ST. LOUIS (AP) — Yadier Molina hit his fifth home run and Jake Westbrook pitched seven innings of two-hit ball in the St. Louis Cardinals’ 4-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs 4-1 on Wednesday night. Westbrook (3-2) worked around trouble almost the entire night in his second start since coming off the disabled list with a sore elbow. He gave up no earned runs, striking out two and walking three. Edward Mujica pitched a perfect ninth inning for his 21st save in 21 attempts.

Edwin Jackson (3-9) was pulled after he hit Jon Jay following Molina’s blast to left field. He pitched 5 1-3 innings, allowing four earned runs on six hits. He struck out one and walked two.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have come to terms with Marco Gonzales, their top pick from the Major League Baseball draft this month. Gonzales, taken 19th overall, pitched and played infield at Gonzaga but was drafted as a pitcher. The left-hander is coming off a junior season in which he went 7-3 with a 2.80 ERA. He started 16 of the 17 games he pitched, striking out 96 and walking 25 in 106 innings. He also led the Bulldogs with a .311 batting average with two home runs and 26 RBIs.

He earned the 2012 West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year and was a Golden Spike finalist. He finished his college career with a 26-7 record and a 2.34 ERA. Terms of the contract were not disclosed on Wednesday.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa says that reserve guard Kathy Thomas is transferring. Hawkeyes coach Lisa Bluder announced Wednesday that Thomas has been released from her scholarship after two seasons. Thomas, a 5-foot-6 native of Flint, Mich., averaged just 1.6 points in 32 games off the bench in 2012-13. Bluder says Thomas wants to play closer to home.

Calvin Smith II follows in father’s footsteps

Sports

June 19th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — For Calvin Smith II, sharing the same name and being the son of Calvin Smith means carrying a lot of weight. It’s not easy following in the footsteps of a former world-record holder, world champion, Olympic medalist and Hall of Famer. That’s why, at an early age, the son decided he wasn’t going to be a 100-meter sprinter like his father, but rather would make a name for himself in his own event, the 400, and stand out on his own merits.

One thing’s for sure: He certainly inherited his dad’s speed as he competes this week at the U.S. championships, hoping to earn a spot on the world team headed to Moscow in August.

Spencer man bags $1,600 for walleye

Ag/Outdoor, Sports

June 19th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

SPENCER, Iowa (AP) — A Spencer man has caught a $1,600 walleye on Big Spirit Lake in northern Iowa. Joe Larson caught a tagged fish that was part of a contest sponsored by the Iowa Great Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce. In early May, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources released six tagged walleye in Big Spirit Lake, West Lake Okoboji and East Lake Okoboji for the contest. For anglers who paid $15 and registered for the extended contest, there’s still a chance to win some money for catching one of the tagged fish up until Sept. 1.

Larson caught his fish Thursday and the Chamber of Commerce released details on Tuesday. Proceeds from the Great Walleye Weekend contest go to the Easter Seals of Iowa.

DNR says Iowa boaters need to follow new laws

Ag/Outdoor, Sports

June 19th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa boaters will need to follow new laws designed to protect the state’s lakes and rivers from non-native aquatic species. The Department of Natural Resources says that beginning July 1st, it will be illegal to transport any aquatic plants on water-related equipment. Boaters also will be required to drain all water from boats and equipment before leaving a body of water, then keep drain plugs removed or opened while transporting the equipment.

Signs listing the rules will be posted at public access points. The new laws and earlier regulations are aimed at preventing the spread of creatures such as zebra mussels and Eurasian watermilfoil.
