CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Paul Brown ran for one touchdown and passed for another and Spirit Lake survived five turnovers to beat Mediapolis 17-15 on Friday and win the Class 2A state championship. Brown’s 3-yard TD run gave the Indians (13-1) a 17-7 lead late in the third quarter and they held on against a Mediapolis team playing without star quarterback Jesse Ertz, a Kansas State recruit who was sidelined by a knee injury. Trailing 17-13, Mediapolis (13-1) got the ball on Blake Beckman’s fumble recovery at the Spirit Lake 36 with 2:14 remaining. But Drew Foster, who filled in for Ertz, was intercepted by Tyler Peterson on the next play and Spirit Lake ran out the clock, taking a safety as time expired in Cedar Falls.

St. Louis Cardinals New Uniforms

The St. Louis Cardinals today unveiled new uniforms for the 2013 season, the first update to the teams’ wardrobe in more than a decade. For the first time in more than 80 years, the team will wear an alternate uniform on Saturdays that will feature “St. Louis” in place of “Cardinals” on the jersey.

“We are excited about the new uniforms,” said Cardinals President Bill DeWitt III, who led the design efforts. “We think the design improvements will be popular with both players and fans — particularly the addition of the alternate jersey on home Saturdays.”

The Cardinals will be the 27th team in MLB to add an alternate jersey to their lineup and the fourth to use off-white. The home alternate jersey will be worn on home Saturdays and will feature “St. Louis” in place of “Cardinals” under the iconic birds on the bat. The jersey and matching pants feature an off-white color, red piping, and the player number on the front.  All the team’s jerseys (home, road, home alternate) will feature more detail in the embroidery, consistent with the graphical logo used by the club since 1998. The richer detail is made possible by advances in the manufacturing process. In addition to being one of the most
recognized logos in baseball, the iconic Cardinals Birds on Bat logo is one of the highest quality logos in MLB. It is produced using chenille stitching directly embroidered onto the jersey, a more painstaking method than the traditional twill patch application used by other teams.  It takes over an hour to stitch each individual jersey, with nearly 40,000 stitches required for the home and road jerseys. Majestic uses the latest embroidery technology and most talented sewing staff at their Pennsylvania facility to produce the uniforms.

With the 2013 jerseys, fans will notice much more detail in the birds. Additional changes include a slight modification to the size of the numbers on the front of the jersey (dropping from 4 inches to 3 ½”). All jerseys are available in both the traditional double knit and the Cool Base, a lightweight moisture wicking performance fabric that is popular with players. In addition to the jersey changes, the team will wear red caps with their road uniforms, while the blue cap will remain a road alternate. The team will also wear a new batting practice cap this season.  Fans may purchase the 2013 authentic jerseys at the Cardinals Official Team Store at Busch Stadium exclusively through Thanksgiving and at other local outlets thereafter. While supplies last, the Cardinals Official Team Store at Busch Stadium is offering a free set of pint glasses featuring the new St. Louis logo with the purchase of the 2013 home alternate jersey. The store is also offering, for a fee, on-site jersey customization to accommodate holiday shoppers looking for a unique personalized gift. The team store is open 10 AM – 6 PM seven days a week, except holidays. The store will have extended hours on Black Friday (8AM – 6PM) and will have a number of Black Friday Specials.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Michigan defensive tackle Will Campbell wishes he was wrapping up a fourth season with coach Brady Hoke.

Two years, though, have been better than none for Campbell.

He came to campus during the Rich Rodriguez era and is finishing up under Hoke. Campbell and the other fourth-year players were one game under .500 during their first two seasons and have a combined 18-5 record this year and last.

The 23rd-ranked Wolverines (7-3, 5-1 Big Ten) hope to 23 seniors out with a win against Iowa (4-6, 2-4) in their home finale Saturday.

After losing four straight, Iowa needs to beat Michigan and then Nebraska to qualify for a bowl.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — University of Iowa President Sally Mason is apologizing for the school’s failure to protect athletes and employees in its handling of a former athletics department official accused of sexual harassment.

Mason said in a statement Friday that the university will make changes to avoid a repeat of what she called an “isolated breakdown” in the case of Peter Gray, who resigned last week after working as associate director of athletics student services since 2002.

The Iowa City Press-Citizen published an internal report that accused Gray of violating the school’s sexual harassment policy through improper touching that included shoulder massages, hugging and rubbing. The report says the behavior dated back to Gray’s earlier employment at Iowa in the 1990s and continued despite complaints from colleagues, coaches and at least one athlete.
