Iowa St PG Morris on pace for NCAA record

Sports

February 28th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State addressed its lack of experience at point guard with senior transfer DeAndre Kane. It turned out that the kid coach Fred Hoiberg recruited for the job was ready for it all along. Freshman Monte Morris has become indispensable for the 15th-ranked Cyclones (22-5, 10-5 Big 12), largely because he’s better at protecting the basketball than anyone in the country.

Morris has 101 assists against just 17 turnovers this season. He’s on pace to shatter the NCAA’s assist-to-turnover ratio record of 3.96-to-1 set by Tyler Newbold of Utah State in 2009. Iowa State, which has won seven of eight since making Morris a starter, faces Kansas State (19-9, 9-6) on Saturday.

Sheehey sends Indiana past No. 20 Iowa, 93-86

Sports

February 28th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Will Sheehey scored 19 of his career-high 30 points in the first half and Stanford Robinson added a career-best 17 to lead Indiana over No. 20 Iowa 93-86 on Thursday night in a game that was postponed last week. The Hoosiers (16-12, 6-9 Big Ten) went on a 9-0 run in the second half, capped by a 3-pointer from Evan Gordon that gave them a 62-60 lead with 13:13 remaining.

Roy Devyn Marble had 20 points and Aaron White added 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Hawkeyes (19-9, 8-7), who have lost three straight. The Hoosiers scored six straight points to take a 77-69 lead when Robinson converted a three-point play. Sheehey dunked to give Indiana an 82-73 advantage with 1:35 remaining.

The game originally was slated for last week but was postponed after an 8-foot, 50-pound steel plate fell from the ceiling of Assembly Hall about 6½ hours before the scheduled start.

Big 12 beating up each other ahead of NCAAs

Sports

February 27th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — After two months spent mostly bludgeoning each other into submission, coaches in the Big 12 are starting to cast a wary eye toward the NCAA tournament. While other conferences may have a handful of standout teams, there are usually a few bottom-dwellers that everybody else can use to pad their records. That’s not the case in the Big 12, with its grueling double round-robin schedule, where even good teams are piling up losses.

Kansas, Iowa State, Oklahoma and Texas are almost certainly locks for the NCAA tournament, and Kansas State has a strong resume. Baylor and Oklahoma State are sitting on the bubble, two teams that were ranked in the top 10 at one point this season.
