AHSTW Vikings looking to make playoff push

Sports

October 5th, 2023 by admin

The AHSTW Vikings football team has had a up and down season. The Vikings began their season with two straight blowout wins by a combined score of 105-34. The Vikings then would lose their next three in heartbreak fashion as two of the three games were decided by one possession and the game at home vs top 5 ranked Treynor the Vikings lost 26-25. The Vikings took that loss and rallied together as a team in an absolutely dominating performance as they defeated Missouri Valley 49-0. This performance was all started by the impressive play of the defense and their ability to get off the field in crucial down situations said Head Coach Grant Harris.

The offense came to play as well as they tallied seven touchdowns and rushed for 240 yards as a team. The Vikings were led by junior Luke Sternberg who exploded for 193 yards and three touchdowns on just 9 carries. Coach Harris says the goal for the Vikings is to get the ball to Sternberg on the outside in space.

This week the Vikings welcome in the 2-4 Red Oak Tigers who are coming off a 38-12 loss vs Shenandoah. Coach Harris said for his team to come out with a victory on Friday night it’s all about doing it for each and every player in that locker room.

The Vikings sitting at 3-3 with two games remaining know every game counts and matters if they want to make a playoff push and extend their season. The AHSTW Vikings and Red Oak Tigers will kick off at 7:00pm Friday evening. You can listen to the full interview with Coach Harris below.

Iowa Falls to No. 1 Wisconsin

Sports

October 4th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

CORALVILLE, Iowa — University of Iowa volleyball fell to No. 1 Wisconsin, Wednesday evening inside Xtream Arena in Coralville, Iowa.

Caitlan Buettner led the match on both sides of the net with 12 kills for the Hawkeyes, and registered her fifth double-double of the season. Nataly Moravec followed closely behind posting 10 kills, and Delaney McSweeney recorded a hitting percentage of .462. Sydney Dennis put up 11 digs, and setters Kaia Mateo and Bailey Ortega had 16 assists a piece.

Set 1 (Wisconsin, 25-19): The Hawkeyes went 2-0 right off the bat, following a McSweeney kill and an ace by Moravec. The ball went into the hands of the Badgers for two, until a diving assist by Ortega set up Buettner for a kill. Wisconsin tied it up at three, but Iowa pushed ahead after a Buettner attack. The set remained tight early, tying at four and five. Moravec came through swinging from the outside to give Iowa the possession. The Hawkeyes took the lead by one after another Moravec kill, forcing Wisconsin into a timeout. Although the Badgers fought to catch the Hawkeyes, they trailed behind. A successful challenge by Iowa allowed them to keep the lead. Freshman Gabby Deery posted a kill to stretch the Iowa lead to four. The Badgers closed the gap until they met Iowa at 17. Wisconsin went on an offensive run and brought the match to set point. Iowa fell short and Wisconsin took the set.

Set 2 (Wisconsin 25-18): The Badgers stole the first point after a hard-fought rally. Iowa quickly responded, when Ortega found Deery for a successful approach from the right side. The Hawkeyes took advantage of a Badger error to tie the set at three. Wisconsin took a small lead, but back-to-back Hawkeye kills by Davis and Moravec brought the score to sixes. Iowa followed closely behind the Badgers, and Moravec recorded her seventh kill of the match. Wisconsin went on an offensive run, and Iowa battled to climb back. Michelle Urquhart registered an ace and Davis found a hole for a kill to bring the set within four. McSweeney posted a couple of consecutive kills for the Hawkeyes out of the middle. Iowa continued to fight, but were unable to catch up and Wisconsin secured the second set.

Set 3 (Wisconsin, 25-16): Wisconsin came out with motivation, but a block by Davis and Buettner added a point to the board for the Hawkeyes. Iowa came out of a timeout ready to battle, when Mateo assisted Moravec for a kill. The Badgers held the lead, but the Hawkeyes went on a 4-0 run to bring the set within one point. Wisconsin got a point, but Iowa stole the possession back for Buettner to record an impressive kill. The set came to a tie at 13, until Iowa capitalized on a Badger error to take the lead. The two teams battled back and forth, and tied again at 15 and 16. A Badger run made it hard for Iowa to recover, and Wisconsin pushed ahead to take the set and the match.

