JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Adam Wainwright limited Washington to one run in six strong innings and Matt Adams hit a three-run homer in the St. Louis Cardinals’ 5-1 exhibition victory over the Nationals on Friday. Facing mostly Washington backups, Wainwright took a shutout into the sixth inning and allowed only three hits in his second consecutive impressive start. Jon Jay and Adams homered in a four-run first inning for the Cardinals. Nationals starter Dan Haren rebounded after that, allowing one earned run and two hits in the next four innings.

Haren, the right-hander who signed a one-year deal with the Nationals in the offseason, gave up five earned runs and six hits in five innings. He has a 5.79 ERA in four spring starts. Wainwright had a rough start against the Nationals on March 2, but noticed he wasn’t striding far enough toward home plate when a fan gave him a picture to sign as he left the parking lot. The right-hander extended his stride about 6 inches and has regained his form in the past two outings.

The opening day starter has a 2.76 ERA in four spring starts. Former pitcher Micah Owings went 2 for 2 as a left fielder for the Nationals. He’s hitting .429.

CHICAGO (AP) — Adreian Payne had 18 points and 10 rebounds, leading 8th ranked Michigan State to a rugged 59-56 victory over Iowa in the Big Ten quarterfinals on Friday night. Keith Appling and Gary Harris had 13 points apiece for the Spartans (25-7), who trailed by 12 midway through the second half. They advance to play Ohio State in the next round in a rematch of last season’s tournament championship, won by Michigan State.

Iowa (21-12) was oh so close to an upset victory that could have cemented a spot in the field for next week’s NCAA tournament. Instead, the Hawkeyes will have to sweat out a nervous Selection Sunday. Mike Gesell led the way with nine points for the Hawkeyes, who failed to have any players score in double figures in Chicago.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Perry Ellis scored a career-high 23 points, and seventh-ranked Kansas pulled away in the second half to beat Iowa State 88-73 on Friday night and reach the Big 12 tournament title game. Jeff Withey and Elijah Johnson added 14 points each, and Ben McLemore finished with 10 for the top-seeded Jayhawks (28-5), who advanced to play No. 11 Kansas State or No. 14 Oklahoma State on Saturday night for its sixth Big 12 tournament championship.

Georges Niang scored 19 points and Melvin Ejim had 17 for the fifth-seeded Cyclones (22-11), who were trying to turn the tables after losing to the Jayhawks twice in overtime this season. Instead, Kansas won for the 16th time in their last 17 meetings. Ellis was a big reason why.

Bluder believes Hawks will go dancing.

Iowa womens basketball coach Lisa Bluder believes the Hawkeyes will be one of the teams selected on Monday night for the NCAA Tournament. The Hawkeyes finished the season with a record of 20-12. She said “With a 37 RPI, and we play in the second toughest conference in America, we’ve got good quality wins, so I feel like….we’re in.”

Bluder says this year’s team has had great leadership and she hopes they get a chance to finish in the NCAA Tournament. She says “Our Captains…Jaime, Trisha and Morgan, were voted on by the players. So obviously the players had the respect for those three. But I think those three didn’t just take the title and sit on it. They took the title and tried to learn how to be better Captains. They embraced the role…wanted to be good Captains….wanted this team to be successful because they knew it was going to be their legacy, their Senior leadership, their Captain role that was going top be tagged to the season. So I think they were always determined to always do a good job with that.”

Bluder says she would like to see the Big Ten women’s tournament move to same weekend as the men. The women played thir tournament last week in Chicago. The men’s tournament is this week. Iowa could play at home in the tournament. Carver-Hawkeye Arena will host the first two round beginning March 24th.

Chiefs add veteran OL Schwartz in free agency

Sports

March 15th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs signed veteran offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz on Friday in an attempt to bolster their depth. Schwartz, who can play both guard and tackle, started 16 games for Carolina in 2010, but missed the following season with a hip injury. He spent last season as a backup in Minnesota.

The former seventh-round pick could compete with Donald Stephenson for the job at right tackle, which came open when the Chiefs released Eric Winston. But Schwartz admitted he’s more adept at guard, where he could compete with Jon Asamoah and Jeff Allen for playing time.

Schwartz said on a conference call with reporters that he’s been told by the Chiefs there will be open competition, and that “the best five will roll.”

Chiefs’ Reid Big Reason for Free-Agent Flood

Sports

March 15th, 2013 by Jim Field

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have been active players in free agency, already luring more than a half dozen players in an effort to overhaul their roster.

One of the big reasons for their arrival has been new coach Andy Reid.

The longtime coach of the Eagles was fired after 14 seasons, and Chiefs owner Clark Hunt made the quick and decisive move to hire him as a replacement for Romeo Crennel.

He earned a reputation as a “player’s coach” with the Eagles, and that appears to have carried over to Kansas City. Newcomers such as tight end Anthony Fasano, wide receiver Donnie Avery and quarterback Chase Daniel said Reid played a part in their signing with the Chiefs.

Daniel called him “one of the best offensive minds, in my opinion.”

Iowa tops Northwestern 73-59 in B10 tournament

Sports

March 15th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

CHICAGO (AP) — Devyn Marble scored 19 points to help Iowa hold on for an important 73-59 victory over Northwestern in the first round of the Big Ten tournament on Thursday night. Mike Gesell added 11 points, including a clinching three-point play with 1:41 left as the Hawkeyes (21-11) continued their late-season push for a spot in the NCAA tournament with their eighth victory in 10 games.

Reggie Hearn powered a late Northwestern’s rally after an awful start, scoring 14 of his 19 points in the second half. He drove inside to trim Iowa’s lead to 50-43 with 8:27 left, but Marble and Gesell each hit a big 3-pointer to help the Hawkeyes hold on for their third consecutive victory.

Melsahn Basabe had 10 points and 12 rebounds for Iowa, which shot just 37.1 percent but enjoyed a 48-31 advantage on the boards. Alex Olah scored 12 points for Northwestern (13-19) and Tre Demps finished with 11.

Chiefs agree to terms with CB Sean Smith

Sports

March 15th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to terms with cornerback Sean Smith on a three-year deal to help shore up the secondary. Smith has spent the past four seasons with the Miami Dolphins, starting every game each of the past two years. He has 177 tackles and five interceptions in his career.

The Chiefs have been bold players in free agency under new general manager John Dorsey and coach Andy Reid, revamping their offense by trading for quarterback Alex Smith and signing wide receiver Donnie Avery, tight end Anthony Fasano and backup quarterback Alex Smith.

They’ve also signed defensive tackle Mike DeVito and veteran cornerback Dunta Robinson, who is expected to provide depth. But the addition of Smith solidifies the cornerback spot opposite Brandon Flowers.
