Holliday, Garcia lead Cards to 2-1 win over Reds

Sports

May 1st, 2013 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Matt Holliday hit a two-run homer, Jaime Garcia continued his mastery of Cincinnati with eight strong innings and the St. Louis Cardinals snapped a three-game losing streak with a 2-1 win over the Reds on Tuesday night. Garcia (3-1) gave up one run on seven hits, struck out three and did not walk a batter. The left-hander improved to 7-0 in eight starts against Cincinnati at Busch Stadium and is 9-2 overall against them. He retired the last seven batters he faced and recorded 18 ground ball outs. Edward Mujica struck out the side in the ninth for his fifth save in as many chances. Bronson Arroyo (2-3) allowed two runs on six hits over seven innings for the Reds, whose win streak ended at three games.

National Bike month: Safety Tips

News, Sports

April 30th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

May is “National Bike Month.” The Iowa Department of Transportation says with the weather finally warming up, more and more people will be pedaling down the streets on two wheels. The DOT is joining the League of American Bicyclists to promote May as National Bike Month. Officials say you can check around your workplace or community for activities related to these dates:

  •   Bike to School Day – May 8 (Be sure to register at http://www.walkbiketoschool.org/)
  •   Bike to work week May 13 – 17
  •   Bike to work day – May 17

If you are heading out on two wheels, here are a few safety tips from the Iowa DOT.

  •          Always wear a helmet.
  •          Wear bright colored clothing, rather than dark colors, especially at dusk and dawn.
  •          Ride on the right. Ride in the right lane, except when passing another vehicle, preparing for a left turn, or avoiding hazards.
  •          Never ride against traffic. Always ride with the flow of traffic.
  •          Obey traffic signs and signals. Use hand signals to advise motorists you plan to turn, change lanes or stop.
  •          Make eye contact with motorists. Never assume a motorist sees you or that you have the right of way. Expect the unexpected such as: parked vehicles pulling into traffic; vehicle doors opening into your path; and debris on the road.
  •          At night use a headlight, taillight and reflectors.

For motorists, safely sharing the road with bicycles includes:

  •          Not honking your horn at bicyclists. They may be startled and lose control.
  •          Using extra caution when passing bicycles. Move entirely into the left lane; on a two-lane road, do not pass a bicycle if oncoming traffic is near.
  •          Being aware that bicyclists might swerve to avoid road hazards. Common road hazards for bicyclists are potholes, debris, drainage grates, railroad tracks and narrow bridges.
  •          Being careful when opening your vehicle door. Road widths often force bicyclists to ride close to parked vehicles where they may be injured by an opening door.
  •          And, when in doubt, yield to bicycles.

Chiefs finishing off overhaul of moribund team

Sports

April 30th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs weren’t exactly in shambles when John Dorsey and Andy Reid first walked through the door. After all, the team did have six Pro Bowl players on the roster. That doesn’t mean the Chiefs weren’t in need of an extreme makeover. Over the past couple months, that’s exactly what Dorsey and Reid have done. They made bold moves in free agency, trading for quarterback Alex Smith and signing such players as Anthony Fasano and Donnie Avery. They also locked up some of their own players, signing wide receiver Dwayne Bowe to a long-term deal.

They plugged most of the rest of their holes in last weekend’s draft, and now eagerly await the start of organized team activities to see exactly where they’re at in their rebuilding.

Latos outduels Wainwright as Red top Cardinals 2-1

Sports

April 29th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Mat Latos outpitched Adam Wainwright, extending his scoreless innings streak to 17, and the Cincinnati Reds got an RBI apiece from Joey Votto and Xavier Paul in a 2-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday night. Aroldis Chapman worked a perfect ninth for his sixth save in six chances. Yadier Molina had an RBI double off Jonathan Broxton that produced the Cardinals’ first run in 17 innings.

Wainwright (4-2) trailed just six pitches in after Shin-soo Choo doubled on his first offering, advanced on a sacrifice and scored on Votto’s single. Over his final six innings, the right-hander gave up three hits and one run. Wainwright walked two, one intentionally, after issuing just one in 37 1-3 innings his first five starts. Latos (2-0) worked around five hits and three walks in his sixth quality start in as many outings this season.

Cardinals send reliever Rzepczynski to minors

Sports

April 29th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Making a move to shore up a shaky bullpen, the St. Louis Cardinals have demoted struggling left-handed reliever Marc Rzepczynski to the minor leagues.  The decision Monday means for now that the Cardinals are keeping Mitchell Boggs on the active big league roster despite a 12.66 ERA.

St. Louis selected the contract of right-hander Seth Maness from Triple-A Memphis, and he was expected to join the team in time for Monday night’s game against the Reds. The 24-year-old Maness, 2-2 with a 4.32 ERA in five starts in the minors, was the franchise’s minor league pitcher of the year last season and will be making his major league debut.

Rzepczynski allowed seven runs in eight innings over nine appearances for a 7.88 ERA and gave up a two-run homer to Russell Martin in the ninth inning of Sunday’s 9-0 loss to the Pirates. Boggs was charged with the other three runs in that inning.
