Ground game paves the way for Atlantic win over Perry

Sports

October 6th, 2023 by Jim Field

The Atlantic Trojans got the ground game going and rushed to a 21-0 home win over Perry on Friday night. The Trojan defense had another solid outing, preserving the shutout, and the offense finally gained some footing.

It was a tale of two different leaders each half for the Trojans. Dante Hedrington had a big first half and rumbled to two touchdowns, one from 15 yards out and the other a two yard plunge while flipping over a defender. Hedrington churned out 80 rushing yards in the first half and finished with 93. The second half featured sophomore fullback Gavin McLaren who helped march the Trojans down the field for their final score. That drive was capped off with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Zayden Parker to Colton Rasmussen. McLaren plowed his way to 70 yards in the second half to help grind out the win.

There were times when the game was a little sloppy with a combined six turnovers including three on downs. That combined with 12 penalties made for some missed opportunities for both squads. Atlantic was able to minimize the impact of their giveaways though with some solid defense to keep the Bluejays at bay.

Atlantic improved to 3-4 on the season overall and 2-1 in Class 3A District 6. Next up for the Trojans is a trip to Harlan next Friday night. Asa Lucas and Blake Burris will have that game for you next week on KJAN and KJANTV.

Perry dropped to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in the district. The Bluejays return home next week to face Knoxville.

Former Vice President Mike Pence, a 2024 Presidential candidate was on hand to conduct the coin toss before the game and joined us on the broadcast for a bit in the first half.

Exira-EHK run over East Mills on Senior Night

Sports

October 6th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

Exira-EHK had no problem scoring on a battered East Mills team winning 56-6 on Friday night. In the first half alone, the Spartans had nearly 400 yards of offense. The rushing attack for Extra-EHK was unleashed by multiple players.

The Spartans got out to a quick start in the first quarter by forcing East Mills to punt on their first possession. The Spartans offense then came out in a shogun formation and quickly handed the ball off to Alex Hansen. He would run along the entire sideline for 72 yards and a score. He had 3 carries, 2 touchdowns, and 164 yards rushing. The Wolverines offense back came out and were forced to punt after they were unable to convert. Cash Emgarten was deep to return and sprinted past the Wolverines for a long punt return touchdown. The points would continue to pour in during the first half. Thanks to impressive stat lines from players like Jameson Kilworth rushing 8 times for one score and 183 yards. Not to mention Kilworth’s passing in the pocket going 2-2 for 81 yards and two touchdown throws.  They were up 44-0 at halftime.

The offensive execution and effort put in the first two quarters was liked by Exira-EHK Head Coach Drew Buckholdt.

In the second half East Mills composed themselves well enough to force a fumble and go down the field to score with a 34 yard sprint from Jack Gordon. The score turned into 44-6. Exira-EHK responded with a touchdown of their own with a 24 yard touchdown run from Bryce Brabham. That enforced the lead back to 50-6. But, the Spartans found themselves playing sloppily through the second half with 3 turnovers and a total of 5 penalties for 59 yards.

The second half performance was one that Coach Buckholdt was not pleased with.

Through the ups and downs of the second half, Exira-EHK’s playoff future looks secure. Still, Coach Buckholdt had his focus on the seniors and gratitude for each and every one of them.

Exira-EHK improves to (4-3, 4-1) and will head on the road to face Griswold next Friday October 13th. East Mills falls to (2-5, 1-5) and will Woodbine at home next Friday.

Iowa hosts Purdue

Sports

October 6th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

Iowa hosts Purdue and it will be the first start for sophomore Deacon Hill at quarterback. Hill took over against Michigan State after Cade McNamara suffered an ACL injury and goes up against a Purdue defense that features an aggressive five man front.

That’s Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz who says it is a style of defense that is difficult to move the ball against.

Ferentz says the players have rallied around Hill.

Iowa State hosts TCU

Sports

October 6th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

Iowa State looks to bounce back from a lopsided loss at Oklahoma when the Cyclones host TCU. The Horned Frogs lost several key plays from last year’s team that made it to the national championship game, but Cyclone coach Matt Campbell says the pedigree remains the same.

Campbell says TCU is a talented team.

Oklahoma rolled up 50 points against the Cyclones last week and Campbell says they need a better pass rush against a similar style of offense.

