IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Devyn Marble scored 24 points, Aaron White added 11 with 13 rebounds and Iowa cruised past Indiana State 68-52 in the opening round of the NIT on Wednesday night. Melshan Basabe had nine points and eight boards for the Hawkeyes (22-12), who won a home game in the NIT for the second straight season. Iowa will host Stony Brook in the second round on Friday night.
Iowa shook off a sluggish start with a 19-4 run to open the second half. Playing before a sellout crowd of over 15,000, the Hawkeyes maintained a comfortable lead the rest of the way. Justin Gant had 16 points to lead Indiana State (18-15), which was playing in the NIT for the first time since 1978.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Missouri Valley Conference commissioner Doug Elgin says there’s no rush to replace Creighton, which is leaving for the new Big East. Elgin said his league, which will be down to nine members June 30, is studying potential candidates. He said preference would be given to schools in the geographic footprint of the Valley and with a strong basketball tradition. Media reports list Denver, Milwaukee and Belmont as possibilities.
Creighton athletic director Bruce Rasmussen said the Big East will provide an opportunity to recruit the highest level of players and help the school achieve its goal of being a consistent Top 25 men’s basketball program. Valley spokesman Mike Kern says Creighton will forfeit about $325,000 in distributions because it’s leaving with less than a year’s notice.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Cornell’s Kyle Dake is seeking to take his place among the greatest college wrestlers of all time. Penn State will attempt to solidify its status as the nation’s pre-eminent program — in the backyard of its biggest rival, Iowa — when the NCAA championships start Thursday. Dake, a three-time NCAA champion, is just three days away from possibly becoming the first wrestler to win four national titles in four different weight classes.
The team race figures to be a competition between the Big Ten’s best, led by the two-time defending champion Nittany Lions, Hawkeyes and Ohio State and Minnesota. Oklahoma State will also be in the mix.
NEW YORK (AP) — Creighton, Butler and Xavier are moving to the new Big East.
They will join the so-called Catholic 7 basketball schools who left to start a new conference and are keeping the Big East name. The league also announced Wednesday its completed broadcasting deal with Fox.
Butler and Xavier are leaving the Atlantic 10. Creighton departs the Missouri Valley Conference.
They join Georgetown, Villanova, Marquette, St. John’s, Providence, Seton Hall and DePaul.
JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — St. Louis shortstop Rafael Furcal returned to the Cardinals’ spring training complex for the first time since undergoing ligament replacement surgery by Dr. James Andrews last week, saying the operation went well and he is ready for rehab.
Furcal says Andrews is “happy we did this,” and confident the infielder will be ready for next year. Furcal originally injured the elbow late last season. He had hoped off-season rehabilitation would prevent the need for surgery. Furcal was never able to throw at 100 percent in camp, and after a few weeks opted for surgery.
Andrews performed the surgery in his Pensacola office. Furcal plans to rehab from the surgery in South Florida.
JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — St. Louis starter Shelby Miller retiring the last 11 batters he faced in four scoreless innings and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Miami Marlins 5-4 Tuesday. Miller allowed a hit and a walk. Joe Kelly, also competing for a rotation spot, wasn’t nearly as successful. The Marlins tagged him for eight hits and scored their only runs of the game in a four-run fourth.
Marlins’ starter Jacob Turner went five innings, allowing seven hits and four earned runs. Matt Carpenter hit a two-run double for St. Louis and Kelly singled in the go-ahead run in the sixth.
ATLANTA – Iowa State junior Hallie Christofferson was named a WBCA All-Region 5 nominee for the 2012 Division I Coaches’ All-America Team Thursday. Christofferson was one of seven players selected from the region.
Christofferson, a forward from Hamlin, Iowa, had a breakout season for the Cyclones, leading the team in scoring with 15.6 points per game. She also averaged 6.6 rebounds and was one of the nation’s top shooters at 52.4 percent from the field. Christofferson is also among the top free throw shooters in the country at 86.7 percent from the charity stripe. She is the only player ranked among the top-25 of both the field goal and free throw percentage charts.
Christofferson scored in double figures in 26 of Iowa State’s 31 games, including 11 games with 20 or more points. She posted seven double-doubles and shot better than 50 percent from the field in 20 games en route to being a unanimous selection to the All-Big 12 First Team.
The selection committee will determine the 10-member WBCA Division I Coaches’ All-America Team.
Region 5
The City of Atlantic’s Parks and Recreation Department Board of Directors, Monday, approved the fees for Summer Recreation Programs, and a local Eagle Scout’s project to improve the Sunnyside Park Disc Golf Course. Parks and Rec Director Roger Herring asked for, and the Board approved, no change in rates charged for swimming at the City Pool. Herring says they will also be offering punch cards again this year, which, if you plan to be a frequent user of the Sunnyside Pool, will save you some money in the long run. The punch card allows you to buy 15 punches for $50. That’s a savings of $10 over the daily rate of admission.
Herring says sponsorship rates for the Men’s slow-pitch softball program will also be unchanged from last year. The cost of sponsorships went up last year from $150 per team to $300 to increase revenue and break even expense-wise. An incentive to the sponsors came in the form of a banner, and their sponsorships were tax deductible. Herring says while that resulted in a decrease in the number of teams from 10 to 8, it increased the cost savings to the Parks and Rec Dept. and reduced the amount of red ink in the books.

In other business, the Parks and Rec Board heard from Atlantic Eagle Scout Nick Podhajsky, who proposed a bridge replacement project near hole number 7, for the Sunnyside Park Disc Golf Course. The current bridge was built by course designer and facilitator Frank Saddlemire, and while functional and fits the natural environment, is also a potential liability to the City, because of its undersized main supports…small, and widely spaced decking branches, and single rails on each side.
Podhajsky proposed upgrading the bridge to incorporate: utility poles for the main supports; treated 2×6 lumber for the decking; and treated 4×4 posts to support three rails on each side. It would be very similar to the design used for the bridge near the Sunnyside Schoolhouse. Donations and supplies for the project would come from local groups, companies and individuals, with the labor for construction and installing the bridge to come from the Scout and other volunteers.
The Board gave approval for Podhajsky to proceed with the project, which could be completed by the end of June.
