DT Kyle Love gets another chance with Chiefs

Sports

November 21st, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – After getting his weight under control, defensive tackle Kyle Love turned his attention to getting his diabetes in check. Now, he’s ready to focus on playing football again.    The Chiefs signed the former Patriots lineman after a workout this week, and he could be pressed into service as early as Sunday against San Diego. Defensive tackle Mike DeVito did not practice Wednesday because of a sprained knee and might miss the game.

That could create an opportunity for Love, who’s been working out at home in Atlanta and waiting for a call all season. He was released by New England when his weight ballooned, and then waived by the Jaguars before the season started.

The Chiefs released Anthony Toribio to make room for him on the roster.

ST. LOUIS (AP) – The St. Louis Cardinals have given a three-year contract extension to manager Mike Matheny, who has made deep postseason runs in both of his seasons.  The Cardinals lost the World Series in six games to the Boston Red Sox this fall and were one game shy of reaching the World Series in 2012, his first season managing at any level.

The team also announced Wednesday that pitcher Chris Carpenter has retired. The 38-year-old right-hander missed all of this season with a recurring nerve issue in his shoulder.