Prat’s Brace Not Enough as ISU Falls at Baylor

Sports

October 6th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

WACO, Texas – Iowa State (4-9-1, 1-5 Big 12) fell in Thursday night’s matchup against Baylor (7-5-2, 2-3-1 Big 12) by a score of 4-2. ISU struck first, but four unanswered Baylor scores gave the Bears the advantage. Senior forward Salomé Prat was the bright spot for the Cyclones, as the Tarbes, France native, notched her third career brace and first as an Iowa State Cyclone. Prat wasn’t the only athlete on the field to notch a brace on the evening, as Baylor forward Tyler Isgrig also recorded two scores on the evening to pace the Bears and their offensive attack. Prat put the Cyclones on the board first, rifling a shot around a defender from the middle of the box in the 21st minute to give ISU a 1-0 lead. Baylor responded almost immediately to the Cyclone score, tallying the equalizer just two minutes later in the 23rd minute as Isgrig notched her first score. The Bears would add on another goal before the break to hold a 2-1 advantage at the half. BU came out of the gates aggressively, scoring in under a minute of action to take a 3-1 lead in the 46th minute of play. Baylor would then go on to extend its lead to 4-1 in the 61st minute on an Ashley Merrill goal.

Prat led multiple Cyclone opportunities in the second half, eventually connecting with her second score of the day to half the Baylor lead 4-2 in the 83rd minute.

Iowa State’s comeback efforts were thwarted as the Bears earned their second Big 12 win of the season, 4-2.

Both Prat and Alex Campana led the team in shots on the evening, both recording four, while Abigail Miller had three. Chloe Broughton, Hanna Reid and keeper Avery Gillahan were the lone Cyclones to play all 90 minutes this evening.

The loss is just the second time under coach Matt Fannon has lost while scoring two goals in a match. The only other time it happened was also against the Baylor Bears.

Baylor and Iowa State were equal on shots for the evening, as each team had 14. The Cyclones drew more corners than the Bears, 8-3, but Baylor held the advantage in both shots on goal (7-6) and saves (3-2).

Fannon’s Thoughts

“We were just a step off the game plan tonight, and it left us chasing moments where we really could’ve put our foot down and commanded the match. We consistently looked threatening but got our shape wrong on too many occasions. If we can cut out a couple of the mistakes, we will be great.”

Goals

Iowa State: Salomé Prat – 21’ & 83’ (5)

Baylor: Tyler Isgrig – 23’ & 46’ (6), Salma Simonin – 28’ (1), Ashley Merrill – 61’ (8)

Assists

Iowa State: N/A

Baylor: Callie Conrad (5), Blythe Obar (1), Ashley Merrill (1), Tyler Isgrig (7)

Up Next

Iowa State will stay in Texas, making a short drive down I-35 to Austin for a Sunday matchup with the Texas Longhorns. Sunday’s match is set to begin at 1 p.m. and will be streamed on the Longhorn Network.

Jack Trice 100 commemoration wraps up with several events this weekend

News, Sports

October 6th, 2023 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Iowa State University’s year-long commemoration of Jack Trice will wrap up this weekend in Ames. Toyia Younger chaired the committee that put together the celebration of the school’s first black athlete, and says they learned quickly that people didn’t really know Trice’s legacy.

Trice died 100 years ago from injuries he got playing in a football game for the Cyclones. The events of this year have focused on his legacy of breaking barriers, including a large sculpture near the football stadium that you can walk through.

The current day Cyclones will wear throwback jerseys for Saturday’s football game against T-C-U with five bars on them that were on the uniform that Trice wore.

Sunday is the 100th anniversary of Trice’s death, and Younger says a photo they found inspired them to include that at the closing of the commemoration.

The noon ceremony Sunday will be on central campus and include the awarding of a posthumous degree to Trice’s family, as he died before graduating.

Younger is a senior vice president at I-S-U and says they hope commemoration has educated many on Trice, who was an athlete, but also a student.

She also wants Jack Trice’s legacy to continue to be movement and not just a moment in time for the commemoration.

CAM Cougars continue their hot streak

Sports

October 5th, 2023 by admin

The CAM Cougars may be one of the hottest teams in all of volleyball right now. The Cougars defeated the Paton-Churdan Rockets on Thursday night in three dominating sets. The Cougars won the sets by scores of 25-11 25-5 25-12. The Rockets scored the first three points to begin the night in set 1, but from there on it was all Cougars. The Cougars got great play from their entire roster, but their main leader Thursday showed out big time. Senior Eva Steffensen was dominant at the net offensively and defensively but where she stole the show was back serving. Steffensen tallied 5 aces to lead the Cougars and also had 5 digs to go along with 16 kills. Head Coach of CAM Jenna Mcdonald has been impressed with the improvements of Steffensen and her serving game.

The Cougars are an experienced team and that shows with their chemistry on the court, but no two players have better chemistry on the court than sister duo senior Emma Follmann and younger sister freshman Courtney Follmann. Coach Mcdonald on the special connection of this team and sisters.

The Cougars are playing their best volleyball as tournament play approaches winning nine of their last ten, four games in a row, and even more impressive the Cougars have won 11 consecutive sets. Coach Mcdonald says the team is firing on all cylinders.

The Cougars finish the regular season with a 18-7 record and will go to the Rolling Valley Conference tournament on October, 14th at Coon Rapids Bayard, and then the Cougars will host Class 1A Region 5 tournament First Round. Hear the full interview with Coach Mcdonald below
