A person with knowledge of the trade tells The Associated Press that the Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to acquire quarterback Alex Smith from San Francisco. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the trade does not become official until March 12, when the NFL’s new business year begins.
It’s the first big player move by Kansas City since Andy Reid took over as coach after being fired by Philadelphia. Fox Sports first reported the deal.
Smith lost his starting job to Colin Kaepernick after sustaining a concussion Nov. 11. Kaepernick played well, and coach Jim Harbaugh stuck with him even when Smith was healthy. Kaepernick led the 49ers to the NFC championship and a close loss to Baltimore in the Super Bowl.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Drake has suspended two reserves for breaking basketball team rules.
Head coach Mark Phelps said Tuesday that senior Matt Bowie and freshman Kori Babineaux are suspended indefinitely. He didn’t say what rules they violated.
Bowie and Babineaux won’t travel with the team or participate in Wednesday game at Indiana State in Terre Haute.
Babineaux has played in 18 games but has never started this season. Bowie has played in three games.
Eighth-ranked Harlan began the Class 4A tournament with a come-from-behind victory over No. 3 Benton in a game that featured strong play on both sides.
Elle Kloewer scored 11 points and came up with three steals late in the game as the Cyclones won 52-42 to advance to the semifinals. Liz Riessen and 6-foot-1 sophomore Jess Schaben added 10 points for Harlan and Josie Esser scored nine.
Riessen grabbed eight rebounds, while Schaben, who has a promising career in both basketball and volleyball, pulled down six rebounds and made two steals.
Northern Iowa recruit Madison Weekly scored 11 points in her final game for Benton, adding five assists and five rebounds.
With crisp passing that led to layups or open jump shots, Benton scored the final 12 points of the first quarter to erase a 9-2 Harlan lead. The Bobcats stretched their lead to 18-12 before Harlan came back.
Riessen’s 3-pointer just ahead of the halftime buzzer tied the game at 22. Kloewer, a 5-8 sophomore, then showed her versatility at the start of the second half, posting up for a basket and knocking down a 3-pointer to put the Cyclones ahead 27-22. They led from then on but had to fight off the Bobcats almost the entire way to the end.
Benton drew to 41-40 on Sara Petrzelka’s two free throws with 3:42 left, but the Bobcats didn’t score again until 23.1 seconds remained and Harlan wrapped up the victory by making 11 of 14 free throws. Kloewer stymied Benton and created opportunities for her teammates by stealing the ball three times in the final 2:48.
Harlan, in the tournament for the 10th time, advances to a semifinal at 6:45 Thursday night with a 22-2 record. Benton finishes 21-3.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Drake Relays is moving under the lights. Meet officials announced Tuesday that a number of invitational races and field events will be staged on a Friday night rather than its traditional Saturday afternoon setup. Drake organizers previously announced in November that the 104th annual meet, set for April 24-28, will offer more than $500,000 in prize money in 2013 for a series of rematches from the London Olympics.
Meet organizers say they’ll offer a $50,000 purse for invitational races and $25,000 for field events — each the biggest such prize in the U.S. — after landing a new title sponsor, supermarket chain Hy-Vee. Drake also says 22 medalists from the recent London Olympics have committed to the meet so far.
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Big Ten has approved the request from Nebraska and Iowa to move their 2013 football game to the day after Thanksgiving in Lincoln, Neb. Nebraska and Iowa met on the day after Thanksgiving in both 2011 and 2012, Nebraska’s first two years in the Big Ten. The 2013 game will mark the 24th straight season Nebraska has played on the day after Thanksgiving.
Approval came from the league’s Conference Administrators Council. Time and television information for the Nov. 29 game will be announced later. The original Big Ten schedule had the teams playing the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
DALLAS (AP) — The Big 12 says officiating errors were made at the end of regulation before No. 6 Kansas outlasted Iowa State in overtime on Monday night. The league said Tuesday that “appropriate measures will be taken” against the two officials involved, including an adjustment of “the number of future assignments.” The Big 12 did not identify the officials or the plays in question.
Kansas’s Elijah Johnson drove into the lane and got tangled up with Iowa State’s Georges Niang with less than 10 seconds left. No foul was called, and Niang was then whistled for fouling Johnson on the floor. Johnson sank two free throws to force OT with 4.9 seconds left. Kansas won the game 108-96.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says it will host public meetings over the Iowa Communications Network on March 7th from 6- to 9- p.m., to listen to the public’s thoughts on the hunting and trapping regulations for this fall. The meetings are part of the new process instituted for making rules in state government. Dr. Dale Garner, chief of the wildlife bureau, says “Any rule changes must be discussed with Iowa’s citizens who might be impacted by the changes before the rule changes are proposed. The new process helps ensure that rule changes serve the public’s wishes and do not impact Iowa’s economy.”
At each meeting DNR staff will facilitate a discussion about what went well last fall, what didn’t, and what changes hunters and trappers would like to see for this fall. The discussions along with the data that the wildlife bureau collects on harvest and population numbers will be used to develop recommendations for any rule changes this fall. Any changes must be approved by the Natural Resource Commission and then go back to the public for further comment before taking effect next fall.
