Chiefs release Flowers after voluntary workouts

Sports

June 13th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Chiefs released cornerback Brandon Flowers on Friday, shortly after finishing up three weeks of voluntary workouts in which the former starter was conspicuously absent.

Kansas City has been bumping up against the salary cap, so the move to part ways with Flowers was largely expected. He was due to make $5.25 million this season, and the former starter carried a salary cap number of $10.5 million next season.

The decision to release Flowers will save the Chiefs about $7.25 million this season and $7.5 million next season. That money could be used to help the Chiefs sign quarterback Alex Smith and linebacker Justin Houston to contract extensions.

Both of them are in the final year of their contracts.

DYERSVILLE, Iowa (AP) — In Iowa for a “Field of Dreams” 25th anniversary celebration, actor Kevin Costner did the obvious. He played a little baseball Friday, this time with his two young sons. The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports  hundreds of onlookers watched as Costner played catch with his boys, 7-year-old Cayden and 5-year-old Hayes. The movie fans clapped when the boys made a play, prompting Costner to note, “We don’t usually have this many people when we do this.”

Costner and other actors traveled to the field near Dyersville in northeast Iowa to celebrate the 1989 movie about an Iowa farmer who carved a baseball field out of his corn crop. About 11,000 people were expected to join in events at the site Friday and Saturday.

Des Moines lands NBA exhibition

Sports

June 13th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

Harrison Barnes will be returning to the building he won two state championships in high school. The Ames native and his Golden State Warriors will play the Denver Nuggets in an NBA exhibition game October 16th at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Barnes says his first experience with the NBA was an exhibition between the same two teams back in 1993 at Veterans Auditorium. Barnes says he is thrilled with the opportunity to play in his home state.

Arena general manager Chris Connolly says they have been working on this game for several months. It will be the first time Wells Fargo Arena has hosted an NBA exhibition game since it opened in 2005. Connolly says tickets to the general public go on sale next week.

Wainwright returns home for tests

Sports

June 12th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

UNDATED (AP) – Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright returned to St. Louis Wednesday for tests on his sore right elbow, although the team is optimistic the situation isn’t serious.
Wainwright became the NL’s first nine-game winner by pitching seven innings in last night’s 1-0 win at Tampa Bay. Wainwright had elbow ligament replacement surgery four years ago, but Cardinals manager Mike Matheny says the discomfort was on the other side of the elbow.

Iowa DB Nico Law leaves program

Sports

June 11th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Iowa defensive back Nico Law is leaving the program after being arrested and charged with disorderly conduct last weekend in Iowa City. Hawkeyes coach Kirk Ferentz says on Wednesday that Law has decided to transfer.

Law would have been a senior this fall. He competed for the top spot at strong safety with incumbent starter John Lowdermilk during spring practice. Law played in 13 games last season and made five tackles, though his role was likely to expand in 2014.