HEAR FROM HEAD COACH JIM BARNES

“I want to shoutout Caitlan Buettner tonight. She was across the net from multiple all-Americans and still led both teams in kills. Not only that, but she also tied for the most digs.”

UP NEXT

The Hawkeyes travel to West Lafayette, Indiana, to play on Saturday, Oct. 7 against Purdue. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT on B1G+ (subscription required).

Iowa State players preview TCU

Sports

October 4th, 2023 by admin

Iowa State players have plenty of motivation as they get set to host TCU in Ames. A year ago the Horned Frogs clobbered the Cyclones 62-14 in Fort Worth to close the regular season.

That’s Cyclone receiver Jaylin Noel who says TCU has an experienced defense.

Noel on the Horned Frogs’ veteran defense.

Cyclone guard Jarrod Hufford says last year’s beating at the hands of TCU is fresh in their minds.

Hufford says balance against the TCU defense is a must and it starts with a good run game.

TCU is not experienced on offense but Cyclone safety Jeremiah Cooper says they will come out with a fast tempo.

It is a fast tempo style of offense the Cyclones struggled against in a 50-20 loss at Oklahoma.

The TCU offense is averaging nearly 35 points per game.

  Leading the Cyclones
Iowa State will look to bounce back from Monday’s home loss to No. 6 BYU in Waco. The Cyclones are looking to earn their first Big 12 road win since 2021.

Mira Emma leads all Cyclones in goals (4), points (11), shots on goal (14), shots (22) and assists (3). The fifth-year senior captain notched her second career brace in the team’s outing against Portland State.

Fellow senior Salomé Prat notched her third score of the season as well as her third career game-winning goal against Houston, making her the second-highest point scorer for the Cyclones. Prat now has 15 career goals and four as a Cyclone.

Goalkeeper Avery Gillahan has tallied 37 saves and has faced over 160 shots through 13 contests. Gillahan recorded her second career shutout against Portland State earlier this season.

Scouting Baylor
The Bears got off to a rough start in conference play, but understandably so, as Baylor faced three straight ranked teams to begin Big 12 play. After getting through a gauntlet which featured No. 16 Texas, No. 6 BYU and No. 25 Texas Tech, Baylor is 1-0-1. Baylor is just 3-4 at home this season, but three of those losses came to ranked Big 12 foes.

Baylor’s attack is led by a pair of Bears who each have 14 points on the season. Senior midfielder Ashley Merrill has a team-high seven goals, while sophomore forward Tyler Isgrig has four goals and a team-best six assists. Merrill’s seven scores are the seventh most in the conference, while Isgrig’s six assists are the sixth most amongst Big 12 players.

Between the sticks, Baylor uses a rotation of Makinzie Short and Ashlee Zirkel. The two have played an equal 585 minutes this season and have totaled 66 combined saves, the most in the Big 12. Short has started six matches, while Zirkel has started seven.

From the Notebook

  • The Cyclones have lost just one match under Coach Fannon when scoring at least two goals. Two seems to be the magic number for the offense.
  • Iowa State leads the Big 12 in shot accuracy, placing 56% of its attempts on goal. That’s good enough for the 18th-highest ranking in the country.
  • Three Big 12 programs are ranked in the Coaches Poll this week, as BYU and Texas Tech are tied for seventh, while TCU reenters the rankings at No. 23.
  • Senior Mira Emma ranks in the top ten in ISU history in points, goals, game-winning goals and assists.
    • Should Emma play every game the rest of the season, she will become the school leader in games played.
  • After program legend Jordan Silkowitz was drafted into the NWSL, a new face took the net for the Cyclones this past week, as Avery Gillahan handled goalkeeping responsibilities. Through 13 matches, Gillahan has a pair of shutouts and 37 saves.
  • Gillahan earned Big 12 Freshman of the Week honors on August 23rd for her performances during the first week of the season.

Series History
Iowa State and Baylor will meet for the 31st time Thursday evening in a series that has been controlled by the Bears. Overall, Baylor has a 20-8-2 record and has won the last three meetings in Waco. Coach Fannon-led ISU teams are 1-2 against Baylor.

Up Next
Iowa State will stay in Texas, making a short drive down I-35 to Austin for a Sunday matchup with the Texas Longhorns. Sunday’s match is set to begin at 1 p.m. and will be streamed on the Longhorn Network.
