In the Match of the Season Sidney Defeats Griswold in Five Sets

Sports

October 11th, 2023 by admin

The Sidney Cowgirls were able to beat the Griswold Tigers in five sets of volleyball action as the match went all the way down to the wire. Griswold took the second and third sets of action as it looked like they were going to be able to take the entire match until Sidney came back and fought to the very end.

In the first set of action, Sidney took an early lead as the Cowgirls relied on Eve Brumsbaugh and Lilly Peters as they were both the driving forces in the entire match. Sidney ended up taking the first set 25-22 overall as they were able to keep Griswold on hold, even after the Tigers made a run late in the first set.

The second set saw Griswold get off to a 7-0 run to start things off over Sidney. After the Tigers realized the open spots in the back row, Griswold continued to dominate in the middle of the set. After Sidney went on a late run from the back row play of Gabi Jacobs, the Tigers were able to put them back down and take the set 25-21.

For Griswold, the third set went their way. The Tigers were led in the back row by the impressive play of Whitney Pennock as she cleaned up everything in the back row and continued to keep the serving game in the right direction. Gabbie Greiman was also a big impact in the middle as she continued to enforce the blocking game and helped in the quick sets in the middle against the Cowgirls. The Tigers ended up with a third-set win 25-20.

Set four saw a turn of events, as Sidney started with another early run. Fallon Sheldon helped in her serving and in the front-row play that she brought to the table in both the hitting and blocking games. Setter Addyson Foster was able to put together a great performance in the front row in set four, allowing the Cowgirls to run the offense on the strong side. The fourth set was a Sidney victory 25-19.

In the fifth and final set of action, Griswold started off on a good run as they went up by two, after back-and-forth play from both squads. Griswold continued to rely on the outside hitting of R’Nya Kirchhoff as she hit well out of the strong side all night long. Sidney was able to continue the blocking game and great defense from both Gabi Jacobs and Camdyn Hayes in the back row to help top the Tigers in the fifth set. Sidney won the fifth set 19-17 in one of the tightest matches all season.

Looking into the recorded stats on the night, Griswold was led by Gabbie Greiman with 18 kills followed up by R’Nya Kirchhoff with 10 and Marissa Askeland with nine. Askeland had three aces while Pennock and Addison Adams also earned one each. Carolina Arcia had a total of 37 assists on the night to top off the stats for Griswold.

For the Sidney Cowgirls, Eve Brumbaugh led in kills with 17 and was followed by Lilly Peters with 12 kills and two aces. Fallon Sheldon earned 10 kills on the night, one of her career highs this season. Both Myler Maher and Ashlee Moseley earned two kills on the night to add to the stat sheet. Libero Gabi Jacobs earned three aces and continued to hold the back row on the night.

Sidney continues to lead the series 18-4 overall and has held a winning streak over the Tigers since 2014. Sidney will travel to Lewis Central to play in their volleyball tournament this weekend. Griswold will wait to play on Monday while they take on Fremont Mills in the first matchup on Monday.

SWV POI Finals Night

Sports

October 11th, 2023 by admin

Tuesday night Southwest Valley faced Mount Ayr in Afton for the POI Semifinals. The Timberwolves did quick work and took the win in 3 straight sets advancing us to the championship match. The Timberwolves served aggressively keeping Mount Ayr out of system and allowing us to attack the ball. Mackenzie Fast had a team high 8 kills against Mount Ayr. SWV had a good spread at the net as we had multiple girls getting swings in. Madeline Bevington had 8 digs to lead the back row play. Charlee Larsen was fun at the service line with 6 of the team’s 10 aces.

SWV advanced past Mount Ayr into the Championship match where they faced Lenox and took home 2nd place. Mackenzie Fast again, had a team high 8 kills. Fast had no fear and was smart and past her years of experience on the court tonight. The Timberwolves struggled more at the service line and keeping the ball in system to get some more aggressive swings. SWV is proud to take home 2nd place in the POI. This team represents the school well. Southwest Valley has finished in the top 4 in the conference tournament every year for 9 years now. These girls are keeping that tradition alive and leaving their mark on our program.
Charlee Larsen also met a milestone tonight early in the first set of the Mount Ayr game. Charlee earned her 500+ career kill tonight. I am proud of the hard work she has put into her game and the leadership she brings to this team.

owa City, Iowa – The University of Iowa rowing team continues its 2023-24 season on Friday, Oct. 13, and Saturday, Oct. 14, on Lemon Lake in Bloomington, Indiana in an exhibition against the Hoosiers.

The Hawkeyes will compete in two 4-kilometer sprints done in four and eight boats on Friday, followed by four 1-kilometer sprints in eight boats on Saturday.

Iowa finished 20th in the CRCA Pocock Final Poll for the first time since 2019 a season ago, and tallied 17 outright victories. Iowa spent four weeks in the top-20 which was also the best since 2021.

The Hawkeyes look to build off of last season’s fifth place finish at the Big Ten Championships for the second consecutive season earning 90 points, 15 more points from the previous year.

