Dream season for Chiefs ends in nightmare fashion

Sports

January 5th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — In many ways, it was a dream for Kansas City, going from 2-14 and the first pick in the NFL draft to 11-5 and a spot in the playoffs. Yet it ended in just about the most nightmarish way possible, a second-half collapse in Indianapolis. No wonder the Chiefs had such a hard time summarizing their season in the minutes and hours after a gut-wrenching 45-44 loss to the Colts on Saturday.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Sunday that players “had their hearts ripped out.” It was the eighth straight playoff defeat for the franchise, which still hasn’t won a playoff game since 1993. Reid promised the Chiefs would assess the season and then turn attention to next year, when they hope to finally end their playoff skid.

PEORIA, Ill. (AP) — Walt Lemon Junior scored a career-high 31 points to lead Bradley to a 68-57 win over Drake on Saturday. Lemon made 12 of 20 shots, including 3 of 5 3-pointers, as the Braves (6-9, 1-1 Missouri Valley Conference) shot 52 percent from the field. Senior Aaron Hawley, who elected not to play last season, came off the bench to lead Drake with a career-high 27 points. He made 9 of 13 shots, including 4 of 7 3’s and all five of his free throws, but the other Bulldogs shot 8 of 26.

Bradley had a 32-10 advantage on points in paint and 16-2 in second chance points. The Braves also had 14 points on fast break with the Bulldogs getting none. And although Drake had 15 turnovers, Bradley cashed in for 27 points.

Drake never led with Bradley building a 17-point lead in the first half, which ended 34-28.

Luck rallies Indy to 45-44 playoff win over Chiefs

Sports

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Andrew Luck threw four second-half touchdown passes and scored on a fumble recovery, leading the Indianapolis Colts from a four-TD deficit to an historic 45-44 comeback victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in a wild-card game Saturday. It’s only the second time in playoff history a team rallied from a deficit of 28 or more points to win, according to STATS. Buffalo trailed by 32 before beating Houston 41-38 in overtime in January 1993.

Luck’s first career playoff victory sends Indianapolis (12-5) to either Denver or New England next weekend for the divisional round with four straight wins. Kansas City (11-6) finished its turnaround season with three straight losses, two to the Colts and none more stunning than Saturday’s loss.

The Chiefs took a 38-10 lead early in the third quarter, but all they could muster after that was two field goals, while Luck and the Colts began their comeback.

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Georges Niang scored 17 points and Melvin Ejim added 16 to lead Number 13 Iowa State to a 73-62 victory over Texas Tech on Saturday, extending the Cyclones’ winning streak to a school record-tying 13 games. DeAndre Kane had 15 points for the Cyclones (13-0, 1-0) in the Big 12 opener for both teams. The win was the second in the Lubbock for Iowa State in the past eight games.

Jaye Crockett had 20 points and 11 rebounds and Dusty Hannahs added 16 points to lead Texas Tech (8-6, 0-1). The Cyclones came into the game averaging just over nine 3-pointers but managed only five against the Red Raiders. Texas Tech held Iowa State 15 points below its average.

Texas Tech tied the Cyclones at 50 on a 3-pointer by Crockett at 12:33 of the second half but the Red Raiders never took a lead.

VERMILLION, S.D. (AP) — Tyler Flack scored 16 points to pace South Dakota in its 86-52 win over Iowa Wesleyan on Saturday. South Dakota (5-9) got 15 points from Trevor Gruis, on 7 of 8 shooting, and 12 apiece from Brandon Bos and Adam Thoseby. The Coyotes shot 51 percent from the floor, including 7 of 17 from beyond the arc, and held a 43-24 advantage on the boards. Iowa Wesleyan, a Division III school, was led by Murray Schwengels with 13.

The Coyotes scored the game’s first eight points and later in the half had a 15-4 run as they built a 47-29 halftime advantage. An 11-point run to start the second half sealed Wesleyan’s fate as the lead grew to 27 points just 3:21 after the break. South Dakota held the Tigers scoreless over the game’s final 5:28.

No. 22 Iowa to face huge test at No. 4 Wisconsin

Sports

January 3rd, 2014 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — No. 22 Iowa is about to find out where it stands in its bid for a Big Ten title. Iowa (12-2, 1-0 Big Ten) will open road play in the Big Ten on Sunday against No. 4 Wisconsin, one of the hottest teams in the country. The Badgers are 14-0, and on Thursday they raced out to a 40-14 halftime lead in a blowout win at Northwestern.

Iowa coach Fran McCaffery says playing the Badgers on the road will help the Hawkeyes truly evaluate themselves at this point in the season.

Colts trying to amp down pressure for Chiefs game

Sports

January 3rd, 2014 by Ric Hanson

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Colts coach Chuck Pagano is keeping things loose this week.  He doesn’t want Saturday’s playoff game against Kansas City to change the routine, so he’s imploring the Colts to make this week business as usual.  Conventional wisdom suggests teams must play harder and players and coaches must work harder.

Playoff veterans know better. Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles remembers losing two fumbles in his first playoff game. And NFL sacks champ Robert Mathis insists players need to have fun. They know whoever stays true to form, usually wins.
