#10 Iowa faces B1G test at Michigan tonight

Sports

January 22nd, 2014 by Ric Hanson

The tenth ranked Iowa Hawkeyes are on the road in Big Ten action to take on Michigan tonight (Wednesday). The Wolverines tumbled out of the top 25 with four non conference losses but they have raced out to a 5-0 start in the league race and much of the reason is the play of sophomore guard Nik Stauskas.Stauskas leads the Wolverines with 18 points per game and is shooting 44 percent from three point range.

Michigan coach John Beilein says the Wolverines have also adjust to the loss of sophomore center Mitch McGary. Iowa is 4-1 in the Big Ten and the Hawkeyes have won only two of the last 12 meetings in the series. Pre-game coverage begins at 5-p.m. here on KJAN.

Oklahoma upends No. 20 Iowa State 75-54

Sports

January 22nd, 2014 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Aaryn Ellenberg drained a 3-pointer to start a 15-2 run in the second half that broke open a tight game and sent Oklahoma to its first win in Ames since 2008, pounding No. 20 Iowa State 75-54 Tuesday night. The win avenged an overtime loss to the then 14th-ranked Cyclones Jan. 5 at Oklahoma.

Ellenberg drained four 3-pointers en route to 22 points and eight rebounds. She scored 10 in the breakaway run deep in the second half, and also guarded Iowa State’s Jadda Buckley (who went off for a career-high 29 on Jan. 5), holding her scoreless. Nicole Griffin scored 12 and Sharane Campbell 10 with nine rebounds for the Sooners (12-7, 3-3 Big 12). Oklahoma outscored Iowa State 36-22 in the paint.

The Cyclones (14-4, 3-4), who have lost their last four, were led by Nikki Moody’s 18 points. Hallie Christofferson fouled out with 15 points.

Cards’ Holliday happy to have Peralta as teammate

Sports

January 21st, 2014 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Matt Holliday has been an outspoken critic of players who have used performance-enhancing drugs. He is willing to forgive and forget when it comes to Jhonny Peralta, his new St. Louis Cardinals teammate.

The Cardinals’ new shortstop was suspended last summer along as part of Major League Baseball’s investigation into the Biogenesis clinic. Peralta served a 50-game drug suspension and returned to the Tigers at the end of the regular season before signing a $53 million, four-year contract with St. Louis in November.

Holliday says Peralta served his suspension and welcomes him to the team.

Chiefs’ Johnson, Smith added to Pro Bowl

Sports

January 21st, 2014 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson and quarterback Alex Smith were chosen Monday to replace 49ers linebacker NaVorro Bowman and Patriots quarterback Tom Brady in the Pro Bowl. The two substitutions means Kansas City will be sending 10 players to Hawaii.

Bowman tore the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his left knee in Sunday’s NFC championship loss to Seattle. Brady bowed out of the all-star game one day after New England lost to Denver in the AFC championship. This will be Johnson’s third straight Pro Bowl, while Smith will be headed to his first.

They’ll be joined in Hawaii by Chiefs left tackle Branden Albert, safety Eric Berry, running back Jamaal Charles, cornerback Brandon Flowers, defensive tackle Dontari Poe, punt returner Dexter McCluster and linebackers Tamba Hali and Justin Houston. Charles is among four player captains picked for the Jan. 26 game.