 Quoting Head Coach Jeff Garbutt

“We are excited to head to Bloomington this weekend. Indiana is always a good test for us and we look forward to testing our speed against our B1G counterparts.”

Timberwolves at Conference Meet

Sports

October 11th, 2023 by admin

The SWV Timberwolves travelled to Lenox for the Pride of Iowa Conference Championships on Tuesday. Running on a beautiful fall afternoon at the Lenox Golf Course, the Timberwolves finished 5th in the girls team standings and 6th in the boys team standings.

In the girls race, the Timberwolves placed 5th overall, led by Olivia Kathikar (JR) in 35th place, Right behind Olivia were seniors Sierra Pearson (36th) and Karissa Richey (37th).  Rounding out the girls team was Victoria Fletchall (JR) in 42nd and Kya Newton (SR) in 43rd. Karissa and Victoria ran season best times tonight.  Karissa and Sierra were less than 20 seconds off from running career PR’s. Sierra and Kya ran their 2nd best times of the season, and Olivia ran her 3rd best time of the season.  Overall, the girls did a great job tonight, and with 2 meets left in the season, they are running some of their best times, which is all we can ask of them.
In the boys race, the Timberwolves placed 6th overall, just 4 points behind SE Warren and ahead of Mount Ayr in the team standings, the first time in a number of seasons that the boys have not been the last place team at conference.  Leading the way for the boys were juniors Matthew Means (27th) and Santiago Quintans Pineiro (29th) who both ran new career PR’s.  A pack of Timberwolves came in 38th, 39th, and 40th with Quaid Eddy (SO), Ashton Boswell (SO) and Ethan James (SR) just 8 seconds apart.  Lucas James (SO) finished 53rd to round out the boys team.
The boys overall continue to impress me this season.  They go out and run hard every night and continue to get better.  I challenged them to be a top 5 team tonight, and it was a close battle with SEW, and I am proud of them for going out and trying to get that tonight.  Matthew and Santiago are having great seasons, running new PR’s almost every meet.  Quaid continues to improve every week. Ethan has been incredibly consistent all season, with just 1:20 spread in his times across all races.
Ashton has been up and down a bit this season, but ran a good time tonight, and Lucas is really improved this year compared to last season.  Overall the boys have been great to work with, and I can’t wait to see what they do as the season wraps up in the next week.
The Timberwolves are scheduled to run on Thursday Oct 12th in their last regular season meet at Mount Ayr, and then wrap up their season with the State Qualifying Meet in Mount Ayr on Thursday Oct 19th.

Iowa prepares for Wisconsin

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says defensive tackle Noah Shannon has been cleared to returned to practice but is not sure when he will return to action. Shannon had been suspended for the season as part of a gambling investigation but may eventually return as the NCAA reworks its rules regarding wagering.

Ferentz is not sure how long it will take to get Shannon game ready.

Under Ferentz Iowa has had a history of winning ugly and defying the stats and this season has been no different. The Hawkeyes are 5-1 despite ranking last in the conference in total offense and 11th in total defense.

Ferentz says under first-year coach Luke Fickell the Wisconsin offense has changed but the results have not. The Badgers are averaging nearly 204 yards on the ground.

Quarterback Deacon Hill made his first start in a 20-14 win over Purdue and finished six-of-21 for 110 yards. He missed badly on several throws.

Hill’s second start will be at Wisconsin, where he played before transferring to Iowa.

Wheelers looking to secure home field advantage

Sports

October 10th, 2023 by admin

The Audubon Wheelers have been one of the most dominant and consistent teams in all of high school football.  The Wheelers have proven they can win with not only high-powered offense where they average 42 points per game and have scored 60+ points three different times, but they have shown they can put teams away with tough physical defense. The Wheelers have won two different one score games this year and have shown that they can compete and beat any team on any given Friday night. The Wheelers were able to have both sides of the ball last Friday night at Collins Maxwell where they defeated the Spartans 68-18. It was just 8-6 in favor of the Wheelers in the first quarter and the Spartans were able to keep close and competitive through the first half. The Wheelers took completely over in the third quarter where they won the quarter 34-0 and coach Sean Birks said the Wheelers were able to capitalize on getting short field.

The Wheelers wrapped up a district championship with the victory and were able to get all of their guys in the game to be a part of celebrating a season long goal.

The Wheelers are happy to have accomplished a long tough goal, but Coach Birks said his team is not satisfied and want to have home field through the playoffs with a win this week when they play the 5-2 Baxter Bolts.

The Wheeler defense will have their hands full with the Bolts quarterback Perrin Sulzle who comes in on the season with big numbers of 29 touchdown passes to just 4 interceptions and 1,979 passing yards. Coach Birks said the defense has to be solid and keep the Bolts guessing.

The Audubon Wheelers will secure home field advantage throughout the playoffs with a win Friday night on the road at 5-2 Baxter in a highly anticipated football game. You can hear the full interview with Coach Birks below.
