Ailing Chiefs Moeaki, Avery back in practice

Sports

July 24th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Tony Moeaki spent most of the Kansas City Chiefs’ offseason workouts watching from the sideline with a baseball cap on his head. Donnie Avery did the same thing. They’re both happy to have a helmet on instead.

Moeaki had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee after last season, keeping the tight end from participating in the first round of practices under new coach Andy Reid. Avery only managed to get in a couple workouts before a high ankle sprain sidelined the wide receiver.

Both of them are allowed to practice with the rookies this week ahead of the rest of the veterans reporting to training camp on Thursday. The first full-squad workout is Friday.

Former Creighton Coach ‘Red’ McManus Dies at 88

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Creighton University says former head basketball coach John “Red” McManus has died.

Creighton sports information director Rob Anderson said Wednesday that McManus passed away Tuesday in Omaha at the age of 88. McManus had been under hospice care.

McManus was an assistant at Iowa when he was selected for Creighton’s top spot. McManus led the Bluejays to national prominence during his tenure, 1959-1969, and coached them in two NCAA tournaments. Among his top players were two future NBA members, Paul Silas and Bob Portman.

His career record at Creighton was 138-118.

Creighton athletic director Bruce Rasmussen says McManus “will be remembered as one of the greatest Bluejays of all time.”

Services were pending.

Former UNO football coach arrested in Iowa

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) – A former University of Nebraska at Omaha football coach has been arrested in Iowa on suspicion of soliciting prostitution. Police in Council Bluffs, just across the Missouri River from Omaha, Neb., say former UNO head football coach Pat Behrns was one of 12 people arrested Tuesday during a sting operation at a Pottawattamie County hotel.

The 63-year-old Behrns served as the UNO Mavericks’ head coach from 1994 until the century-old program was shut down in March 2011. Before that, Behrns had been head coach of the University of North Dakota football team from 1980 to 1985.

Pottawattamie County Jail authorities say Behrns posted a $2,000 bond Tuesday evening to be released.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets have agreed to terms on a one-year deal with veteran kicker Billy Cundiff. He will compete with Nick Folk for the job in training camp. Cundiff was last with the San Francisco 49ers, who signed him during the playoffs last January to compete with a struggling David Akers but didn’t play.

A Pro Bowl pick in 2010, Cundiff is now with his 12th organization since being signed as an undrafted free agent by Dallas in 2002 out of Drake University in Des Moines.  Cundiff is a former Harlan prep.

Miller pitches Cardinals past Phillies

Sports

July 24th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Shelby Miller threw six shutout innings and Allen Craig drove in a pair of runs to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 4-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday night. Miller broke out of a three-start slump with one of his finest efforts of the season. He had given up 10 earned runs in 12 2-3 innings over his previous three starts. He was working on 12 days rest and gave up three hits while striking out six and walking one. He is the third St. Louis starter to reach double-digits in wins joining Adam Wainwright and Lance Lynn.

The Cardinals have won four of five and 10 of 13. Philadelphia lost its third straight game. Edward Mujica picked up his 29th save in 31 opportunities. Randy Choate, Seth Maness and Trevor Rosenthal followed Miller to mound.

Chiefs’ Commings breaks collarbone in practice

Sports

July 24th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs safety Sanders Commings fractured his left collarbone in his first practice of training camp when he landed on it while trying to defend a pass. The fifth-round draft pick jumped to defend tight end Tony Moeaki and landed hard on one of the practice fields at Missouri Western State University on Tuesday. Commings immediately walked off the field and was taken for X-rays that revealed the break.

Commings wasn’t wearing shoulder pads because players are barred from wearing them for the first three practices under terms of the most recent collective bargaining agreement. The Chiefs hadn’t yet scheduled surgery Tuesday night, and a team spokesman said it wasn’t known how long Commings will be out. He was expected to provide depth in a secondary that underwent a massive overhaul this past offseason.
