Chiefs OLB Ford looks good at rookie minicamp

Sports

May 26th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs coach Andy Reid says outside linebacker Dee Ford showed impressive athleticism during the team’s three-day rookie minicamp. Kansas City selected Ford with the 23rd overall pick in this year’s draft. Ford played his college ball at Auburn, where he had 20½ sacks and 27½ tackles for loss in 52 games.

Ford is transitioning from defensive end with the Tigers to outside linebacker with the Chiefs. Reid says Ford has done a great job of learning the defense and his new position. Ford gives Kansas City another pass rusher after the Chiefs had 47 sacks last season, tied for sixth in the NFL. Reid says Ford “brings a lot of energy.”

The rookie minicamp ended on Monday.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have honored Bob Gibson and other members of their 1964 team that beat the New York Yankees in the World Series. There was a ceremony at Busch Stadium on Monday before the Cardinals hosted the Yankees in the opener of an interleague series. More than a dozen members of that championship team were on hand.

Gibson threw the ceremonial first pitch from halfway between the plate and the mound. Longtime catcher Tim McCarver was on the receiving end. Gibson was the winning pitcher in Game 7 of the 1964 World Series. Gibson, outfielder Lou Brock and Red Schoendienst, a coach on that team, are in the Hall of Fame.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs have activated outfielder Justin Ruggiano from the 15-day disabled list and optioned outfielder Ryan Kalish to Triple-A Iowa. The Cubs made the move before opening a three-game series at San Francisco on Monday. Ruggiano was not in the starting lineup.

Ruggiano has been on the disabled list since April 24 with a strained left hamstring. In six rehabilitation games with Iowa, Ruggiano went 3 for 21 with three walks and three runs scored. Ruggiano is batting .229 with a home run and six RBIs in 14 games with the Cubs this season. Kalish is hitting .242 with four RBIs in 39 games.

Iowa trout, walleye fishing improving over time

Ag/Outdoor, Sports

May 26th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Fishing in Iowa has improved significantly over the past three decades thanks to efforts the state and other groups have made. The Des Moines Register reports the improvement is especially noticeable when it comes to the prized game fish of walleye and trout.

Today, 42 streams in Iowa are sustaining trout populations. Thirty years ago only five streams in the state had self-sustaining trout populations. Officials say a variety of efforts by the state Department of Natural Resources, environmental groups and property owners have helped.

For instance, reducing the amount of soil that gets washed into streams and rivers has helped improve the habitat for fish. The improved fishing conditions will likely be popular in Iowa because 46 percent of the state’s residents say they fish.

CINCINNATI (AP) — Adam Wainwright became the National League’s first eight-game winner by dominating Cincinnati again, and the St. Louis Cardinals pulled away to a 4-0 victory Sunday night that completed another successful series against their division rival. The Cardinals are 6-3 against the Reds this season. They’ve won 10 of their last 11 series together.

Overall, St. Louis has won nine of its last 11 games and moved to within 1 1-2 games of first-place Milwaukee in the NL Central. Wainwright (8-2) beat Johnny Cueto and the Reds on opening day in Cincinnati, allowing only three hits during seven innings of a 1-0 victory. On Sunday, the right-hander gave up five hits in eight innings and matched his career high with 12 strikeouts.

Tony Cruz and Kolten Wong each had a pair of singles and drove in a run off Mike Leake (2-4). Wong also stole a pair of bases.

Minor leaguer’s 1st home run caught by dad

Sports

May 26th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

A 22-year-old Houston Astros prospect’s first home run of the season was caught by a familiar fan: his father. Quad Cities first baseman Conrad Gregor launched a go-ahead, three-run shot in the sixth inning of the Class-A River Bandits’ 5-2 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Modern Woodmen Park in Davenport, Iowa, on Saturday night. A fan beyond the fence in right-center field caught the ball and proudly waved his arms. Turns out it was Gregor’s father, Marty.

The Quad City Times reported that Gregor’s parents made the five-hour drive from Carmel, Indiana, to attend the River Bandits’ weekend series. “When I got back to the dugout,” Gregor said, “I heard he made a pretty good catch.”

May 25th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

CHICAGO (AP) — Guess who is back in organized baseball? If you said Manny Ramirez, you would be correct. The Cubs have announced that Ramirez is coming back to baseball as a player-coach for the team’s Triple-A club in Iowa. Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein said in a statement that Ramirez “is not and will not” be on the Cubs’ major league roster, but that he will serve as a mentor to Chicago’s minor-league hitters in Des Moines, Iowa.
