Cardinals C Molina exits with lower back spasms

Sports

September 22nd, 2012 by Ric Hanson

CHICAGO (AP) – St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina left Saturday’s game because of lower back spasms after trying to avoid an inside pitch in the ninth inning.  The All-Star will be re-evaluated Sunday.  The Cardinals beat Chicago 5-4 in the 10th and extended their lead for the second NL wild-card spot.   “I’m not concerned,” Molina said. “I’m a little worried because any time it’s your back, it’s better to take one or two days off and finish strong.”

Molina turned to his left to avoid the pitch from Carlos Marmol and fell to the ground, clutching his side. Molina is hitting .319 with 20 home runs and 70 RBIs.  “It just tightened up on him,” Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. “Trying to react at max speed doesn’t help, either. Trainers were encouraged, thought it’s something we’ll be able to take a look at in the morning and adjust from there.”

Jay’s RBI double in 10th lifts Cardinals over Cubs

CHICAGO (AP) – John Jay’s RBI double in the 10th inning lifted St. Louis over the Chicago Cubs 5-4 on Saturday, bolstering the Cardinals’ bid for another playoff appearance.  Carlos Beltran hit a tying solo homer in the ninth for the Cardinals, who began the day with a two-game lead over Los Angeles for the second NL wild-card spot. Milwaukee dropped 2 1/2 games behind. The defending World Series champion Cardinals have 10 games left in the regular season.  After Matt Carpenter and Brian Anderson drew two-out walks from Jaye Champan (0-1), Jay doubled down the right-field line.  Mitchell Boggs (4-1) got one out in the ninth. Jason Motte struck out the side in the 10th for his 39th save.  Beltran made it 4-all with his 30th homer, a one-out shot off Carlos Marmol.

Drake rallies to beat Morehead State 28-25

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Mike Piatkowski threw three touchdown passes, Gary Scott ran for 119 yards and a score, and a late interception helped Drake rally Saturday to beat Morehead State 28-25 in the Pioneer League opener for both teams. Piatkowski, who was 29 of 41 for 268 yards, hit Joey Orlando on a 9-yard score in the second quarter. In the fourth, he found J.T. Teague and Nick Rosa for 16-yard touchdowns before Scott’s 14-yard scoring run put the Bulldogs (2-2) up 28-17.

Rees MacShara’s 4-yard run and a successful two-point conversion pulled the Eagles (1-3) within three, and Morehead State got the ball back with less than 2 minutes left. But Zach Lewis, who earlier threw a 26-yard touchdown to Donte Sawyer, was intercepted by Tyler Moorehead and the Bulldogs ran out the clock. MacShara led all rushers with 132 yards, and Brandon Bornhauser had a 27-yard scoring run for the Eagles.

Central Michigan stuns Iowa 32-31

Sports

September 22nd, 2012 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Central Michigan’s David Harman drilled a 47-yard field goal with three seconds left, and the Chippewas scored nine points in the final 45 seconds and stunned Iowa 32-31 on Saturday.  Central Michigan (2-1) pulled within 31-29 on Ryan Radcliff’s 13-yard TD throw to Titus Davis. The Chippewas failed on the two-point conversion, but they recovered an onside kick and moved to Iowa’s 30-yard line in part because of a personal foul on the Hawkeyes (2-2).

Harman had the wind at his back on the winning kick, which handed Iowa one of its most improbable defeats in 14 years under coach Kirk Ferentz.  Mark Weisman ran for 217 yards and three touchdowns in a losing effort for Iowa.

September 21st, 2012 by Ric Hanson

CHICAGO (AP) — Darwin Barney spoiled Chris Carpenter’s season debut with a two-run, game-tying homer with two outs in the ninth inning, and David DeJesus hit a game-ending single in the 11th to help the Chicago Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-4 on Friday. DeJesus hit an 0-2 pitch off of Joe Kelly (5-6) to right field to score pinch-runner Brett Jackson. Alberto Cabrera (0-1) struck out two in a perfect 11th to earn his first career victory. Carpenter allowed two runs over five innings and was in line for the win before Barney’s late home run. The Cardinals entered Friday with a 2 1-2 game lead over the Milwaukee Brewers for the second wild card spot.
