• Won his fourth career tournament, setting a new school record with a 54-hole total of 197 (-16) to win by four shots and lead the Boilermakers to the team title at the Windon Memorial
• Carded rounds of 64, 68, and 65 to finish nearly six strokes below the course average of 70.70 for the week, beating his previous school record by three shots and the tournament record by eight
• Recorded 53 of 54 holes at or below par, including 15 birdies and his last 43 holes bogey free, to tie for the second-lowest score in Big Ten history
• The Academic All-Big Ten honoree earns his eighth career Golfer of the Week honor and his first of the season

The East Mills Wolverines football team hasn’t had the season that they had hoped for. The Wolverines have battled injuries and facing a tough schedule has them currently in a four-game losing streak after falling last Friday night at home to Fremont-Mills 55-22. The Knights dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball and Wolverines head coach Kevin Schafer said that his offense didn’t have the time to do what they wanted to

A bright spot for this Wolverines team has been junior Jackson Embree Jr. who is the team’s leading receiver and leading tackler. Coach Schafer has been impressed with the versatility by the junior so far.

Coach Schafer believes his team can get back into the win column this week as his East Mills team takes on Griswold at home, but Coach knows to get a win his defense is going to have to make a few stops and make some momentum type plays.

East Mills will kick off their homecoming game Friday night at 7:00pm as they host the 0-5 Griswold Tigers. Listen to the full interview with Coach Schafer below.

The Southwest Valley Timberwolves travelled to Osceola on Tuesday to compete in the Clarke Invitational cross country meet.  On a beautiful cool day to run, the girls posted a 6th place team finish out of 7 schools, beating Chariton.  The boys finished 9th out of the 9 schools posting team scores.

At the Denison-Schleswig Cross Country Meet the Kuemper Catholic boy’s team finished in first place wand scored 51 points. Woodbine came in second with 75, Harlan was third with 127, MVAOCOU was fourth with 131, and Tri-Center ended in fifth with 138 points.

Landon Bendgen from Woodbine came in first on the day. He was followed by teammate Gunner Wagner in second. Ryan North from Kuemper Catholic came in third, Ian Shelton from Harlan was fourth, and Jacob Greving was fifth.

The Harlan girls took first with 38 points and a massive point differential. South Central Calhoun was second with 103 points, Woodbine was third with 116, Denison-Schleswig was fourth with 134, and Storm Lake fifth with 152.

Lindsey Sonderman from Harlan ran for first place. Logan-Magnolia’s Allysen Johnsen was second, Lola Mendlik from Denison-Schleswig third, Chloe Judisch from South Central Calhoun was fourth, and in fifth Marie Des from Kuemper Catholic.

LUBBOCK, Texas – All five University of Iowa women’s golfers finished in the top-25, helping the Hawkeyes to a runner-up team finish at the Red Raider Invitational, which wrapped up Tuesday at The Rawls Course.  The Hawkeyes finished with a 876 total (291-290-295), tying the fifth-best 54-hole score in program history.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Hanna notched the highest finish and first top-20 finish of her career, tying for 12^th at with a 219 total.  The 54-hole total is the best of her career and her second round 72 matched her career-best round.

Sophomore Shannyn Vogler and freshman Ximena Benites both tied for 18th with 222s.  Vogler had the team’s best round of the day, shooting a one-over par 73, while Benites posted her third straight 74.  It was Vogler’s third career top 20 finish and the first for Benites.

Dabagia and Miranda both finished among the top 25 in the field.  Dabagia shot a two-over par 74 on Tuesday en route to a 223 total (79-70-74) to tie for 21st, while Miranda tied for 24th with a 224 (73-74-77).

Host Texas Tech ran away with the team title, finishing with a 17-under 847.  The Red Raiders’ Maja Ambroziak was the individual medalist, shooting a seven-under par 209.

It was great to play with a really good Texas Tech team today and we walked away knowing we need to finish stronger and continue to work to have great speed on the greens. Ximena had a great first team outing and it was great to see Kaitlyn post another career best.”

The top-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team returns to Iowa City to continue Big Ten play. The Hawkeyes will host Ohio State at 3 p.m. (CT) on Friday before welcoming Michigan State to Iowa City at noon on Sunday. Friday’s matchup will be a blackout and Sunday’s contest will be a pink out.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

• The Hawkeyes are ranked No. 1 in this week’s NFHCA poll for the fourth week in a row. It is the second time in program history the Hawkeyes have been ranked No. 1 (2021) by the NFHCA. Iowa has been ranked in 76 consecutive polls dating back to the 2016 season.

• No. 1 Iowa leads the nation in winning percentage (1.000), shutouts (7), shutouts per game (.78), scoring margin (4.23), scoring average (4.56), goals (41), goals per game (4.56), goals allowed (3), goals against average (0.33), and points per game (12.33). The Hawkeyes rank third in assists per game (3.22) and fourth in assists (29).

• Sophomore Mia Magnotta was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week on August 29 and NFHCA Division I Defensive Player of the week on August 30. She recorded her 18th save and seventh shutout in the Hawkeye’s Big Ten Opener against Michigan.

