Iowa State got a much needed win to open Big-12 play. T.J. Tampa’s interception sealed the game as the Cyclones held off a late rally by Oklahoma State for a 34-27 win. The Cyclones won despite rushing for only 74 yards.

ISU coach Matt Campbell. Cyclone quarterback Rocco Becht was 27 of 38 for 348 yards and three touchdowns.

Campbell says Becht’s confidence is growing.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa women’s soccer tied Minnesota in a scoreless match on Sunday at the Iowa Soccer Complex.

Both teams had scoring opportunities; the Gophers finished with 12 shots and five shots on goal with Iowa close behind at 10 shots and three shots on goal for the contest.

Minnesota outshot Iowa, 6-2, in the first period before Iowa applied pressure in the second half, finishing with an 8-6 edge in shots taken during the final 45 minutes.

Hawkeye goalkeeper Macy Enneking matched a season-best five saves en route to the seventh clean sheet that the Iowa defense has posted this season. Enneking’s 16 career shutouts stand alone at third in the Iowa record book, following Sunday’s match.

“I think [the draw] is an indication of how much parity there is in college soccer, and that starts in the Big Ten. The margin for error is really small and everyone is coached really well. Everyone comes in really well-prepared tactically, and today was no different…

The parity of the game is so close right now that it comes down to a missed assignment or not winning a second ball. That is really what I thought we did a good job of in the second half. We lost a lot of second balls in the first half. I thought we did a much better job in the second half. Really, that game was probably an appropriate score. They had the first half, and we had a bit of an advantage in the second half.”

CORALVILLE, Iowa — University of Iowa volleyball fell to Ohio State, 3-0, Sunday afternoon inside Xtream Arena in Coralville, Iowa.

Senior Delaney McSweeney led the way for the Hawkeyes, posting 11 kills and a .407 hitting percentage. Redshirt junior Anna Davis hit at a clip of .445 against the Buckeyes. Sophomore Nataly Moravec recorded a career-high three service aces. Setters Bailey Ortega and Kaia Mateo registered 15 assists a piece.

Set 1 (Ohio State, 25-22): Iowa secured the first point of the match thanks to an ace by Moravec. Ohio State went on an offensive run early, but Michelle Urquhart posted a kill to put the ball back into the Hawkeye’s hands. Iowa kept climbing to meet the Buckeyes at a score of 7-7, after a solo block by Davis and a kill by Moravec. The two teams tied again at eight and nine, but Iowa pushed ahead after back-to-back aces by Moravec and forced Ohio State into a timeout. The set stayed close, tying again at 12 and 14. Buettner went back to serve another ace for the Hawkeyes. Iowa stretched the lead to three following a solid block by Davis and Mateo. The Buckeyes tried to catch up, but the Hawkeyes kept the lead and increased the spread to four. A Buckeye run tied things up, and carried them through to the end. 

Set 2 (Ohio State, 26-24): Moravec put down a kill for the first point of the set. The Buckeyes posted a couple of points, but McSweeney responded with a kill assisted by Ortega. A few possessions later, Ortega assisted Urquhart who found a hole and registered a kill. The Hawkeyes battled to catch up to the Buckeyes, and the two teams consecutively tied the set every point from six through 12. A Buettner kill gave Iowa the lead, but the Buckeyes were quick to tie it up once again. McSweeney continued her attacking spree in the front row with another kill, pushing the Hawkeyes ahead by two. McSweeney then teamed up with Mateo for a block that shut down a Buckeye attack. Following an Iowa timeout, Moravec came back onto the court and posted a kill from the outside. The set remained tight near the end, but Ohio State came out on top.

Set 3 (Ohio State, 25-14): The Buckeyes came out with momentum, but an Iowa timeout recharged McSweeney as she added a point to the board with a kill. Buettner also recorded a kill for the Hawkeyes, lessening the gap. Moravec put an end to a long rally with a successful attack coming from the outside. In a strong play by the Hawkeyes, Ortega set the ball back to Davis on the right side to register a kill. After two Buckeye kills, Mateo and Davis paired up in the front row to record a kill and give the ball back to the Hawkeyes. McSweeney came through swinging after an Iowa timeout, posting a kill in the front row. The Hawkeyes fought to catch the Buckeyes, but fell short. Ohio State took the set and the match.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa softball team defeated Kirkwood Community College, 11-0, on Sunday afternoon at Pearl Field in a 9-inning exhibition.

Four different Hawkeyes produced RBIs in the game. They scored 11 runs on 19 hits and three Eagle errors. Four Iowa hitters recorded a multi-hit game. Iowa struck in the first inning on an RBI single from sophomore Jalen Adams. Redshirt junior, Amber DeSena went 2-for-3 in the game with an RBI single in the third inning to make it, 2-0. The Hawkeyes broke it open in the fourth on a two-RBI single off the bat of junior Rylie Moss and a two-run home run from sophomore Skylinn Pogue. Iowa plated three more runs in the sixth inning on RBIs from sophomore Echo Mattiello and senior Brylee Klosterman to make it 9-0. Iowa tacked on two runs in the final three innings on RBIs off the bats of sophomore Anna Streff and Mattiello.

