‘Field of Dreams’ town prepares for anniversary

June 11th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

DYERSVILLE, Iowa (AP) – Local officials are finishing preparations for this weekend’s party celebrating the 25th anniversary of the “Field of Dreams” movie. The Dubuque Telegraph Herald says more than 11,000 people are expected the visit the field near Dyersville in northeast Iowa on Friday and Saturday. There will be several special events, including a cast reunion and question-and-answer session and a celebrity softball game.

Star Kevin Costner is expected to attend, as is Timothy Busfield, who played Costner’s brother-in-law in the film, Dwier Brown, who played Costner’s father, and Brian Frankish, the movie’s executive producer.

The movie was released in 1989, after several scenes were filmed at the rural site near Dyersville.

ISU research looks at accuracy of fitness bands

Sports

June 11th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

Fitness monitors are growing in popularity as people who want to get in better shape seek ways to track their physical activity. Now, researchers at Iowa State University have released a study about the accuracy of those devices. Greg Welk is a professor of kinesiology at ISU. “Most of the monitors are released with little or no evidence of validity. Internally, they may do some checking and make sure that their calorie estimates are okay, but none of that is ever been reported or published,” Welk said.

The ISU study tested eight different activity monitors and found the BodyMedia FIT device was the top performer with a 9.3 percent error rating. “The BodyMedia FIT was the one that performed the best, but the other monitors performed fairly well,” Welk said. The accuracy of the eight monitors, generally worn on the wrist, were tested against a portable metabolic system.

“That’s the true gold standard measure,” Welk said. “We basically computed the energy expenditure estimates from all of the devices using their software and compared to the metabolic (system).” The ISU research is published in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise. This summer, Welk plans to test more activity monitors that recently arrived on the market.

“A lot of these monitors are now very attractive to people because they integrate with their cell phone and allow connection to social media,” Welk said. Most of the devices range in price between $100-$200.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs cornerback Sean Smith was cited for driving under the influence and careless driving after an officer witnessed him lose control and strike a light pole early Monday. According to a copy of the police report, Smith was attempting to make a turn in Kansas City’s Power & Light entertainment district when he struck the light pole around 12:30 a.m. The officer reported that Smith “appeared confused and began mumbling statements that I did not understand.”

Smith declined medical attention. Along with citations for driving under the influence, he was also cited for failure to provide insurance. The Chiefs said in a statement issued to The Associated Press on Tuesday that they were aware of the matter. The statement called the situation “disappointing” but declined further comment.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) – Adam Wainwright became the NL’s first nine-game winner, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat Tampa Bay 1-0 on Tuesday night, the Rays’ third straight shutout loss. The Cardinals have three consecutive shutouts for the first time since April 2013. St. Louis, with 13 shutouts this season, was coming off 5-0 victories over Toronto on Saturday and Sunday.

Trevor Rosenthal got the final four outs, including a base-loaded pop fly by Matt Joyce in the eighth, for his 17th save.

Matt Holliday put the Cardinals up 1-0 with his fourth homer this season, a long drive to left center with two outs in the sixth off tough-luck loser Jake Odorizzi (2-7).

Former Hawkeye basketball player Roy Marble has been charged with domestic abuse assault. 47-year old Roy Marble lives in Cedar Rapids and the woman with whom he lives has accused him of trying to strangle her on Saturday. Marble has posted tweets on Twitter, saying it didn’t happen and asking people not to jump to conclusions. Marble, who grew up in Flint, Michigan, is the all-time leading scorer for the University of Iowa and he was drafted to play in the NBA. Marble was suspended in his rookie season back in 1990 for substance abuse. In 2009 Marble was stopped for speeding near Tipton and police found marijuana in his car.

Marble’s son, Devyn Marble, graduated from the University of Iowa in May and is taking part in pre-NBA draft workouts. Devyn Marble was raised by his mother and grew up in a suburb of Detroit, Michigan.

In addition to his coaching duties, Waldstein will be a Physical Education and Social Studies teacher at the Atlantic High School. His wife, Hillary, was hired as a Level 2 & 3 Special Ed instructor at the high school. Athletic Director Matt Alexander said Eric Waldstein has junior college head coaching experience and is well qualified for the position. He was one of 7 finalists for the job,5 of whom were from within the district.

In a Press Release, Alexander says Eric Waldstein began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Morningside College in Sioux City, and since that time has had the opportunity to coach at several 2 and 4 year colleges including Simpson in Indianola, IA and Cornell College in Mount Vernon, IA. Coach Waldstein has also been either the head or assistant coaches at junior colleges in Illinois and Wisconsin.

Alexander says Coach Waldstein’s experience and background will be a great asset to the Trojan football program. He’s expected to meet with his staff this Friday. Waldstein and his family are making plans to get moved to the community in the near future.  He and his wife have two children, Xander, age 6, and Ryan, age 2.
