Kelly, Holliday lead Cards to 6-1 win over Reds

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Joe Kelly tossed six strong innings and Matt Holliday drove in a run for a seventh straight game, lifting the St. Louis Cardinals to a 6-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night. St. Louis has won six of its last seven, including the first two games of this three-game set. The first-place Cardinals have won eight of their last 10 against the third-place Reds and lead them by 4 ½ games in the NL Central.

Shin-Soo Choo homered for Cincinnati, which lost for the fourth time in five games. Kelly, who allowed one run on eight hits, improved to 6-0 in nine starts since rejoining the starting rotation on July 6. Mat Latos gave up four runs and nine hits in six-plus innings. He struck out four and did not walk a batter.

Iowa excited for debut of new QB Jake Rudock

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — A new starting quarterback with a sterling prep resume should be reason for optimism at Iowa, which has seen its victories dip three years in a row. But the Hawkeyes and their win-starved fans don’t quite know what to expect from sophomore Jake Rudock. For the first time in nearly two decades, Iowa’s quarterback will take his first career snap in an opener when Rudock starts against Northern Illinois on Saturday.

Rudock emerged from a three-man competition this offseason as the leader of an offense seeking major improvements in 2012. Rudock, a 6-foot-3 native of Weston, Fla., who served as James Vandenberg’s backup last season, held off C.J. Beathard and Cody Sokol to earn the starting job.

Cardinals demote Lyons, recall Sallas

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals demoted Tyler Lyons to Triple-A Memphis, a day after the lefty started against the Reds, and recalled reliever Fernando Salas to boost the bullpen. Lyons is 2-4 with a 4.73 ERA in nine games for St. Louis, and allowed one earned run in five innings with no decision in a win over Cincinnati. He’s 7-2 with a 3.39 ERA in 16 starts at Memphis.

Salas has appeared in 19 games with St. Louis, going 0-2 with a 4.79 ERA, and is 1-2 with a 1.90 ERA and 12 saves in 22 games in the minors. The former Cardinals closer has eight saves and a 1.64 ERA this month.

New-look Chiefs ready for fresh start in 2013

Sports

August 27th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs are ready to move on after last year’s 2-14 debacle and countless off-the-field distractions. The Chiefs have a new general manager in John Dorsey, a new coach in Andy Reid and a new quarterback in Alex Smith leading a new-look team into its season opener Sept. 8 at Jacksonville.

The Chiefs had more than 50 newcomers on the 90-man roster that reported to training camp, and just five of the 22 on their two-deep were in the same spot as they were for the final game of last season.

Who’s fastest: Chiefs’ Charles or Royals’ Dyson?

Sports

August 27th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The challenge has been laid down. All that’s separating Royals outfielder Jarrod Dyson and Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles from deciding the fastest man in Kansas City sports is about 300 yards of parking lot between Kauffman Stadium and Arrowhead Stadium. Probably the folks in charge of their teams, too.

The match race is unlikely to ever happen in the city that produced former 100-meter world-record holder Maurice Green. There’s too much injury risk to line them up just for fun. Sure is a compelling conversation piece, though.

Dyson has swiped 25 bases in just 60 games this season, and said “I’m not afraid of nobody.” Charles is the former junior Olympian who said, “If he wants to put on a show, I’m never going to back down from anyone.”

Chiefs waive WR Newsome to reach 75-man limit

Sports

August 27th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs have waived wide receiver Jamar Newsome ahead of Tuesday’s deadline to reach the 75-man roster limit.  The Chiefs cut 14 players on Sunday night but still needed to make one more move.  They wound up keeping an extra tight end in part because of uncertain health at the position. Tight end Tony Moeaki has a fractured shoulder and Travis Kelce has been out with a bruised knee.

Newsome had five catches for 73 yards in six games last season. He’s played in eight career games with the Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars. The Chiefs play the Green Bay Packers on Thursday night at Arrowhead Stadium. They’ll have to trim their roster to 53 players by Saturday.

Former IWCC QB Waters to start at QB for K-State in opener

Sports

August 27th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Former Iowa Western Community College Quarterback Jake Waters will be under center when defending Big 12 champion Kansas State opens its season Friday night against defending FCS national champion North Dakota State.

Wildcats coach Bill Snyder said on the Big 12’s media teleconference Monday the junior college transfer was more consistent throughout fall camp than Daniel Sams, who backed up departed Heisman Trophy finalist Collin Klein last season. Snyder did say that both quarterbacks will play against the Bison.

Waters is considered the more polished passer after throwing for more than 3,500 yards, 39 touchdowns and only three interceptions for Iowa Western last season. Sams is considered the better runner. He had 235 yards and three touchdowns on the ground while playing in parts of eight games last year.

Craig powers Cardinals past Reds 8-6

Sports

August 27th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Allen Craig hit his first career grand slam with two out in the seventh inning, helping the St. Louis Cardinals rally for an 8-6 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Monday night. Matt Holliday also had a long three-run homer as St. Louis moved into sole possession of first place in the NL Central for the first time since July 29. The Cardinals lead idle Pittsburgh by a half-game and Cincinnati by 3½ games in the top-heavy division.

Rookie Carlos Martinez pitched two innings for his first major league win and Edward Mujica worked a perfect ninth for his 35th save. Zack Cozart had two hits and three RBIs for the Reds, who blew leads of 4-0 and 5-3. Jay Bruce hit his 25th homer in the eighth.