Iowa used six different arms in the circle against the Eagles. Freshman Mya Clark, redshirt freshman Kelsey Winters and junior Haley Downe each threw two innings. Each allowed one hit and combined for five strikeouts in six innings. The trio of Andrea Jaskowiak, Maren Judisch, and Jalen Adams went the final three innings allowing no runs on just one hit and struck out five Kirkwood hitters.

The Hawkeyes return to action on Friday September 29 as they travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa to play the University of Northern Iowa. First pitch at Robinson-Dresser Sports Complex is scheduled for 5 p.m. CT.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa softball team defeated Illinois State, 6-0, on Saturday afternoon at Pearl Field in a 9-inning exhibition.

The Hawkeyes scored six runs on 10 hits. All of their runs were scored on RBI doubles from four different batters. Freshman Soo-Jin Berry opened the scoring in the third inning to make it 1-0, Iowa. Sophomores Skylinn Pogue and Avery Jackson each recorded an RBI in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively. Redshirt freshman Kelsey Winterswent 2-for-2 on the day with two doubles and three RBIs.

Sophomore Jalen Adams got the start in the circle for the Hawkeyes. She went seven innings allowing no runs on five hits and struck out six Redbird hitters. Redshirt juniorMaren Judisch entered in the eighth inning and struck out two. Freshman Mya Clark threw the ninth inning for the Hawkeyes and got one strikeout.

The Hawkeyes return to action on tomorrow, Sunday September 24 as they host Kirkwood Community College at Bob Pearl Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT and admission is free.

CINCINNATI – The Cyclone soccer program (3-7-1, 0-3 Big 12) dropped its second-straight road contest on Sunday afternoon, falling to Cincinnati, 1-0, at Gettler Stadium.

In the first-ever meeting between the Cyclones and Bearcats, Cincinnati held ISU in check for most of the first half, converting on a penalty kick to account for the lone score of the day.

Cincinnati held Iowa State to a season-low four shots on the day, with two coming on goal.

In the first half, Cincinnati outshot the Cyclones 6-0 and was able to draw a penalty kick on a questionable call in the box in the 26th minute. Cincinnati’s Ellie Flower converted on the PK, sneaking one by Avery Gillahan, who got her hands on it but was unable to punch it away.

Iowa State pressed the attack into the half, holding the ball on Cincy’s half for the majority of the second part of the first half, but was unable to come away with a goal.

The Cyclones were able to put some shots on the net in the second half, tying the Bearcats with four shots in the stanza. One of Iowa State’s best chances, an Alex Campana shot, just missed wide left.

Iowa State was shut out for the third time this season as Cincinnati earned three points in the Big 12 standings to raise its total to four through three matches.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The University of Iowa women’s tennis team continued through day two at the Charlotte Invitational at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex.  The Hawkeyes won three matches on the day.  

In singles play, freshman Jessica Matthews went 2-1 against Charlotte and Wisconsin. Matthews defeated Shona Nakano of Charlotte, 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (11-9) and she followed that match with another win again Wisconsin’s Kaja Jacobson, 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 1-0 (10-6).   

Daianne Hayashida fell to Charlotte’s Ruxi Schech in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Barbora Pokorna was defeated by Charlotte’s Sara Suchankova, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-7) and Pia Kranholdt lost her singles match to Area Teixido Garcia of Charlotte in a straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.   

In doubles competition, the Hawkeyes went 1-1 against Charlotte. Pokorna and Kranholdt defeated Aranda and Nakano, 7-6 (7-5). Bluestein and Hayashida lost to Schech and Suchanova, 6-3.   

The Hawkeyes will finish competition on Sunday.

The Hawkeye bats were hot as they scored 11 runs on 20 hits. They had eight extra base hits and had RBIs from nine different hitters. Iowa plated four runs in the third, four in the fifth and three in the ninth. Six Hawkeyes recorded a multi-hit game including junior Grace Banes and sophomore Anna Streff who both went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Junior Devyn Greer went 3-for-5 at the plate with one RBI. Freshmen Georgia Lessmann and Soo-Jin Berry had back-to-back home runs in the ninth inning.

The Iowa pitchers struck out 13 Indian Hills hitters. Greer got the start in the circle for Iowa and went five innings. She allowed one run one two hits and struck out five Warrior batters. Junior Haley Downe entered in relief and went two innings allowing no runs and struck out three. Freshman Andrea Jaskowiak struck out five in two innings of work to close out the game.
