The Atlantic School Board Monday, heard a report from High School Assistant Prinicipal/Activities Director Josh Rasmussen, with regard to the condition of the district’s athletic facilities. Rasmussen showed the board pictures of conditions at the Trojan Bowl, Baseball Field, Softball Field, Middle School and Schuler Gyms, the Middle School practice field and wrestling/multi-purpose room.

Superintendent Dr. Michael Amstein asked Rasmussen to take pictures of the areas district administrators and others have noticed are in need of repair or renovation. Rasmussen said at the Trojan Bowl, some of the issues brought up include: No restrooms for visitors except portable-style facilities, and the need to expand current restrooms; the need for a bigger concessions stand away from the exit and entrance; need for additional storage space, and no handicapped accessibility to the bleachers.

Rasmussen also talked about the baseball and softball fields. He said there is no ticket booth, the field is not level, there is no handicapped accessibility, which is something that must be addressed. Others concerns with both fields, include: No permanent bleachers; parking issues; drainage issues at the softball field; and safety improvements to the dugouts. As for the Middle School Gym, Rasmussen says the bleacher need to be replaced for safety reasons, new scoreboard are needed because the current boards are becoming obsolete, and the weightlifting area needs to be updated and equipment replaced.

New scoreboards are needed in the Schuler gym, along with new bleachers and an activity divider curtain. And, Rasmussen says in the Wrestling/Multi-Purpose room, there should be an enclosed breezeway connecting the room to the main building, an expansion of the multi-purpose room to include a locker room, and the addition of more storage space.

The school board agreed the next step would be to make “Requests for Proposals” (RFP’s), so experts can come in and offer an assessment of the situation, offer solutions to any problems with the athletic facilities, real or perceived, and what the costs might be.

The Technology Coordinator at the Atlantic High School received a sports award this past weekend. Atlantic School District Superintendent Dr. Michael Amstein made the announcement during Monday night’s meeting of the Atlantic Board of Education. He said Roger Warne received the Iowa Boys Assistant Track and Field Coach of the Year Award from the Iowa Track Association. Amstein said the award was well deserved and he appreciates the work he does with students as well.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe will miss next weekend’s game at Oakland with a rib injury, and coach Romeo Crennel said Monday that it’s possible Kansas City’s leading receiver could be out the rest of the year. Bowe went to the locker room after the first quarter of Sunday’s loss in Cleveland with what the team announced as a rib issue. He didn’t return. Bowe, who is playing this season on a $9.5 million contract after getting franchised by the Chiefs, is once again leading the team in receptions. He has 59 catches for 801 yards and three touchdowns.

Crennel said safeties Abe Elam (quadriceps) and Kendrick Lewis (shoulder), left tackle Branden Albert (back) and running back Cyrus Gray (neck) will receive treatment before deciding whether they can play Oakland .

The Iowa Dept. of Natural Resources says two men have been charged following an incident that occurred Saturday afternoon in Harrison County, when a shotgun slug was fired into an occupied home while deer hunting. 64-year old Stephen Kenkel, of Grinnell was charged with one count of shooting over a roadway and one count of shooting within 200 yards of an inhabited building. 52-year old Gail C. Lamberson, of Logan was charged with one count of shooting within 200 yards of an inhabited building.

The incident occurred when deer were crossing the roadway between Kenkel and the house and Kenkel shot at the deer. The shot went through a wall eventually lodged in a ceiling inside the house. The house was occupied at the time, but no one was injured.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Former Iowa defensive back Micah Hyde plans to fight the disorderly conduct ticket he received over the weekend and a public intoxication charge he received in October.  Hyde’s lawyer, Cathy Cartee, said Monday that Hyde did nothing wrong when police responded to a loud party in his apartment building early Sunday, but she hasn’t seen the complaint yet.

Cartee says Hyde also denies being intoxicated during the October incident. But Hyde pleaded guilty to interfering with police and was ordered to pay nearly $400.  Hyde is scheduled for two trials in January. The public intoxication case will be heard on Jan. 22, and the disorderly conduct charge will be heard on Jan. 24.

Hyde started 38 games for the Hawkeyes before his career ended last month.
