WASHINGTON (AP) – St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Joe Kelly has been put on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring.  The Cardinals also optioned righty reliever Keith Butler to Triple-A Memphis and recalled rookie right-handers Eric Fornataro and Jorge Rondon from Memphis before Thursday’s game at the Washington Nationals. Neither Fornataro nor Rondon has ever appeared in a major league game.

Kelly got hurt while trying to beat out a bunt attempt in the fourth inning of the Cardinals’ 5-1 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday. He is 1-1 with a 0.59 ERA in three starts this season.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Adam Wainwright threw a two-hitter Thursday night for his seventh career shutout, chipped in at the plate with a double and single, and St. Louis benefited from four errors by Washington in the Cardinals’ 8-0 victory.

Wainwright allowed Ian Desmond’s infield single in the second inning and Adam LaRoche’s single to right in the ninth. He struck out eight and walked three. During one dominant stretch, the runner-up for the 2013 NL Cy Young award retired 18 consecutive batters. This was the right-hander’s 17th complete game and his fourth two-hitter.

Desmond, Washington’s shortstop, made a pair of errors, raising his season total to seven. The Nationals have 20 through 16 games, an average of 1.25.

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) — Officials at Clarke University are denying claims by a former head softball coach that she was fired because she rejected efforts by the school to make her appear more feminine. Brendan Quann, an attorney representing the university and two employees, recently submitted a reply to a lawsuit filed by Jaclyn Salzwedel in Dubuque District Court.

The Telegraph Herald reports Quann denied that Salzwedel was fired in May 2012 because she didn’t wear more feminine clothing or because of her sexual orientation. Salzwedel claims in her lawsuit that the school hired a consultant to discuss her appearance and to arrange a new haircut and style at a salon.

Quann says a consultant was hired, but he denies any knowledge about a salon appointment.

The Iowa House has passed a bill that would grant a tax rebate of up to two-million dollars to the Knoxville Raceway. Representative Scott Ourth, a Democrat from Ackworth, lives 25 miles west of the dirt track. “Not only is the sprint car track and the Knoxville Raceway a huge economic development boon to Marion County and the Knoxville area, but it also fills up the hotels in Lucas County, Appanoose County, Warren County and many of the other south central Iowa counties when the races come to town,” Ourth says.

The Knoxville Raceway’s owners would get the same type of tax break that’s been extended to the Iowa Speedway in Newton. The five percent state sales tax that’s charged on goods and services sold at the Knoxville track would revert back to the track’s owners who plan to upgrade the track facilities on the Marion County Fairgrounds. Ourth was the only member of the House to speak about the track when the bill came up for a vote. “It’s a huge economic development boon for an otherwise somewhat depressed economy in southern Iowa,” Ourth said. “I’m very excited about this whole thing and they are doing great things to help grow southern Iowa and bring business into that neck of the woods.”

The bill passed the House on a 78-to-15 vote. It now must pass the Senate before it can go to the governor for his review. Governor Branstad went to Newton earlier this month to sign the bill that provided a similar tax break to the Iowa Speedway.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa has signed junior college point guard Trey Dickerson to a letter of intent. Dickerson, a 6-foot-1 native of Queens, N.Y., will three years of eligibility for the Hawkeyes.

Dickerson averaged 19.8 points, 5.7 assists and 3.5 rebounds last season for Williston State College in North Dakota. He was rated among the nation’s top junior college point guards and should play immediately for coach Fran McCaffery.

Iowa will also bring back starting point guard Mike Gesell, though Gesell often plays shooting guard as well. McCaffery says Dickerson is a quick and creative point guard who can score and excel in transition. Dickerson and freshmen Brady Ellingson and Dominque Uhl will be newcomers for Iowa next season.

The Iowa High School Athletic Association and Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union announced the state qualifying track and field assignments today.   Those state qualifying meets will be held on Thursday, May 15th beginning at 4:00 pm.  Some of the area meets include:
