two games, and neither Tulsa nor Iowa completed 50 percent of its passes. Iowa State came up with late interceptions to secure both victories. The play of the secondary has been critical in a defense that’s giving up just 15 points a game and held Iowa without a touchdown in a 9-6 victory last Saturday. Iowa State hosts Western Illinois on Saturday.

ISU’s Jake Knott earns Big 12 honor

September 10th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa State senior linebacker Jake Knott has been named the Big 12’s Defensive Player of the Week for the second time in his career.  Knott had six tackles in Saturday’s 9-6 win at rival Iowa. Knott also made the game’s biggest play when he intercepted Iowa quarterback James Vandenberg with 1:11 left to seal Iowa State’s second straight win over the Hawkeyes.  Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein was tabbed the league’s offensive player of the week by a panel of media members who cover the conference.  Deante’ Gray of TCU was the Big 12’s top performer on special teams.

Cardinals RHP Westbrook to miss next start

Sports

September 10th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis right-hander Jake Westbrook will miss his next start due to a strained right oblique muscle. Westbrook was injured in the fifth inning of Saturday’s 6-3 loss to Milwaukee. Third baseman David Freese also was hurt during the game and was out of the lineup for Sunday’s series finale against the Brewers. Westbrook says he will not accompany the team on its upcoming seven-game road trip, which begins Monday in San Diego. He was scheduled to start on Thursday in Los Angeles. Westbrook received a cortisone shot. Freese twisted his left ankle in the sixth inning while trying to field a bunt attempt by Carlos Gomez. He remained in the game until the eighth. Freese says he expects to be ready on Monday.

Craig hits RBI single in 10th, Cards beat Brewers

Sports

September 9th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Allen Craig hit an RBI single with two outs in the 10th inning and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-4 Sunday to avoid a three-game sweep. The Brewers tied it in the ninth on Norichika Aoki’s two-out, two-run homer off closer Jason Motte. The two-strike drive barely cleared the right-field wall. Matt Carpenter singled with one out in the St. Louis 10th off Kameron Loe (6-5) and moved up on a wild pitch. Craig singled and Carpenter made a nifty slide to score. The Cardinals ended a three-game skid and held their slim lead for the second NL wild-card spot. Milwaukee, which has won 15 of 20, was trying to reach the .500 mark for the first time since April 24.

Ryan with 4 TDs as Falcons beat Chiefs 40-24

Sports

September 9th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Matt Ryan threw for 299 yards and three touchdowns, one of them to Tony Gonzalez in his return to Kansas City, and the Atlanta Falcons pounded the short-handed Chiefs 40-24 on Sunday.  Ryan also ran for a TD, while Julio Jones caught six passes for 108 yards and two scores.

The Falcons took advantage of a Chiefs defense missing four starters. Pro Bowl linebacker Tamba Hali was suspended for an unspecified violation of the league’s substance-abuse policy, and three others were injured.  Still, Kansas City matched Atlanta most of the first half, trailing 20-17 at the break. But a missed field goal by Ryan Succop early in the third quarter proved to be the turning point. Matt Cassel finished with 258 yards passing for Kansas City, but also threw two interceptions and lost a fumble. The Falcons turned all three turnovers into points.

Knott Seals Cy-Hawk Win for Cyclones

Sports

September 8th, 2012 by admin

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The Iowa Hawkeyes didn’t let Steele Jantz beat them like he did a year ago.

This time, it was the Cyclones’ defense that took down the rival Hawkeyes.

Steele Jantz threw for 241 yards and the game’s only touchdown on Saturday and Iowa State beat Iowa 9-6 for its first win in Iowa City in 10 years.

Jake Knott’s interception with 1:11 left sealed the win for the Cyclones (2-0), whose defense held Iowa to just 304 yards of offense.

Iowa State was held scoreless in the second half. But the Hawkeyes (1-1) could only muster a pair of short field goals in the lowest-scoring matchup between these in-state rivals in 24 years.

James Vandenberg was 20 of 42 passing for 236 yards and two interceptions for Iowa.

But after looking terrible all day, Iowa’s offense sprung to life in the final two minutes.

Fittingly, the game turned on its final mistake.

Vandenberg drove Iowa from its own 11 to Iowa State’s 32-yard line after throwing three straight incompletions. But he floated one over the middle and Knott tipped the ball and brought it in to give the Cyclones their first win in Iowa City since they beat the Hawkeyes 36-31 in 2002.

Vandenberg, who threw 25 TD passes in 2011, has none through two games this season. Iowa’s only points came on field goals of 23 and 21 yards from Mike Meyer.

Iowa State looked as though it was set to put away one of the ugliest games in this rivalry’s history late in the fourth quarter.

It would only get uglier from there.

Jantz drove the Cyclones to Iowa’s 2-yard line by converting on a pair of key third downs. But on third-and-goal with 3:23 left and Iowa State leading 9-6, Jantz threw an interception to Hawkeyes linebacker James Morris, who returned it to midfield.

Not surprisingly, Iowa did nothing with the pick.

Vandenberg misfired on four straight passes, the last incompletion coming when Don Shumpert dropped a pass that if completed would have been good for a first down.

Iowa’s receivers dropped plenty of passes, and Iowa State made a lot of mistakes as well. It’s just that the Hawkeyes couldn’t do much with those Cyclones’ miscues.

Jantz and James White muffed a handoff and Morris recovered at the Iowa State 21 midway through the third quarter. Vandenberg then connected with massive 6-foot-7 tight end C.J. Fiedorowicz on a pair of key completions to help get Iowa deep inside Cyclones territory.

But Keenan Davis was ruled out of bounds at the 3-yard line on what appeared to be a touchdown. Fullback Mark Weisman then dropped a potential TD catch, and Iowa’s Mike Meyer hit a 21-yard field goal to cut Iowa State’s lead to 9-6 with 14:06 left.

Jantz had four touchdowns in last season’s 44-41 triple-OT win over Iowa in Ames. He threw two interceptions on Saturday, but his defense picked up time and time again.

The win evened Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads’ overall record at 20-20.

Iowa State dominated the first half against an Iowa team that had outscored the Cyclones 52-12 in their last two appearances in Kinnick Stadium.

But the Cyclones could only muster a 9-3 lead at the break.

It felt like it should have been much bigger than that.

Jantz completed his first 10 passes, including a 5-yard TD pass to Aaron Horne on the game’s opening drive and a 40-yarder to Horne to put the Cyclones at Iowa’s 9-yard line. But Ernst Brun dropped a would-be TD pass and Iowa State was forced to settle for Edwin Arceo’s 22-yard field goal early in the second quarter.

Still, that lead would prove to be big enough to stand against Iowa’s woeful offense.

Through two games, the Hawkeyes have mustered just one touchdown and six Meyer field goals.
