Niese (elbow) exits early, Mets top Cardinals 10-4

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Jonathon Niese lasted only two innings for a New York Mets split squad Sunday, leaving a 10-4 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals with a sore left elbow. Niese will head back to New York for tests, the latest setback for the left-hander in what he described as “the spring training from hell.” He is expected to have an MRI exam Monday, and it’s unclear when he might pitch again.

Niese first experienced the pain during an intrasquad scrimmage two outings ago. Trainers put him on anti-inflammatories and he didn’t have any issues during his first start of the spring Tuesday against St. Louis. Adam Wainwright had a rocky outing in his third start this spring, allowing three runs and seven hits in 4 1-3 innings for the Cardinals.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — DeAndre Kane scored 17 points, Georges Niang added 13 and No. 16 Iowa State rallied to beat Baylor 74-65 on Saturday night to win its first Big 12 tournament title since 2000.

Naz Long and Dustin Hogue had 12 points apiece, and Big 12 player of the year Melvin Ejim finished with 10 points and nine rebounds for the fourth-seeded Cyclones (26-7), who knocked off top-seeded Kansas in the semifinals before ending the Bears’ tremendous tournament run.

Kenny Chery had 16 points for the seventh-seeded Bears (24-11), who have never won a postseason conference tournament. They’ve lost all three tries since the formation of the Big 12.

KIMMIMMEE, Fla. (AP) — Joe Kelly pitched into the sixth inning and had three hits to help the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Atlanta Braves 6-2 on Saturday. Kelly went 5 2-3 innings, allowing four hit and a run. He became the first time a pitcher to have three hits in a spring training game since Chris Volstad did it for the Marlins in 2010. Kelly started 15 games for the Cardinals and went 10-5 with a 2.69 ERA.

The Braves, still reeling from the possibility of starting the season without Mike Minor, Brendan Beachy and Kris Medlen, started non-roster invitee Gus Schlosser. He allowed three runs.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Western Christian’s inside duo of Taylor Feenstra and Josh VanLingen combined for 32 points and 24 rebounds Friday night, leading the top-ranked Wolfpack past No. 3 West Fork 48-38 for the Class 2A state championship.

Feenstra, a 6-foot-7 senior, put up 20 points on 9-for-16 shooting. He also grabbed 13 rebounds as part of a dominating performance in the paint that produced the seventh state championship for Western Christian (27-0) and coach Jim Eekhoff, who tied Davenport’s Paul Moon for the most titles by a coach.

VanLingen, a soft-handed 6-6 sophomore, added 12 points and 11 rebounds to help Western Christian cap the school’s first unbeaten season and avenge its only loss in a state championship game.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Brandon Snyder scored 23 points and handed out nine assists and unranked West Lyon rolled past Number 4 Dunkerton 60-32 Friday night to win the Class 1A state championship. Snyder quarterbacked West Lyon to the Class A football title last fall. He ran the show again as the Wildcats (23-5), seeded eighth in the eight-team field, won the basketball crown in their first trip to the state tournament.

The Wildcats did it convincingly, winning their three games at state by an average of 21.3 points and postingthe widest margin ever in a 1A championship game.

Kaleb Heyer added 10 points, 16 rebounds and five steals for West Lyon, while Nick Anderson led Dunkerton (27-2) with 11 points.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. DeAndre Kane had five 3-pointers and scored 20 points, and Big 12 player of the year Melvin Ejim added 19 points for the fourth-seeded Cyclones (25-8), who will play for just their second tournament title against the winner of Texas-Baylor on Saturday night.

Relying on some hot outside shooting, Iowa State took charge in the second half, and then held on as the top-seeded Jayhawks (24-9) tried to make a late run to get back into the game. Perry Ellis led Kansas with 30 points. Andrew Wiggins finished with 22.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Tre Demps had 20 points, including four 3-pointers and Drew Crawford added 15 points and six assists to lead 11th-seeded Northwestern to a 67-62 victory over Number 6 Iowa in the Big Ten Tournament Thursday night.

The Wildcats (14-18) became the first 11th-seed to win in the Big Ten tournament.
