Cards’ Wainwright could pitch in All-Star game

Sports

July 14th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

MILWAUKEE (AP) – St. Louis Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright could pitch in Tuesday’s All-Star game despite going seven innings in Saturday’s win over the Milwaukee Brewers. Manager Mike Matheny, who will lead the National League, said the right-hander told him before Sunday’s game against Milwaukee that he felt good and could go at the All-Star game at Target Field.

Wainwright is 12-4 with a 1.83 ERA. Tuesday would be his scheduled day to throw in between starts. Matheny said Wainwright hasn’t done much lobbying to pitch. Matheny is making his first appearance as an All-Star manager. He said he expects his players to compete like their “postseason is on the line.”

SILVIS, Ill. (AP) — Brian Harman won his first PGA Tour title on Sunday, using three straight birdie putts in the final five holes to pull away from veteran Zach Johnson to win the John Deere Classic. Harman had a 5-under 66 in the final round for a 22-under-262 total and a one-stroke victory over Johnson to win $846,000, along with the last exemption for next week’s British Open.

Harman, a 27-year-old Georgian in his third full season on the PGA Tour, withstood Johnson’s challenge by making three birdies beginning at No. 14 to get to 23 under with two holes to play. Johnson, playing four pairs ahead of Harman, birdied the 17th to get within a stroke, but ran out of holes.

Jhonattan Vegas raced into a tie for third with a closing 65, ending up tied with Jerry Kelly at 265. Scott Brown and Tim Clark tied for fifth at 266.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Elian Herrera got five hits while filling in for mourning shortstop Jean Segura, and the Milwaukee Brewers ended a seven-game losing streak by routing the St. Louis Cardinals 11-2 Sunday. The Brewers tied a season high with 19 hits and took a one-game lead over St. Louis in the NL Central at the All-Star break.

Herrera was called up from the minors Saturday when Segura was put on the bereavement list after the death of his 9-month-old son. Segura returned home to the Dominican Republic. Herrera went 5 for 5 with a double and scored three runs.

Wily Peralta (10-6) tossed seven strong innings for the win. A frustrated Carlos Martinez (2-4) allowed four runs in four innings.

Lance Armstrong plans to ride in RAGBRAI again

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Lance Armstrong is again planning to join in on the 418-mile, 15-county bike ride across Iowa later this month. The Des Moines Register reports Armstrong plans to participate in his sixth RAGBRAI and even work as a guest bartender this Saturday in Rock Valley to help raise money for the northwest Iowa town of 3,400 hit by flooding.

Armstrong says he enjoys the Iowa ride because it gives him a chance to participate in cycling in a friendly environment. And he says the organizers of the Iowa event were the first to welcome him after he admitted he doped for all seven of his Tour de France wins from 1999-2005.

Up to 10,000 riders and another 10,000 followers are expected for the July 20-26 ride.

Cards win, Brewers SS Segura out after son’s death

Sports

July 13th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Adam Wainwright pitched seven strong innings and the St. Louis Cardinals sent Milwaukee to its seventh straight loss, 10-2 on Saturday as the Brewers mourned the death of shortstop Jean Segura’s young son. Segura left the team and traveled home to the Dominican Republic, a day after his 9-month-old son died. The Brewers observed a moment of silence for Janniel Segura, and the clubhouse was closed before the game.

The 24-year-old shortstop learned his son had died after the Brewers’ 7-6 loss to St. Louis on Friday night. Manager Ron Roenicke said the boy had been ill. The Cardinals pulled into a first-place tie with Milwaukee in the NL Central. St. Louis trailed by 6 1/2 games on July 1.

Frustrated Brewers star Carlos Gomez struck out swinging in the fifth inning and tried three times without success to break the bat over his leg. He slammed his helmet and tore up his batting gloves.

Hunter-Reay wins IndyCar race in Iowa

Sports

July 13th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — Ryan Hunter-Reay blew past the field with two laps to go and won the IndyCar race at Iowa Speedway on Saturday for his first victory since the Indianapolis 500. It was the fifth straight win in Iowa for Andretti Autosport, and the second in three years for Hunter-Reay.

Hunter-Reay hadn’t led a lap since Indianapolis, and he spent most of Saturday’s race far from contention. But he got new tires on a late pit stop and stormed past Tony Kanaan for his third victory in 2014. Josef Newgarden finished second, followed by Target Chip Ganassi teammates Kanaan and Scott Dixon. Ed Carpenter was fifth.

Helio Castroneves finished eighth, taking sole possession of the series points lead.
