Ventura leads Royals to 3-2 win over Cardinals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Yordano Ventura threw six innings in his return from a sore elbow, and the Kansas City Royals rallied to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2 Thursday night and end a string of eight straight home losses to their in-state rivals. Ventura was skipped his previous time through the rotation because of minor elbow pain, but he looked sharp in his return. He pitched to contact and took advantage of some sharp defense, which helped him to limit the damage whenever he ran into trouble.

The Royals rallied for three runs off Michael Wacha to take the lead in the sixth inning, and Francisley Bueno and Wade Davis each pitched a perfect inning in relief of Ventura.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina drilled Royals leadoff hitter Nori Aoki in the helmet in the first inning Thursday night while trying to throw the ball back to his pitcher. Aoki had just taken a pitch inside and was bent a bit over the plate when Molina wound up and fired the ball back to Cardinals starter Michael Wacha. The ball traveled about two feet before it ricocheted off Aoki’s helmet and toward the third base dugout.

Aoki dropped to the dirt in a heap in the batter’s box and Molina immediately bent over to see whether he was OK. Royals manager Ned Yost and several other personnel also ran out from the dugout to check on Aoki, who eventually stood up and resumed his at-bat. He grounded out moments later.

Chiefs sign Anthony, Rogers, waive Broussard

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Chiefs signed wide receiver Deon Anthony and cornerback Justin Rogers while waiving defensive lineman Risean Broussard on Thursday as they finished the second week of voluntary team workouts.

Anthony is attempting to make the switch from quarterback, which he played in college at Troy last season. He should provide depth during the offseason while Kyle Williams recovers from a knee injury and A.J. Jenkins deals with a balky hamstring.

Rogers is a former seventh-round pick of Buffalo who spent parts of last season with Houston and Miami. He’s appeared in 43 career games, making 64 tackles and three interceptions.

Broussard has missed the recent voluntary workouts because of a knee injury.

Purdue season ticket buyers get photos on helmet

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Some Purdue football fans will be part of the action when the Boilermakers host Iowa on Sept. 27. Students who purchase all-sports season tickets by Tuesday can submit photos of themselves wearing Purdue gear that will be used to form the “Motion P” logo on the team’s helmet for that game. Non-student season ticket holders were previously notified that they can also submit photos. The helmet logo is normally in solid colors.

From a distance, a prototype of the photo logo looks similar to camouflage, but it’s actually a series of tiny photos. Purdue assistant athletic director for marketing and ticketing Chris Peludat tells the Journal & Courier that fans who submit photos will receive a digital copy of the logo used for the game.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Matt Carpenter had a career-high five hits, including the go-ahead double in the 11th inning, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Kansas City Royals 5-2 on Wednesday night to snap a three-game losing streak.

After the Royals rallied with two runs in the ninth, Peter Bourjos worked a one-out walk off Royals reliever Kelvin Herrera in the 11th. Carpenter then rapped his double to center field, drawing a roar from a crowd comprised mostly of Cardinals fans.

Allen Craig added a two-run single off Tim Collins later in the inning, and Pat Neshek breezed through the bottom half to end the Royals’ six-game winning streak against National League clubs. Sam Freeman earned the win with a perfect 10th inning.
