Coach Shawn Petersen comments:

Tough day conditions-wise for the girls today — chilly and steady brisk wind out of the north — but I thought our girls for the most part handled it well; It was nice getting a win today — the first of the year for us; I was very happy for the team — the girls have worked awfully hard and have played all of the best teams around — even though I know they’ve shown improvement, it’s tough to keep grinding when the losses are piling up. We played Glenwood earlier in the year and got blown off the courts — even though the scores look lopsided against a very talented Rams team, our girls really played well and competed very hard — I was proud of their efforts today. Atlantic travels to Carroll for the H10 Conference Tournament Monday, before competing in Individual Regional competition on Thursday at Shenandoah.

Cardinals’ Miller retires 27 straight in 1-hitter

Sports

May 10th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Shelby Miller gave up a leadoff single then retired 27 in a row for his first career complete game, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a 3-0 victory over the Colorado Rockies. Eric Young Jr. had a line drive hit to right field to start the game for the Rockies but Miller (5-2) gave up nothing else in his first shutout. The right-hander struck out Young to end it with his 13th K, tying a Cardinals rookie record.

The one-hitter was the fewest hits allowed by a Cardinals pitcher since Bud Smith tossed a no-hitter on Sept. 3, 2001, and it was the second one-hitter of the night in the major leagues. Boston’s Jon Lester was perfect until he allowed a two-out double in the sixth against Toronto.

Cubs RHP Fujikawa off DL, RHP Dolis to Triple A

Sports

May 10th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

WASHINGTON (AP) — Chicago Cubs right-handed reliever Kyuji Fujikawa has been activated from the 15-day disabled list. In another move before Friday’s game at the Washington Nationals, the Cubs optioned right-hander pitcher Rafael Dolis to Triple-A Iowa.

Fujikawa has been on the DL since April 13 because of a strained right forearm. The major league rookie is 1-0 with two saves and a 12.46 ERA in 4 1-3 innings in five appearances with the Cubs. Dolis has made two appearances with Chicago this season and hasn’t allowed an earned run in 1 2-3 innings.

Chiefs open three-day rookie minicamp

Sports

May 10th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Offensive tackle Eric Fisher and quarterback Tyler Bray had vastly different experiences during the NFL draft, yet both of them ended up with the Kansas City Chiefs. Both have a lot of people watching them, too. Fisher was the first overall pick out of Central Michigan, and will be expected to compete for a starting job on the offensive line, though it’s unclear whether it’ll be on the right or left side. That could depend on what happens with Branden Albert.

Bray left Tennessee early but wasn’t chosen in the draft, and signed with the Chiefs as a free agent. He’s expected to compete for a roster spot, and maybe even push to be the backup QB. The Chiefs opened a rookie minicamp Friday. It runs through the weekend.

Chiefs start signing rookies as minicamp starts

Sports

May 10th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs have signed offensive lineman Eric Kush and linebacker Mike Catapano, leaving six of their draft picks unsigned as they begin a rookie minicamp. Kush was the first of the Chiefs’ two sixth-round picks out of California (Pa.), while Catapano was their seventh-round selection out of Princeton. The Chiefs announced the signings today (Friday). No terms were disclosed.

The Chiefs also signed 13 college free agents, including former Tennessee quarterback Tyler Bray, Florida wide receiver Frankie Hammond Jr. and UW-Milwaukee hoops player Demetrius Harris. The Chiefs were scheduled to work out their rookies Friday, Saturday and Sunday before the rest of the team joins them for the start of organized team activities on Tuesday.

Drake’s Joey King to transfer

Sports

May 10th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Drake forward Joey King, a Missouri Valley All-Freshman team pick last season, is leaving the program.  The Bulldogs announced Friday that King will transfer less than two months after coach Mark Phelps was replaced with Ray Giacoletti.

King averaged 6.9 points and 2.9 rebounds last season. King, a native of Eagan, Minn., played in all 32 games and shot 42.8 percent from the field.   Giacoletti says he respects King’s decision to leave the team.
