Water safety experts are warning canoers, kayakers and boaters that Iowa’s bodies of water have been slow to warm. Certified paddling instructor Darrin Siefken, of Waverly, says even though the air temperature feels spring-like, the water can be ice cold and dangerous. “Our rivers and lakes here in northeast Iowa just thawed out within the last week. So, most of those water temperatures are only about 50 degrees…when the air temperature is in the 60s or so.”

“It’s a good opportunity to dress properly and bring along another set of clothes in a dry bag just in case you would tip over,” Siefken said. Kayaking is becoming increasingly popular in Iowa. Charles City has a world-class course built in 2011 and similar venues are under construction in Manchester and Elkader. Siefken instructs his students, before they hit the water, to let others know where they’re going and when they expect to return.

“And then make sure you follow up and tell them when you get back…it helps with today’s technology that we can get a hold of people pretty easy,” Siefken said. He warns that many rivers in Iowa are full of debris that has washed downstream and could cause navigation problems.

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa State University has suspended Abdel Nader from the basketball team after his arrest on suspicion of drunken driving over the weekend. The Iowa State Police arrested Nader around 11:40 p.m. Saturday on suspicion that he was operating a vehicle while intoxicated. Nader is a 6-foot-6 small forward who sat out this past season after transferring to Iowa State from Northern Illinois.

Nader led Northern Illinois with 13.1 points a game in 2012-13, and he was expected to play next season.  Iowa State athletic department spokesman Matt Shoultz says Nader has been suspended indefinitely in accordance with the conduct policy for athletes.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Former UNLV star Bryce Dejean-Jones says he’ll play his final season at Iowa State.  Dejean-Jones, a shooting guard who led the Runnin’ Rebels with 13.6 points a game last season, told The Associated Press in a phone interview on Sunday that he decided Iowa State was the right fit after visiting Ames over the weekend.

Dejean-Jones says he’s on track to graduate in May, which means he should be eligible to play as a senior for Iowa State next season. The Cyclones landed point guard DeAndre Kane last spring under similar circumstances. Kane earned first-team All-Big 12 honors and helped lead Iowa State to the Sweet 16. Dejean-Jones says he picked the Cyclones over Arizona State.

ST. LOUIS (AP) – The Chicago Cubs recalled right-hander Blake Parker from Triple-A Iowa on Sunday. Parker did not allow a run in three outings with Iowa. He recorded one save. Chicago sent down left-hander Chris Rusin, who allowed one run in five innings.  Parker was 1-2 with a 2.72 ERA in 49 appearances last season with Chicago.

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Matt Carpenter drove in three runs, leading Michael Wacha and the St. Louis Cardinals over the Chicago Cubs 6-4 Sunday. The Cardinals took two of three from the Cubs. Chicago has lost three of four overall. Carpenter hit a two-run single in the second inning and added a sacrifice fly in the fourth that put St. Louis ahead to stay at 4-3.

Wacha allowed three runs and five hits in 6 1-3 innings. He gave up a two-run homer to Anthony Rizzo on his 16th pitch of the game.  Wacha struck out eight and walked one. Trevor Rosenthal gave up a run in the ninth, but retired Luis Valbuena and Emilio Bonifacio with the trying runs on base to pick up his fourth save in as many opportunities.  Edwin Jackson allowed four runs and eight hits in six innings.

Iowa State basketball player Abdel Nader has been suspended indefinitely after being arrested and charged with operating while intoxicated Saturday, April 12th in Ames.  Iowa State head men’s basketball coach Fred Hoiberg suspended Nader in accordance with the Iowa State student-athlete code of conduct policy.  Nader is a forward that transferred this past season to Iowa State from Northern Illinois and was sitting out per NCAA transfer rules.  Nader would be eligible to play for the Cyclones next season.

Following the Iowa State spring football game head coach Paul Rhoads announce the dismissal of defensive tackle David Irving from the football team. Irving faces three charges from the Ames Police Department for his part in a riot near campus on Tuesday Night.  Pictures recently surfaced of Irving carrying a stop sign during the incident.

Rhoads stated during his press conference that “It’s a privilege and an honor to be a part of this football program and represent Iowa State football, Iowa State athletics and Iowa State University,” Rhoads said. “David Irving has exhausted that privilege to represent this football program by not meeting the expectations that we’ve laid out for him.”

The dismissal came after it was announced Friday that Irving was suspended indefinitely.  Irving was also arrested in mid-November of 2013 on a domestic assault charge that was later dropped.  He started 8 of the 10 games he played in last season.
