PITTSBURGH (AP) — A.J. Burnett took a no-hitter into the seventh inning nearly 12 years after throwing the only one of his career, pitching the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 5-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday night. Burnett (1-2) lost his bid with two outs in the seventh on Carlos Beltran’s double to right-center. That was the lone hit given up by the 36-year-old right-hander in seven dominant innings.
The only other runner he allowed came when he hit Daniel Descalso with a 2-2 pitch with one out in the sixth to end his shot at a perfect game. Burnett struck out eight to raise his season total to 35 in 24 innings. His bid for a no-hitter came on a night when he recorded the 2,000th strikeout of his 15-year career. Burnett reached the milestone when he caught Beltran looking to lead off the second.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Brian Ferentz left one of the top organizations in football to rejoin his father, coach Kirk Ferentz, at Iowa. His first season back was hardly what the younger Ferentz was hoping for after jumping from the New England Patriots to Iowa City. Brian Ferentz was a major piece of his father’s massive two-year overhaul of the Hawkeyes coaching staff. Brian, a former standout lineman for Iowa from 2001-05, left the Patriots to take over as the offensive line coach under his father before the 2012 season.
Iowa dropped its final six games and finished 4-8. Brian Ferentz isn’t making any excuses, preferring instead to focus on building enough depth during spring practice to withstand the loss of key starters.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Busch Stadium in St. Louis will host its first-ever football game on Sept. 21, a matchup between Southeast Missouri State and Southern Illinois University. Details were announced Monday at the ballpark. The field will be mostly in the outfield, though a small part will be on the infield dirt. There will be about six days to convert the field for football after the Cardinals conclude a home stand. But after the football game, stadium crews will have less than two days to get the field back to baseball before the Cardinals host Washington.
The new Busch opened in 2006. The previous Busch Stadium was home to the football Cardinals, and the Rams used it briefly before the dome was ready in the middle of their first season in St. Louis.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs began a three-day, voluntary minicamp without franchise left tackle Branden Albert, who has not been a part of the team’s offseason program. The Chiefs are allowed the additional minicamp under terms of the collective bargaining agreement that grant extra workouts to teams that experienced a coaching change. Everybody on the roster was present for the session at the Chiefs’ practice facility except for Albert, who has signed his franchise tag. Albert has said that he wants a long-term deal and there have been rumblings that the Chiefs are trying to trade him ahead of next week’s draft.
The Chiefs are seeking a second-round choice for Albert after trading away their original second-round pick for quarterback Alex Smith, who took part in Tuesday’s workout.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Rain has wiped out Tuesday night’s game between the St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates. The storm hit at the end of the second inning with the Pirates leading 4-2, and the game was called after a delay of 1 hour, 24 minutes. No makeup date was immediately announced.
The cancellation allows St. Louis starter Jake Westbrook to reset his ERA to 0.00. The right-hander has struggled against the Pirates in his career, and Pittsburgh turned five consecutive singles in the first inning into four runs.
Pittsburgh starter Jonathan Sanchez — who came in with a 12.96 ERA — allowed two runs in the first inning but retired the side in order in the second.
Iowa State brought former guard Keith Moore back as a student assistant in 2010, hoping for another success story in a program that helps former athletes return to finish their degrees. Instead, it may get sanctioned for major NCAA recruiting violations for the first time since 1986.
University officials say a well-intentioned effort to allow Moore to assist the team while completing a bachelor’s degree has backfired. It’s led to an NCAA investigation that could result in sanctions for the school and coaches found to have improperly contacted recruits.
The university is now facing questions about whether it properly vetted and supervised Moore, an AAU coach for top Iowa high school players. Experts say the Committee on Infractions will scrutinize the program’s relationship with Moore before deciding punishment.
AMES, Iowa (AP) — The absence of Iowa State senior running back Shontrelle Johnson hasn’t slowed the Cyclones down at all this spring. Iowa State finds itself with a problem many other programs wish they had as spring ball winds down. The Cyclones run six deep at tailback — assuming that Johnson’s recovery from an ACL tear goes smoothly — and each of them has done enough to excite the coaching staff. Iowa State wraps up spring practice with an intra-squad scrimmage Saturday at Jack Trice Stadium.
