Beltran, Freese hit 2-run HRs, Cards beat Giants

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Carlos Beltran and David Freese each hit two-run homers and the St. Louis Cardinals held on to beat the San Francisco Giants 6-4 Sunday night in Game 1 of the NL championship series. The wild-card Cardinals took an early 6-0 lead and made it stand up. Two days earlier, St. Louis overcame a 6-0 deficit to beat Washington in the deciding Game 5 of the division series. After starter Lance Lynn struggled, the St. Louis bullpen delivered with 5 1-3 scoreless innings. The Giants dropped to 0-3 at home so far during this postseason, outscored 20-6 at AT&T Park. Game 2 in the best-of-seven series is Monday night. Chris Carpenter pitches for the Cardinals against Ryan Vogelsong.

Buccaneers shut down Quinn-led Chiefs 38-10

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) – Josh Freeman threw for 328 yards and three touchdowns and Ronde Barber scored on a 78-yard interception return to help the Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the struggling Kansas City Chiefs 38-10 on Sunday.  Freeman’s inconsistency has been an issue in a slow start for Tampa Bay, but the fourth-year pro is developing a touch on deep passes that’s sparked a sputtering offense over the past two games.

Freeman teamed with Mike Williams on a 62-yard scoring play in the first quarter and threw TD passes of 19 and 17 yards to Vincent Jackson in the second half as the Bucs (2-3) stopped a three-game losing streak.  The Bucs intercepted Brady Quinn twice in the Kansas City quarterback’s first start in nearly three years. They also limited NFL rushing leader Jamaal Charles to 40 yards on 12 carries.

Cardinals, Giants each pulled off remarkable rally

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – St. Louis manager Mike Matheny will watch the game again, once things slow down, so he can truly appreciate just what his Cardinals pulled off in Washington to return to the NL championship series.  San Francisco skipper Bruce Bochy doesn’t need another look to know how impressive the reigning World Series champions’ ninth-inning comeback was.

The Cardinals erased a six-run deficit and rallied to win 9-7 in the nation’s capital on Friday night.  Bochy’s team had its own remarkable rally: Three road wins at Cincinnati to advance after dropping the first two games of the division series at home to the Reds.

The last two World Series winners sure are showing their championship mettle in mid-October. They face off in Game 1 of the NLCS on Sunday night at San Francisco’s AT&T Park.

Southern Illinois edges Northern Iowa 34-31

CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) – Austin Johnson kicked a 24-yard field goal with 59 seconds to play and Southern Illinois rallied to beat Northern Iowa 34-31 on Saturday.  The Salukis (4-3, 3-1 MVC) trailed 21-6 in the second quarter when Kenn Boatright blocked a UNI punt and recovered it in the end zone for a touchdown. The Panthers (1-5, 0-3) were driving for a touchdown late in the half when SIU’s Bryan Presume picked up the ball at the goal line and ran 100 yards for a touchdown. A 2-point conversion tied it at 21.

Southern Illinois took a 31-21 lead thanks in part to Kory Faulkner’s 21-yard scoring pass to MyCole Pruitt, but Northern Iowa tied it at 31 before Johnson’s winning kick. David Johnson ran for 118 yards and two touchdowns for the Panthers. Faulkner ran for a 49-yard touchdown for SIU.

VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) – Mike Ratelle returned a kickoff for a touchdown, helping Drake beat winless Valparaiso 35-21 on Saturday afternoon. Adding to the score, Mike Piatkowski threw for one touchdown – a 10-yard pass to T.J. James – and 1 yard for another. Piatkowski was 22 of 36 for 327 yards. AMES, Iowa (AP) — Quarterback Collin Klein ran for 105 yards and three touchdowns and sixth-ranked Kansas State held off Iowa State 27-21 for its fifth straight win over the Cyclones. Klein also threw for 187 yards for the Wildcats (6-0, 3-0 Big 12), who remain unbeaten heading into next week’s showdown with West Virginia. Kansas State held the Cyclones (4-2, 1-2) to just 231 yards of offense. Iowa State still had a chance for the game-winning drive from its own 3-yard line with 2:17 left, but the Wildcats stopped the Cyclones on downs. The Wildcats held the ball for nearly 41 minutes and converted eight of 17 third downs. Jared Barnett threw for 166 yards and two TDs for Iowa State.

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Mark Weisman ran for 116 yards and a tying touchdown in the final minute of regulation, and Iowa went on to beat Michigan State 19-16 in double overtime Saturday. Mike Meyer kicked field goals in both overtimes, including a 42-yarder in the second that gave the Hawkeyes (4-2, 2-0 Big Ten) their first lead of the game. Iowa then won it when Andrew Maxwell’s deflected pass was intercepted by Greg Castillo. Le’Veon Bell ran for 140 yards and a touchdown for Michigan State, but the Spartans (4-3, 1-2) couldn’t hold on late. Iowa drove 68 yards in nine plays and tied it at 13 on Weisman’s 5-yard scoring run with 55 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

Cards score 4 in 9th, beat Nats 9-7, reach NLCS

WASHINGTON (AP) — Doesn’t matter how bad things look for the St. Louis Cardinals. Trailing by a bunch, down to their last strike, they simply stay calm and do what it takes to win. Erasing an early six-run hole in Game 5 slowly but surely, the defending World Series champion Cardinals got a tying two-out, two-run single from Daniel Descalso and a go-ahead two-run single from Pete Kozma in the ninth inning and came all the way back to beat the Washington Nationals 9-7 Friday night and win their NL division series. It was the largest comeback ever in a winner-take-all postseason game, according to STATS LLC. No other club in this sort of ultimate pressure situation had come back from more than four down.

Spartans hoping for faster start against Iowa

Sports

October 12th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — When Michigan State beat Iowa last season, the Spartans led 31-7 at halftime. That kind of fast start has been nowhere to be found lately. Michigan State hasn’t led after two quarters in more than a month. The Spartans (4-2, 1-1 Big Ten) will try to reverse that trend Saturday when they host the Hawkeyes (3-2, 1-0) in a crucial matchup in the Big Ten’s Legends Division. Iowa is one of two teams in the division that hasn’t dripped a conference game yet. Michigan State rallied from an early deficit to beat Indiana last weekend, but it was a struggle. The Spartans began the season with Rose Bowl aspirations, but it’s still hard to get a sense of where they stand in a jumbled league race that’s still taking shape.
