Timothy Peters wins NASCAR Trucks race at Iowa

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — Timothy Peters claimed the lead after a restart on lap 195 to win the NASCAR Trucks Series race at Iowa Speedway on Saturday night. The win is Peters’ first of the 2013 Trucks season and sixth of his career. He also became the first Trucks driver to win twice at Iowa.

Peters edged out 17-year-old Erik Jones for the victory by .225 seconds. Behind Jones was James Buescher in third, Ron Hornaday Jr. in fourth and Chase Elliot, another 17-year-old, in fifth.

Pole-sitter German Quiroga Jr. — the first Mexican-born driver to win a pole in the NASCAR Trucks Series — led the first 56 laps of the race before finishing 14th. Ty Dillon, who led a race-high 57 laps, finished 16th.

Torrid Summerhays takes lead

SILVIS, Ill. (AP) — Daniel Summerhays carded ten birdies during a 9-under 62 that has vaulted him into the lead after three rounds of the John Deere Classic. Summerhays is at 19-under par, good for a two-shot lead over Canada’s David Hearn who shot a 64. Summerhays is looking for his first PGA Tour win.

Defending champ Zach Johnson trails by three shots after posted a 67. He has now shot 19 consecutive rounds in the 60s on the TPC Deer Run course.

Allen ‘s lead reduced

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Michael Allen is still the leader after the third round of the U.S. Senior Open at 8-under par, but the lead has shrunk. Allen posted a 2-over 72 for a 2-shot lead over hard charging Kenny Perry and Fred Funk. Allen started the day with a 5-shot lead. Perry ate into that with a 6-under 64 that saw him go 4-under over the final ten holes. Funk shot a 67 to move into contention.

Garza pitches Cubs to 6-4 victory over Cardinals

CHICAGO (AP) — Matt Garza pitched into the seventh inning for his fifth consecutive win and Alfonso Soriano homered again, leading the Chicago Cubs to a 6-4 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday night. Garza allowed a season-high 10 hits in 6 2-3 innings, but held the NL’s highest scoring offense to two runs while improving to 5-0 with a 1.24 ERA in his last six starts. The right-hander struck out four and walked two.

Jon Jay had four hits and Matt Adams went 2 for 4 for St. Louis, which had won six of seven, including a 3-2 victory in the second game of the four-game series on Friday night. Lance Lynn (11-4) was knocked out in the fifth inning in his second-shortest outing of the season.
