Cardinals release RHP Kyle McClellan

Sports

November 14th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have released veteran reliever Kyle McClellan, a St. Louis County native who spent five seasons with the team. McClellan appeared in just 16 games in 2012 because of elbow and shoulder problems. He was 0-1 with a 5.30 ERA. The Cardinals also announced Tuesday the signing of catcher Rob Johnson to a minor league contract. Johnson is a career .201 hitter. He hit .250 in 17 games with the Mets in 2012.

McClellan is 19-23 with a 3.69 ERA in the majors. The right-hander started 17 games in 2011, when he was 12-7 with a 4.19 ERA. But arm fatigue set in late that season and he pitched just one-third of an inning during the postseason run en route to the World Series title.

Discipline issues contributing to Chiefs losses

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel says he plans to speak to his team about discipline issues that cropped up during Monday night’s loss at Pittsburgh, including an instance in which Kansas City was flagged for a group celebration. Crennel says he isn’t sure where the celebrations came from, but acknowledged that “with the record we have, they can’t afford to be dancing.” The overtime loss to Pittsburgh dropped Kansas City to 1-8.

Crennel said wide receiver Jon Baldwin will be evaluated for a head and neck injury on Wednesday. Defensive tackle Dontari Poe has a knee injury, and offensive guard Jon Asamoah has a hand injury that the Chiefs will monitor. Crennel also says he hasn’t decided on a starting quarterback for next week’s game against Cincinnati because Brady Quinn hasn’t been cleared to play following his concussion.

Ferentz keeps focus squarely on Michigan

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa isn’t giving up on Kirk Ferentz despite a third straight season of diminishing results. The Hawkeyes simply have to hope that the well-respected coach who has twice revived the program has another turnaround in him. Iowa (4-6, 2-4 Big Ten) is on course for its worst season since 2000, when it went 3-9.

The Hawkeyes have lost four games in a row and will need to beat Michigan and Nebraska to qualify for a bowl game. Ferentz says the key for the Hawkeyes is to simply focus on Saturday’s game at Michigan (7-3, 5-1).

Ferentz: Ex-UI official no longer worked with team

Sports

November 13th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz says an athletics department official who resigned after being accused of sexually harassing athletes had stopped working with his players. Ferentz told reporters on Tuesday that Peter Gray worked with the football team in the past, “but it’s been awhile. A significant while.” He did not elaborate on when Gray stopped counseling his players or why that came about. Gray resigned last week after a decade at the athletics department, where he was in charge of monitoring the academic progression of all student-athletes.

An internal report released to the Iowa City Press-Citizen found that Gray violated the university’s sexual harassment policy through improper behavior that included rubbing, massaging and hugging students. UI President Sally Mason said Tuesday she’s launched a review of the matter.

Chiefs place DE Dorsey on injured reserve

Sports

November 13th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have placed defensive end Glenn Dorsey on injured reserve with a calf injury and added defensive back Neiko Thorpe to the 53-man roster. Dorsey played in just four games this season. He injured his left calf in practice in September and missed four games, then injured his right calf during a 31-13 loss to the Chargers on Nov. 1. The former first-round draft pick finishes the season with seven tackles and no sacks.

Thorpe made the Chiefs this summer after signing with the club as an undrafted rookie free agent. He played on special teams during a 9-6 loss to the Ravens last month, and was on the practice squad when he was promoted before Kansas City faced the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday night.

Roethlisberger hurt, Steelers survive Chiefs 16-13

Sports

November 13th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers escaped with a victory. The health of their franchise quarterback is another matter entirely. The Steelers edged the woeful Kansas City Chiefs 16-13 in overtime on Monday night but lost Ben Roethlisberger for most of the second half — and perhaps a lot longer — with a right shoulder injury. Roethlisberger left the game early in the third quarter after getting slammed to the turf by Kansas City linebackers Tamba Hali and Justin Houston and did not return.

The Steelers (6-3) won their fourth straight anyway. Shaun Suisham kicked a 23-yard field goal 51 seconds into the extra period, one play after Lawrence Timmons intercepted Kansas City’s Matt Cassel and returned to the 5. Jamaal Charles ran for 100 yards and a score for the Chiefs (1-8), who have lost six straight.

Iowa State blasts Alabama A&M 98-40

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Tyrus McGee led five Cyclones in double figures with 18 points and Iowa State blasted overmatched Alabama A&M 98-40 on Monday night. Freshman Georges Niang had 17 points and Melvin Ejim added 16 for the Cyclones (2-0), who opened the game on a 35-10 run and recorded their sixth-largest margin of victory in school history. Iowa State held Alabama A&M (1-1) to just 14 first-half points in building a 27-point lead. The Cyclones led by as many as 58 points and won their ninth straight at home dating back to last season. Jeremy Crutcher had 10 for the Bulldogs, but he was their only player in double figures.