• Freshman Dionne van Aalsum was named NFHCA Offensive Player of the Week on September 13. She was also named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week twice this season (Sept. 11, Sept. 18) and Big Ten Freshman of the Week three times this season (Aug. 26, Sept. 5, Sept. 11).

• Iowa has defeated the top-ranked team in three straight seasons (3-1 vs. No. 1 North Carolina in 2021, 2-0 vs. No. 1 Northwestern in 2022 and 3-2 vs. No. 1 North Carolina in 2023).

• The Hawkeyes return seven starters and 14 letterwinners from a team that finished 12-8, advancing to the Elite Eight for the 21st time in program history in 2022.

• The Hawkeyes made their fifth straight and 27th NCAA Tournament appearance in program history — the most of any team as a member of the Big Ten Conference.

• Fifth-year senior Esme Gibson (second-team) earned All-Big Ten recognition for the 2022 season.

• Head coach Lisa Cellucci is in her tenth season at the helm of the Hawkeye field hockey program and her 24th season overall.  Cellucci has been a part of 287 Iowa victories and in 2020, she led the program to the Final Four for the 12th time — the first since 2008.  Iowa has posted double digit win totals in eight of her ten seasons. The Hawkeyes have won three Big Ten titles (2019, 2019 (BTT), 2021) under her watch.

• Cellucci earned her third straight Big Ten Coach of the Year honor in 2021.  She is the first coach in Big Ten history to be named Coach of the Year in three consecutive seasons.

Iowa quarterback Cade McNamara is confident the Hawkeye offense will make progress. Iowa is coming off a 31-0 loss at Penn State in which the Hawkeyes managed only four first downs. Through four games they are ranked next to last in the country in total offense.

McNamara says the Hawkeyes have shifted their focus to Saturday’s game at home against Michigan State.

McNamara delivered an impassioned speech to the team following the loss at Penn State.

Earlham dominated at the Orient-Macksburg Invitational with both teams winning 1st place. On the girl’s side, the Cardinals came in with 30 points. AHSTW placed second with 39 points and CAM placed fourth with 99.

Bella Lamp, Ava Paulsen, and Rylie Knop finished 4th, 5th, and 6th for the Lady Vikes. Nodaway Valley’s Jazz Christensen placed 7th. Orient-Macksburg’s Bridget Bracy took 11th and Yana Lander of AHSTW was 14th.

The Cardinal boys finished the day with an impressive low score of 20 points. Nodaway Valley came in second with 38 points and Diagonal took third with 87 points. East Union’s Jacob Driskill won the individual championship and Nodaway Valley’s Malachi Broers came in second.

The Wolverines had more impressive runners with Bryar Hudson at 8th, Paul Kading 11th, Luke Kading 12th, and Haden Colton 13th. Caden Geraghty of AHSTW was 15th.

THIS WEEK

University of Iowa women’s soccer makes the first of two scheduled television appearances when it takes on Purdue at 5 p.m. (CT) this Thursday at Folk Field. The game will be broadcast on Big Ten Network. Iowa returns home on Sunday to host Rutgers for the annual Pink Game for breast cancer awareness. Kickoff is slated for Noon at the Iowa Soccer Complex.

SCOUTING THE BOILERMAKERS

• Purdue stands at 3-7-1 overall with an 0-2-1 mark in Big Ten play. The Boilermakers have played four ranked teams this season against a strength of schedule that ranks 28th nationally (Massey Ratings).
• Purdue lost, 1-0, at Rutgers last time out; the Hawkeyes host the Scarlet Knights on Sunday.
• All three of Purdue’s wins came at Folk Field.
• Kayla Bush leads the Boilermakers offensively with eight points on three goals and two assists.
• Purdue’s 1.45 goals against average ranks last in the Big Ten; Iowa’s 0.30 GAA ties for first in the league.

SERIES HISTORY – PURDUE 

Iowa leads the all-time series, 10-7-5. The teams tied, 2-2, last season in Iowa City. That contest was one of just three times since the 2017 that Iowa did not win a game in which it scored multiple goals.

SCOUTING THE SCARLET KNIGHTS

• Rutgers picked up its first conference win last Sunday at Purdue; the Hawkeyes face the Boilermakers this Thursday on the road. Rutgers plays Nebraska on Thursday.
• The Scarlet Knights are led offensively by Allison Lowrey, with a team-best 14 points and six goals. Riley Tiernan is next in terms of offensive production with seven points and a team-high 27 shots.
• Redshirt freshman Olivia Bodmer has posted five shutouts at an 0.84 goals against average in her rookie campaign. Bodmer has a .791 save percentage on 34 saves this season.
• The Scarlet Knights rank 13th in the Big Ten Conference with 37 corner kicks through 11 games this season; Iowa is 12th with 45 corners taken through 10 games.

SERIES HISTORY – RUTGERS

Iowa trails Rutgers, 3-7-0, in the all-time series. Iowa’s last win over the Scarlet Knights came on Oct. 15, 2017, at the Iowa Soccer Complex. The Hawkeyes shutout No. 23 Rutgers that day, 1-0.
