Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz on their struggling offense

Sports

September 26th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says there is no magic formula to fix Iowa’s offense. The Hawkeyes laid a goose egg in a 31-0 loss at sixth ranked Penn State and the offense has become a national laughingstock.

Ferentz says there are no plans to shake up the coaching staff or change the play caller.

Ferentz says bouncing back this week against Michigan State begins with the coaches.

Ferentz says there were no bright spots at Penn State.

Ferentz says they would like to get the wide receivers more involved in the offense. wideouts have been targeted only 35 times in four games and only four times last week.

Iowa State’s Matt Campbell previews No. 14 Oklahoma

Sports

September 26th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

Iowa State coach Matt Campbell says the Cyclones need to be ready to face a confident Oklahoma team on Saturday night. After struggling to a 6-7 record in Brent Venables first season as head coach the Sooners are 4-0 and ranked 14th nationally.

Communication will be a key. The offense will need to operate in a loud stadium and the defense will need to handle the Sooners’ fast paced offense.

Defense has been a key to OU’s rise this season. After giving up 30 points per game a year ago the Sooners are yielding less than nine per game.

Campbell says there has been an influx of talent and added experience.

Opponents were selected based on a combination of geography, historical results and a poll of the coaches to best balance the schedule in terms of travel and competitive balance. Teams will begin conference play on Saturday, January 6 and finish the regular season on Saturday, March 9. The Phillips 66 Big 12 Men’s Basketball Championship will be conducted Tuesday-Saturday, March 12-16 at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Missouri.

All 126 league contests are slated for telecast with 122 on ESPN platforms, including Big 12 Now on ESPN+, and four on CBS and Paramount+. Dates, times and television designations are subject to change. Finalized details for flex picks will be announced closer to the game dates.

Seven Big 12 teams played in the 2023 NCAA Championship for the seventh season since 2010, including six of the last nine tournaments conducted. With Oklahoma State’s appearance in the NIT, the Big 12 placed at least 80% of teams in postseason play for the fifth season since 2003-04. The Big 12 was the only conference with 80% of its teams playing in the 2023 major postseason tournaments.

Becht Tabbed Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Week

Sports

September 26th, 2023 by admin

Weekly honors continue to roll in for quarterback Rocco Becht after his impressive performance against Oklahoma State. The Cyclone signal caller has been named the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Week, the Maxwell Football Club announced Tuesday.

Becht completed 27 of 38 passes for 348 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions in a 34-27 victory over the Cowboys. He is one of four quarterbacks in ISU history to record a game with 300-plus yards passing, three touchdowns and no interceptions.

Becht’s three touchdowns, 27 completions and 348 yards were all career bests.

With the win, the Wesley Chapel, Fla. native joined Brock Purdy and Kyle Kempt as quarterbacks under coach Matt Campbell to win their first career Big 12 start.

Becht has a passing touchdown in each of his first four career starts and his total of seven on the season are the fifth-most in school history by a freshman.

The Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award has been presented to the College Freshman Player of the Year since 2018 and is named in honor of Shaun Alexander, a former standout at the University of Alabama and with the Seattle Seahawks in the NFL.

Becht was also named to the Davey O’Brien Award’s Great 8 List for Week 4, which recognizes the top quarterback performances from around the country, yesterday.
