NEW YORK (AP) — Pierre Jackson had his fourth straight double-double with 17 points and 10 assists to lead Baylor to the first National Invitation Tournament title in school history with a 74-54 win over Iowa on Thursday night. Cory Jefferson scored 23 points and Isaiah Austin had 15 points and nine rebounds for the Bears (23-14), who reached the tournament final five years ago, but never had won it before. Mike Gesell led Iowa (25-13) with 13 points and Aaron White had 12. Hawkeyes star Devyn Marble was held to six points.

Baylor reached the title game with a disjointed, but ultimately winning effort against BYU in Tuesday night’s semifinal. The Bears looked much more complete on Thursday night.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State assistant coach Jeff Rutter is leaving the Cyclones to join Ray Giacoletti’s staff at Drake. Rutter spent seven seasons at Iowa State, the last three as the director of basketball operations under Fred Hoiberg. Rutter and Giacoletti have known each other for 20 years, and Giacoletti says Rutter’s roots will help further his goal to recruit players from the Midwest.

Rutter was the head coach at Wisconsin-Parkside from 1996-2003 before joining current Creighton coach Greg McDermott at Northern Iowa. Giacoletti was hired by Drake last week to replace Mark Phelps.

Iowa State defends handling of NCAA violations

Sports

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State is defending its handling of an investigation that found employees made 79 telephone calls to recruits that violated NCAA rules. In a statement Thursday, the school rejected claims that officials kept details of the violations from the public and oversight groups for too long.

Iowa State says it made the violations public Tuesday because that’s when a lengthy investigation was completed and sent to the NCAA. The school says it did so in the interest of transparency “despite the NCAA’s desire that institutions make no public comment” about pending cases.

School President Steven Leath says he personally notified the Board of Regents in January 2012 about the case, as soon as he became aware of it, and has kept them updated since then.

Top regents were aware of Iowa State’s NCAA issue

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – The president of the Iowa Board of Regents says he was briefed last summer about possible NCAA violations at Iowa State University but he doesn’t consider them serious.  Craig Lang said Thursday that he and Regent Bruce Rastetter were informed by ISU President Steven Leath about the investigation involving impermissible calls to recruits.

He says Leath told them the main issue was that coaches didn’t know they were supposed to document calls that failed to connect with recruits because they were dropped or not answered.  Lang says he recalls thinking “obviously, this isn’t serious.”

Iowa State announced Tuesday an internal investigation found 79 improper calls between 2008 and 2011, and 1,400 calls that should have been documented. It has asked the NCAA for two years of probation as punishment.

Chiefs sign former Packers linebacker Zombo

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs added depth at linebacker Thursday by signing Frank Zombo, who had spent the past three seasons with the Green Bay Packers. Zombo will be reunited with longtime Packers personnel man John Dorsey, who was hired as the Chiefs’ general manager in January and has been aggressively overhauling the team’s roster.

A former undrafted free agent, Zombo played college football at Central Michigan before signing with Green Bay. He played in 25 games and made nine starts, racking up 53 tackles and five sacks while forcing a pair of fumbles while dealing with several injuries.

On Wednesday, the Chiefs signed reserve offensive lineman Tommy Draheim, who spent time with the Packers in training camp last season.

April 4th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

The Iowa Hawkeyes hope to close out the basketball season as NIT champions when they take on Baylor this (Thursday) evening in New York City’s Madison Square Garden. The Hawkeyes are 25-12 and advanced to the title game with a 71-60 victory over Maryland in Tuesday night’s semifinal round. They take on a Baylor team that is 22-14 and posted a 76-70 win over BYU on Tuesday night. Iowa coach Fran McCaffery says a victory would be a great way to cap off the season.

Sophomore forward Aaron White says after missing out on the NCAA Tournament the Hawkeyes have made the most out of this opportunity. Freshman guard Mike Gessell says the Hawks are playing their best basketball of the season. It will be the final game in the Hawkeye career of Eric May and he would like to go out with a victory.

A victory would give Iowa its first NIT title. Baylor is is trying to become the first Big 12 team to win the tournament. Pre-game coverage on KJAN begins at 7-p.m., with the tipoff at 8.
