AMES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg has promoted Charlie Henry to assistant coach, replacing Doc Sadler. Henry spent the past two seasons with the Cyclones as a graduate assistant and as the director of player development. Henry fills the void left when Sadler took over as the head coach at Southern Mississippi in April.

Henry previously worked as a graduate manager at Utah and as a video coordinator with the Indiana Pacers. Hoiberg says Henry is among the best young basketball minds he’s ever met.

Sioux City runners get workout, blast of color

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) – More than 2,500 runners in Sioux City got a blast of color as well as a workout from a 5 kilometer race. The Sioux City Journal reports runners who ran in the charity race Sunday morning were blasted with colored cornstarch at a number of spots, leaving their skin and clothing streaked with different shades. The run was a fundraiser for the Boys Club of Sioux City.

Organization board member Jim Palmer says the organization hoped to raise up to $25,000 from the race. Runner Scott Andrew, of Norfolk, Nebraska, didn’t realize he’d be sprayed with colored cornstarch but didn’t mind, saying “I didn’t know what to expect, but it was fun.”

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — University of Iowa defensive back Nico Law is facing a criminal charge and consequences at school for fighting outside an Iowa City restaurant. Law, who will be a senior this fall, was cited for disorderly conduct after the incident at 1:45 a.m. Saturday. Police say the 21-year-old football player assaulted another man after that man argued with a woman who was with Law.

Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz said in a statement that Law will face discipline under the university’s student-athlete code of conduct once the facts are gathered. Law played in all 13 Iowa games last fall and recorded four tackles and one assist. He is from Clinton, Maryland.

Miller pitches 3-hitter, Cardinals beat Blue Jays

Sports

June 7th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

TORONTO (AP) – Shelby Miller took a no-hit bid into the sixth inning and finished with a three-hit shutout as the St. Louis Cardinals beat Toronto 5-0 on Saturday, snapping the Blue Jays’ six-game winning streak. Randal Grichuk hit his first career home run as the Cardinals won for only the third time in 11 game. Miller (7-5) retired the first 13 batters before walking Adam Lind in the fifth.

Jose Reyes lined a single to right field with two outs in the sixth for Toronto’s first hit. Melky Cabrera followed with a ball that nicked first baseman Allen Craig’s glove for a double, but Miller struck out Jose Bautista swinging at a high fastball to end the inning.

Mark Buehrle (10-2) had won six straight decisions. Grichuk’s solo homer was the only run Buehrle allowed in seven innings.
